14 Stanchions and gunwale covers
15 THE CUTTY SARK: STEP BY STEP
14Drill 52 holes (26 on each side) with a
1.5mm-diameter bit in the waterways
on the sides 30, according to the
measurements indicated in the photograph.
Cut the 52 bulwark stanchions 49 from the
1.5mm-diameter brass wire (each 17mm long)
and glue them into the holes (if you prefer, you
can paint them in dark grey).

15 Trimmings, trimming stanchions and embellishments
15Adjust and glue the straight side trimmings 52 on the lower gunwale covers 50, using the measurements indicated in the photo. Adjust and
glue the curved stern trimmings 53 on the stem waterway of the stern bridgedeck 51, taking particular care to bend the cover to adapt it to
the shape of the stern.
14 Stanchions and gunwale covers, continued 14(Continued) Glue the lower gunwale
covers 50. At the bow, adjust the covers
to the curvature of the hull. To do this, dampen
the battens and apply heat to them with an
iron, or use a plankbender. Glue the stern
bridgedeck waterway 51 onto the deck so that
the join between this and the lower gunwale
covers 50 cannot be seen.

at 14mm. Between all these stanchions and all
around the hull, glue the embellishments 55 on
the inside of the trimmings, all cut 10mm long.

the measurements shown. Then make 19
2mm-diameter holes (all these holes are
to be made both on the port and starboard
sides of the ship). Glue the stem
strengthener 61 on the bow.
17Cut and model the rudder stick 62 according to the measurements shown in the photographs. Join the half
hinges 63 together with nails 26. Those to be fitted on the rudder stick must be adjusted before they are
nailed down 26.

bow and stern, according to the measurements
indicated, make holes to fit the oval-shaped
portholes 64.
18With the battens 65 and 66 mount the two exterior strengtheners on the bulwarks and fit them on the bow, according to the
measurements shown in the photo. Glue them against the bulwarks and at the end of the bracing stem 67.

the hull. Glue the fenders 73 and 74 to the bow, leaving a space of 7mm for the first and approximately 5.5mm for the second fenders, as shown

19At this point, it is time to prepare the
ship for painting. Cover all the small
cracks and faults with wood putty. Once dry,
sand down the entire area with fine-grain
sandpaper until the surface is smooth.
Undercoat the entire hull and decks in varnish.
Cover the entire hull, the decks and rubber
