SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step
Soak a 2 x 4mm wooden strip in warm
water to soften it. Remove from the
water and tap with the flat point of a
hammer or similar to indent one side
of the strip. This will cause it to curl.
A fine-grained abrasive sponge can be
very useful. These sponges will adapt to
the shape of the hull.
Hold the strip up against the bow, as
shown on the right, to check the shape,
and adjust if necessary.

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step
Continue aft of the first strip, gluing
another 2 x 4mm strip in line with it.
Once the strip fits properly around the
hull at the bow, apply superglue to the
strip and fix into position.
Glue a third strip aft of the one in the
previous step. When dry, cut the part of
the strip that passes beyond the stern.

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step
When the second row of strips has
dried, glue another three strips below it,
and then cut away the excess.
Repeat Steps D-H to place another
three 2 x 4mm wooden strips directly
underneath the first strips.
The photo shows how the assembly
should look at this stage. Keep any left-
over material, as it will be used later.

Glue another two rows of 2 x 4mm
wooden strip to the side of the hull.
At the bow, the strips should sit at the
angle shown in the inset.
Cut and file the ends of the strips at
the bow so that they are in line with the
front edge.

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step
Cut away the planks that cover the
cut-out at the stern on both side of
the model.
Cut off any excess of the strips at the
stern, and file smooth.
Shape a 2 x 4mm wooden strip in the
same way as on page 282, to fit around
the bow below the first three rows.
Glue into place.

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step
As with the three rows above, glue
a further two rows below the one
completed in the previous step.
Glue two more strips aft of the first and
cut off the excess when dry.
When you trim the excess from the
strips at the stern, make sure that they
match the curve of the planks.

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step
Smooth along the rows to remove any
unevenness between the strips.
The bow of your model should now
look like this. Check that no strips are
blocking the area where the stem will
be placed.

should look at this stage. Keep any left-
over material, as it will be used later.

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step
Assemble the grating pieces as before.
Position a cannon through the first gun
port hole at the bow. Place an offcut
of 2 x 4mm wooden strip next to the
cannon and then place a piece of 5 x
5mm wooden strip on top of it. Hold
the wooden strips in place and mark
a line around the end of the 5 x 5mm
strip. Look at the next step to clarify.

Open the hole up to the edges of the
square with a knife or file.
Remove the wooden strips and the
cannon and make a hole in the centre
of the square marked in the previous
step.
Insert the 5 x 5mm wooden strip into
the hole to check that it fits properly. It
should be parallel to the deck.

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step
Using a file or sanding block, smooth
the bowsprit deck flat.
This is what the strip and hole should
look like from the outside. Repeat this
to create a hole for the cathead on the
other side of the model.
Glue short lengths of spare planks to
the curved side of the latrines received
in Stage 71. When glued in place, cut
off any that extend past the ends.

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step
Glue into place on the bowsprit
deck, aligning the sides with the two
highlighted edges of the holes in the
strip above. Repeat this process to
prepare and fix the second piece to the
other side of the deck.
Glue thin brown wooden strips onto
one of the semi-circular ends. Cut off
the overlapping parts when dry and
then smooth all surfaces with a file or
sandpaper.

should look at this stage. Keep any left-
over material, as it will be used later.

Glue the eyebolts into the holes of
the doors, with the loop positioned
vertically and the rings hanging down,
as shown.
Retrieve two rings and two eyebolts
from previous stages and loop one ring
through each eyebolt.
Place a gun port frame in the first gun
port (arrow), aft of the one with an
open top. With a knife, score a line
along the top of the frame, then remove
the frame, place it into the next gun
port and continue the line. Repeat this
process until you reach the stern.

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step
Cut the strips so that they are in line
with the tops of the gunwales.
Repeat this (Steps E-G) for the other
side of the model.
Glue a row of thin brown wooden strips
along the line scored in the previous
step. Then glue more strips above them
until the sides are covered.
Shape a 2 x 4mm strip to fit around
the bow, positioned 1.5mm below the
lowest gun deck. Glue into place when
you have the correct fit.

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step

line with the horizontal strips below the
transom.
Add another strip in the middle section
of the hull. Then shape another strip
to fit aft of the middle strip and around
the stern.

with only 1mm of the 5 x 5mm strip
remaining, as shown. Repeat for the
second strip.
Cut two 20mm lengths of 2 x 2mm
strips and glue at one end of one of the
50 x 5 x 5mm strips. Then repeat for

Insert the catheads into the holes to
check the fit. Adjust the holes cut on
page 290, if necessary. Do not glue
them into place yet.
Smooth the surface of the catheads
with sandpaper, and then, with the
tip of a file or knife, create grooves
between the two sets of holes, as
shown in the photo.
