Fitting the bulwarks and bowsprit support
9Glue and nail the bulwarks 34 on top of the
first plates that were fitted in the previous
steps. Glue the bowsprit support 35 to the
bow and between the two bulwarks 34.
10 THE CUTTY SARK: STEP BY STEP
8With the sapele battens 32 cut wedges to fill any gaps. Glue them in and sand the entire hull.

10 Plating the bridgedeck and the stern transom
11 Stem, keel and sternpost
10Glue and nail the walnut battens 36 on
the bridgedeck bulwarks and the battens
37 on the stern transom. To achieve the
correct curvature on the stern transom, the last
battens 37 will need to be cut in ‘wedge’
shapes. Sand down the entire unit.
11Glue and nail the stem 38 and the sternpost 39 so that the
vertical keel is covered. Starting at the bow, glue and nail,
respectively, the bow keel 40, the two central keels 41 and the
stern keel 42. With medium-grain sandpaper, sand down the entire
unit. See the pictures on the next page.

12 Sanding down the hull and simulation of planking on the decks
12With a half round, medium-grain file, file the entire surface of the hull, leaving it smooth and compact. Then, with a fine-grain
sandpaper, finish off by smoothing down the surface. Apply colourless matt finish varnish throughout. See the general advice on how
to apply it. With a pencil, faintly mark the planking 70mm apart. Glue the counter bulwarks 43 inside the bow bulwarks 34.

14 THE CUTTY SARK: STEP BY STEP
13 Painting the bulwarks and fitting the bow deck
13To achieve a better finish, paint the
inside of the bulwarks 34 ivory,
using matt acrylic paint. Fit and glue the
lower edges 44 on the inside of the
bulwarks (on both port and starboard).
Glue the support beam 45 in the notches
of the counter bulwarks 43. Then, fit and
glue the deck in the bow forecastle 46 so
that it rests on top of the ends of the
counter bulwarks and inside the bulwarks.
With the battens 47, plate the deck in the
bow forecastle, sand down the deck and
simulate planking in the same manner as
in the previous step. Glue the interior
strengtheners 48 inside the bulwarks so
that they are level with the upper edge of
the bulwarks.
