SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step
File the bowsprit deck so that no planks
extend over the edge and the surface is
smooth.
To check that the surface of the hull
is evenly smoothed, take a 2 x 5mm
wooden strip, moisten it and shape it
around the area shown. Where it does
not sit perfectly against the surface,
use a file and sandpaper to shape that
area of the hull.

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step
With a spatula, spread a thin layer of
putty over the hull to fill any cracks or
uneven areas. Only apply putty to the
hull below the gun ports.
If any strips aren’t stuck down properly,
apply some superglue to them, hold
in place and then sand when dry to
remove any excess glue.
When the putty is dry, go over the
entire hull with sandpaper or a sanding
block, first with medium grit, then fine.

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step
Smooth the area of the false keel at the
stern until it is reduced to 5mm wide.
Check that the hull is now smooth by
hand. Sand any remaining rough or
uneven areas.
Similarly, smooth the area of the false
keel at the bow to 5mm wide.

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step
Continue gluing the wooden strips
over the planks, and press them down
before they dry to remove any warped
areas. When dry, cut away any part of
the strips that extend past the edges,
then file smooth.
Cut the wooden strips from Stage 60 to
fit over the planks at the stern. Apply
some glue to this area and place two of
the lengths there, as shown.
The photo shows how the assembly
should look at this stage. Keep any left-
over material, as it will be used later.

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step
Engage the two hinge parts of the
gun port door and the hinged frame,
as shown.
Test-fit the gun port frame assembly
into the gun port holes of the lower
three rows to check that they are all
the correct size. Adjust any in which the
frame doesn’t fit.

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step
Glue a 2 x 5mm wooden strip below
the first gun ports, from the fifth port
around to the bow.
Now test-fit the open frame along the
upper gun port holes. As before, adjust
the sizes of the holes if necessary.
When dry, cut the strip in line with the
edge of the false keel (dotted red line).

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step
Glue another strip aft of the previous
one, keeping it in line. When dry, cut
off the area that overlaps the strips that
you fitted previously, on page 244.
Glue another strip aft of the previous
one, in line with the bottom of the
lowest row of gun ports.
Place another strip, as shown, between
the dotted red lines. Smooth along the
strips to flatten any warping that may
have occurred.

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step
Glue another strip to the hull, aft of
the one from Step H. Cut it to be in
line with the brown strips at the stern,
and remove any parts blocking the gun
port holes. Repeat Steps D-J for the
starboard side of the hull.
Glue another strip around the bow,
forward of the one in the previous step.
When dry, cut this strip so that it
doesn’t extend past the false keel, and
cut away any parts of these strips that
block the gun port holes.
The photo shows how the assembly
should look at this stage. Keep any left-
over material, as it will be used later.

Collect all the unused cannon balls
from this stage and previous stages, and
glue them around the border of the
grating shown. Glue seven along each
of the shorter sides and 11 along each
longer side.
Cut a 3 x 2mm wooden strip into two
47mm and two 32mm lengths. Glue the
two 47mm lengths to one of the 32mm
lengths, as shown.

ends of the longer strips.
Place the frame assembled in the
previous step around the cannon balls,
adjust the lengths of the longer strips so
they are in line with the cannon balls,
and then glue into place.
Cut the 3 x 3mm wooden strips into

inner corners of the 15mm lengths until
they are flush with the 56mm length.
Glue a 15mm length halfway over
each end of one of the 56mm lengths.
Repeat for the remaining lengths.
Test-fit the assembled beams in place
in the opening in the main deck, as
shown. It is likely that some, if not all,
will need adjusting.

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step
Place the two stairs from Stage 58 back
into position. Adjust them to fit around
the cannon ball frame, and then glue
them into place.
Once the beams are all correct, paint
them with wood stain.

should look at this stage. Keep any left-
over material, as it will be used later.

mast support and the mainmast hole.
Place one of the mast supports over the
foremast hole. Check that the holes are
aligned, adjust them if necessary, and
glue them into place.
Test-fit one of the railing strips
between the bulwarks at the bow, in
line with the front of the deck. Adjust
the strip to fit if it is too wide, and then
glue it into place.

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step
Cut one of the 1 x 4mm wooden strips
from Stage 61 into two 28mm lengths
and one 19mm length. Glue them
together in the way shown on the right,
and smooth with sandpaper once dry.
Collect four columns from a previous
stage along with a 1 x 4 x 300mm
wooden strip from Stage 61. Glue the
columns into the corners of the small
opening in the deck, as shown.
Test-fit the handrail on top of the
columns from Step F. You may need to
adjust the rail if it extends too far over
the columns in any direction. Glue it
into place once correct.

with wood stain, but leave the railing
strip at the bow bare.

Continue aft of that plank, gluing a

firmly to the hull. Use something hard
and smooth, like a wooden handle, to
achieve this.

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step
Glue another plank above those placed
in Steps B-E, from just aft of the ninth
gun port, as shown.
Cut away the end of the last plank to
match the curve of the hull. Also cut
away any parts of the planks that are
covering the gun ports.
Continue placing strips of planking
towards the stern to complete the row.
Cut away any overlapping parts of the
planks from the stern and the gun ports.

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step
Continue to place planking strips aft
of the one in the previous step. Cut
away the overlapping parts from the
bow and the stern.
Repeat this stage for the starboard side
of the hull.
Glue another plank above the one in
Step G, from the dotted line around
to the bow – this will create a wedge-
shaped gap between the planks.

should look at this stage. Keep any left-
over material, as it will be used later.
