1. Important information for the installation of the sound module system in the
E39/2
Only for use in the BMW dealer organisation.
The sound module system may only be installed by a specialist workshop that has the required
special tools and manuals (servicing, repair, diagnostics, etc.).
This high quality audio system is to be used exclusively in conjunction with original BMW
car radios.
If it is fitted to other makes, BMW AG cannot accept any guarantee for the sound module
system.
The sound module system is only designed for installation in cars, which do not have an audio
amplifier (for example cars with a hi-fi system or Harman Kardon hi-fi system).
Ensure that the cables/lines are not kinked or damaged as you install them in the car.
Additional cables/leads that you install must be secured with cable ties.
Item numbers refer only to the overview drawings and to the texts next to the appropriate figure.
The customer information is to be given to the customer.

connection plug X13321 and the black 12-pin
connection plug X13598 from the new generation
radio connection plug (30) on the audio wiring
harness (31) and connect them to the new
generation radio connection plug A1 on the
adapter wiring harness A.

connection plug (30).

Affix a rattle guard (4) to a second rattle guard (4)
and then affix them to the wiring harness so that
the plug connector A2+30 is wrapped in them.
Tie back plug connector A2+30.

8. To install the amplier (cars without an on-board monitor radio)

Secure the holder (13) to the amplifier (1) with the
two fillister head self-tapping screws 3.5 x 9.5
(2).Affix the insulation (15) above the edge of the
amplifier to prevent the standard wiring harness
chafing.

Before installing the amplifier (4) connect the radio/
amplifier adapter cable A to the amplifier.
Connect the adapter cable A to the amplifier (1).
Attach branch A4, 25-pin connection plug on the
adapter cable A, to the plug strip (30) and press it
in the direction indicated by the arrow with a large
flat screwdriver (31) until it audibly engages in the
amplifier casing.

Install the amplifier on the A pillar so that the
A pillar trim can be installed again without any
problems.
Check the Bowden cable for the bonnet.
Holes in the body are to be treated with the
anti-corrosion measures set out in BMW
specifications.
Ensure that the insulation strip is on the
standard wiring harness.
Hold the amplifier (1) and holder in position and
mark the mounting points.
Remove the amplifier (1) and drill holes with a
3.5 mm bit at the marked points. Insert the
amplifier (1) and secure it with a Philips screw
4.8x16 (17) in the door and a Philips screw 4.8x30
(12) with a spacer sleeve (16) in the bulkhead.

Screw branch A3, brown cable with earth eyelet
6 mm to the earth post X13016.
Lay branch A5 to terminal 30 post above the
battery.

Lay branch A5, red cable strand on the radio/
amplifier adapter cable, along the standard wiring
harness to terminal 30 post (30) above the battery
(see installation and cabling diagram). Cut off
branch A5, red cable strand, crimp on the contact
(19) and connect it to the fuse holder B1 on the
power supply cable with fuse B.
Screw branch B2, 0.8 mm cable eyelet on the
power supply cable with fuse B to the screw-on
point (31) on the terminal 30 post (30).
Secure the fuse holder B1 to the standard wiring
harness with a cable tie.

Place the cut out drilling template (26) on to the
base holder (21). Mark the holes on the base
holder (21) using a centrepunch.
Drill the four centrepunch points with a diameter of
d = 4.5 mm.

Secure the amplifier (1) to the base holder (21) with
the fillister head self-tapping screws 3.5 x 9.5 (2).
The cable connector on the amplifier must
point to the left.
Clip the cable holder (25) into the base holder (21).
0
First connect the adapter cable A to the amplifier.
Attach the connection plug A4 on the adapter
cable A to the plug strip (30).
Press the connection plug A4 in the direction
indicated by the arrow with a large flat screwdriver
(31) until it audibly engages in the amplifier casing.
Only then may the base holder with the amplifier
be installed.

Push the expanding nuts (24) into the existing
holes. Insert the base holder (21) with the amplifier
(1) and secure it with hexagonal self-tapping
screws (23) and cap nuts (22).
Secure the cables behind the base holder (21) with
a cable holder (25).
Secure the excess length of the adapter cable A
under the amplifier (1) on the base holder (21) with
cable ties (18).

11. To install the front door speakers

As you install the speakers it is essential that
you ensure that the screws tap new threads
since otherwise they will not hold the
speakers securely.
Ensure that the sealing ring is not in contact
with the speaker diaphragm.
If the car has a telephone system the short
branch in the speaker casing is to be used to
connect the new door speaker.
Insulate the other branch and place it in the
speaker casing behind the insulation (white).
Connect the front tweeter (9), insert it into the
existing speaker casing (30) and secure it with
Philips screws.
Then affix the foam ring (11) to the edge of the
speaker.

Do not connect the standard tweeter.
Ensure that the free connection cable is
not bent.
Secure the existing speaker cable to the
door trim with cable ties so that the cable
cannot hang down loose after the door trim
has been installed.
As you connect the new tweeter ensure that
no stripped cable end projects out of the
nsulation-piercing connector.
Connect branch (30), green and green/black cable
to connect the tweeter to the existing speaker
cable (31) using the supplied insulation-piercing
connectors (14) as follows:

Unclip the sealing cap from the cover (30).Secure
the tweeter (6) in the speaker mounting on the
cover (30) in the door trim (3) using the supplied
Philips screws 3.5x7 (3).

12. To install the roof speaker

The figure shows the installation of the
speaker in the roof.
Move the insulation (22) backwards and place it up
to the edge of the tailgate (30) in the speaker
openings between the metal and the headlining
(the arrow (31) points to the front of the car).

Connect the 2-way rear speaker (10) to the
existing speaker cable (30).
The insulation (22) is between the 2-way rear
speaker (10) and the headlining.
Secure the 2-way rear speaker (10) with the
existing screws (31).
Ensure that the speaker cable is not
damaged as you do so.

The affix the foam ring (23) to the edge of the
installed 2-way rear speaker (10) so that it does
not make contact with the speaker diaphragm (30).

Remove the existing seal (30) from the speaker
grille (31).
Cut all the connecting struts between the edges
and the outside edge with an angle cutter.
Remove the inner edge (32) with the struts.

Place the adjusted speaker grille (30) through the
foam ring and place it on the 2-way rear speaker.
Ensure that the grille engages properly at all
points as you do so.

14. Coding and concluding work
Coding
- This system cannot be diagnosed and requires no encoding.
Up to three remote control transmitters (26) can be programmed to operate with one
receiver.
