Introduction
1.1.4
1.1.4 Retained Card Bin
The motorized card reader is equipped with an open retained card bin or a locked retained card bin
to store captured cards.
The bins have the following capacities:
Open retained card bin: 50 non-embossed flat cards
Locked retained card bin:
100 non-embossed flat cards for a stripe-down card reader
50 non-embossed flat cards for a stripe-up card reader
The retained card bin holds cards that were not returned to consumers. A card may be retained for the
following reasons:
The network commanded the system to retain the card.
The consumer left their card in the card entry slot too long after the transaction session ended, or af-
ter a Power Failure process ended. (The latter instance only occurs when a Enhanced Return on
Power Failure device is present.)
When the bin is mounted onto the motorized card reader, retained cards enter the bin through the slot on
the face plate.
The locked retained card bin offers added internal security by limiting access to retained cards. To ac-
cess the retained cards inside a locked bin, you must use a service key.
1.2
1.2 Mode of Operation
The following steps describe the basic mode of operation for the motorized card reader.
1. The consumer inserts their card into the entry slot of the card reader.
2. The card is automatically pulled into the reader.
3. The entry slot has a protective shutter, which allows the card to be partially inserted so that the
reader can verify that the card is legitimate.
4. Once the card is verified, the reader opens the shutter and brings the card fully into the system.
5. After security checks, the transaction is enabled.
6. At the end of the transaction and the read/write operation, the card is automatically returned to the
consumer.

3 Preventive Maintenance
3.1
3.1 Cleaning a Card Reader
Use a head cleaning card to clean the motorized card reader.
Under normal circumstances (i.e., indoor use), you should clean the card reader at least every six
months.
If the card reader begins to have frequent read/write errors, use a cleaning card to clean the card
reader.
Refer to AppendixA to order cleaning cards.
1. Place the system in the appropriate mode to service the card reader.
CAUTION
Do not use solvents or any other liquids to clean a card reader. Using anything other than
the recommended cleaning cards (refer to AppendixA) can damage the card reader.
2. To clean the card reader, insert the head cleaning card into the front of the card reader.
3. The card reader will move the cleaning card over the head and try to read the card, thereby clean-
ing the reader. Eventually, the card will be ejected from the card reader. It may be necessary to re-
peat this operation several times to sufficiently clean the card reader.
4. Perform any steps required to return the system to the normal mode of operation.
5. Secure the system after all servicing is complete.
