Place the reinforcement onto the side of the rib,
aligning the curved top edges of both.
Now apply glue to the front end of the same rib of
the left wing.
Place the larger reinforcement up against the side
of the rib.
Remove the two parts shown in the photo from
the rib 8 reinforcement fret provided with Stage

Apply glue along the top side of the rib shown in
the photograph.
Remove the two parts shown from the rib 8
reinforcement fret and sand smooth.
Glue the shorter of the two pieces at the front of
the rib, and the longer piece along the back.
Turn the wing over and glue the two pieces to the
same rib.
The left wing should now look like this.
Keep any unused parts to one side.

Build the Spitfire: Step-By-Step
Place the right half of the wing ribs with the
underside facing up. Carefully cut the projections
at the bottom of the ribs with a saw.
It is important to keep the wing stable when
removing the projections.

Build the Spitfire: Step-By-Step
At the wide end of the wing, the wooden strips
placed in the ribs project slightly from the wing.
Use your sanding block to smooth this area to the
same level as the spar and ribs.
5
Fold the sides of the sheet over, fixing them to the
glued side of the block.
4
Take a block of wood and place in the centre of
a sheet of sandpaper. Apply glue to the upward-
facing side of the block (dotted lines).
3
Lightly sand along the top surface of the wing
to remove any unevenness from the ribs,
reinforcements and spars.
6
143
Build the Spitfire: Step-By-Step
Turn the wing over and sand the points where the
projections were removed in Step 1. Once these
are level with the ribs, sand the underside of the
wing as with the top side.
Smooth the wingtip ribs at the ends of
the wing so they are flush with the rest of
the wing.
Sand the fronts of the ribs, following the curve
with the sanding block.

Build the Spitfire: Step-By-Step
Check that the surface of the ribs has been smoothed
properly by placing a wooden strip on each rib and seeing if
it rests perfectly flush. If it doesn’t, then sand the rib more.
Here is how the wing should now look. Keep any unused
parts to one side, for use later on.

Now take the seat base and test-fit it into the hole in the side.
4
Test-fit the seat side with the seat back. Adjust the size of
hole in the side if the fit is tight. Then glue into place.
3
147
Build the Spitfire: Step-By-Step
Test-fit the second side, placing it over the base and the back.
Adjust the holes if necessary and then glue into place. Then
apply glue along the joins between the parts to reinforce.
5
Sand the seat assembly to remove any unevenness from the
surface and to prepare it for painting.
6
148
Build the Spitfire: Step-By-Step
Use putty to fill the holes in the seat sides.
Remove any residue from the seat. Apply some
primer with a brush, spray can or an airbrush
(shown). When dry, sand smooth.
When the putty is dry, remove the excess with a
file or sandpaper.
Now paint the seat with a satin finish black
paint. Apply a couple of coats to ensure an even
coverage.
The seat should now look like this, ready for the
next stage. Keep any unused parts stored for
later use.

To make the first seatbelt, take a brass strip that
came with Stage 41 and polish with a scourer.
Place the strip up against the seat back with one
end in the join between the back and the base.
Position at a slight angle and then bend the strip
at the top of the seat.

Build the Spitfire: Step-By-Step
Place a brass strip on the widest point of the seat
back and fold the corners round. Look at Step 8 to
see where it fits.
5
Following the same process, make another
seatbelt. Smooth the ends of the strips.
4
Cut the strip flush with the back edge of the seat.
3
Cut a piece of 2 x 5mm wooden strip, 8mm in
length and a 6mm length of brass strip. Smooth
the ends of both and then glue the brass in the
centre of the wood.
6

Build the Spitfire: Step-By-Step
Glue the wooden strip onto the shaped brass strip
from Step 5
Paint the brass strips with brown paint, and the
wooden strip with silver paint.
Place all the seatbelt parts onto the seat to check
that they all fit in position.
Glue the three seatbelt parts into place on the
seat, as shown.
This is how the seat should now look. Remember
to keep any unused parts.
