1. Important information for the installation of the navigation system
Only for use in the BMW dealer organisation.
The navigation system may only be installed by a specialist workshop that has the required
special tools and manuals.
Ensure that the cables/lines are not kinked or damaged as you install them in the car.
Additional cables/lines that you install must be secured with cable ties.
Item numbers refer only to the overview drawings and to the texts next to the appropriate figure.
These installation instructions are only valid for E39/2 LHD cars.
Electrical knowledge is required.
The following are not supplied with the installation kit and must be ordered separately:
- The switch module depends on the equipment and must be ordered separately using the
Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC).
- The switch module must
not
be installed as described in installation instructions 01 29 0
002 825 in section 2.2 (cars with navigation system II).
The installation work
must
be completed as described in section 2.1 (cars with telephone/
mobile phone).
- There are two languages available in the navigation system (German and English).
To set other languages and announcements for the navigation system you will need the
software CD (41).
- The boot trim at the rear left.
These installation instructions are for E39/2 cars:
· without SA 358 (climate comfort windscreen)
- without SA 602 (on-board monitor with TV)
- without SA 609 (navigation system).

8. To install the GPS aerial

Secure the GPS aerial (1) to the GPS aerial holder
(4) using two expanding rivets (3).
0
The mounting points for the GPS aerial
holder (4) are marked in the instrument panel
(50). During the installation process ensure
that you do not miss the mounting points
since otherwise you will damage the
instrument panel (50).
Secure the GPS aerial holder (4) with the fitted
GPS aerial (1) to the instrument panel (50) using
two hexagonal screws (plastic) (2).
To make the installation easier remove the air
nozzle (51) in the instrument panel (50).
Connect branch F1, coaxial plug casing on the
aerial extension for the GPS aerial F to the coaxial
socket casing (52) on the connection cable for the
GPS aerial (1) and secure it to the GPS aerial
holder (4) with a cable tie (10).
Then lay aerial extension for the GPS aerial E with
branch E2 behind the instrument panel (50) under
the carpet along the cardan tunnel to the rear to
the installation site of the navigation computer in
the side section at the rear left and secure it with
textile adhesive tape or cable ties (10).

Connect the fuse holder (38) to branch A2, red
cable, after cutting it.
Insert the fuse (39) into the fuse holder (38).

Cut through branch A4, black/white cable, 400
mm after branch A1, black 12-pin socket casing.

Only required for cars before production date

Branch A4, non-terminated wire end, black/white
cable, (work on the navigation system wiring
harness in advance) using 2-way insulation-
piercing connector (40) to power supply cable (50),
black/white cable, of the black 12-pin plug
connector X322 PIN3 in the boot on the left.

Only required for cars after production date 09/
99 without existing Tacho A cable to X322 PIN 3
Cut off branch E1, black 1-pin socket casing, of
the additional Tacho A signal cable.
Connect branch E1, non-terminated wire end,
black/white cable, using 2-way insulation-piercing
connector (40) to non-terminated wire end A4,
black/white cable.

9. To install the navigation system wiring harness A and additional tacho A signal cable E

Valid for all E39/2 vehicles
Secure branch A8, cable eyelet with a diameter of
6 mm, brown cable, to earth post X19518 under
the left tail light.

Connect branch A6, grey cable, to the connection
plug (50) of the left tail light PIN3, grey/violet cable.

Lay branch A2 and branch A3 on the navigation
system wiring harness A along the standard wiring
harness (50) to the tied back black 2-pin plug
connector X325 above the power distributor in the
boot on the right.
0
Cut off the plug casing from branch A7.
Connect the non-terminated wire end, white/
yellow cable, using insulation-piercing connector
(40) to cable (50) l = 500 mm, white/yellow cable,
5 mm diameter (from the workshop stock) and
connect to the power supply cable (tl. RS), white/
yellow cable, of the standard wiring harness (51) at
the right C pillar using insulation-piercing
connector (40).
