Continue to plank the deck. Prepare

the planks as you have done before,

and start planking to one side of the

centre line, as shown.

Glue the second half of the deck in

position. It is important that both sides

of the deck dry flush with the ribs and

beams. Hold the halves in place until

the glue has dried.

When you come to the end of the

deck, there will be gaps between

the planks and at the edge of the

deck (arrows). Fill any gaps with

surplus planks.

To simulate the nails, take a pencil and

add two dots on each side of the joins

between the planks.

Plank the other side of the deck. When

dry, remove the excess planks along

the sides and the end, and any planking

covering the mast hole (arrows).

Smooth the surface of the decks lightly

with fine-grit sandpaper.

When the varnish is dry, rub the

surface of the deck with a cloth to

smooth it and to dull down any strong

shine. If you wish, you can repeat this

process of varnishing and cleaning

several times until you achieve your

desired finish.

Use a clean brush to remove the dust

from the deck. Then apply an even

coat of varnish.

over material, as it will be used later.

Prepare three beams to fit on the knees

of ribs 7-9. Apply glue to the knees on

these ribs, as shown in the photo.

Place each beam into position and

hold it firmly in place until the glue

has dried.

Now place the middle section of the

main deck on top of the ribs. Hold it in

place as it dries.

Before installing the middle section of

the main deck, apply glue to the upper

knees of Ribs 4-7.

Start planking the middle section from

the centre and continue out towards

the sides.

To simulate the nails, draw two dots

on each side of the joins between

the planks.

Once you have reached the end of

the deck, cut away any planking that

overlaps the sides or the central hole.

Repeat for the other side of the deck.

Remove the two pieces shown from

the parts sheet from stage 11, and glue

them into the two holes on the aft side

of rib 11.

Glue rib 12 from stage 10 onto the end

of the false keel and the two parts from

Step H, as shown.

Now remove this part from the sheet,

and glue to the underside of the two

parts from the previous step and into

the slot of the false keel.

over material, as it will be used later.

Before putting the aft section of the

main deck in place, apply glue to the

areas highlighted on the right.

Position the first half of the main deck

on the beams and press gently to place.

Begin planking the two halves of the

deck, following the same process as

used before.

Now slide the other half into position.

With both halves angled up, push them

down slowly in the middle until they

snap into place. Apply pressure so that

they adhere properly to the beams.

When you have planked the decks, cut

away any planking overlapping the sides

and any that has covered up the holes

along the centre. Then, using a pencil,

simulate the nails.

Clean the deck with a dry brush to get

rid of any residue from sanding, then

varnish it.

Smooth the main deck with fine

sandpaper, from bow to stern. This

helps to eliminate any unevenness on

the planks and prepare the wood for

varnishing.

Cut the beams for the upper knees of

ribs Nos. 9, 10 and 11, then glue each

of them into position.

Apply glue to the top of rib 9, in the

areas highlighted with dotted red lines.

Test-fit the bulkhead in place, centred

with the hull. If the bulkhead extends

above the beam, sand it level and then

fix in place.

Take the bulkhead from stage 12

and cover it with planks, starting at

the middle and working out towards

the ends. When dry, remove the

overlapping planking from the edges,

then sand and paint in the same way as

the decks.

Remove the false keel reinforcements

from the parts sheet. Sand them to

smooth the surface and remove any

splinters. Then apply glue to one side

of each, as shown in the photo.

Glue one of each of the reinforcements

on either side of the false keel, as

shown, placing them flush with the ribs

in front of them.

Take the deck from stage 13 and mark

a line along the centre of it, as shown.

Test-fit the deck on top of the ribs and

make any adjustments necessary. Glue

it into place.

Remove the remaining piece from the

parts sheet received with stage 11. Sand

the part to smooth it and then glue it in

place at the bottom of rib 12.

Plank the deck, working from the

centre line out to the sides. Plank one

side, and then remove any planking

that extends over the edges or covers

the holes along the centre line. Repeat

for the other side, and when the glue is

dry, mark the nails.

Measure the width of the opening in

the central section of the main deck,

then cut a length of 2 x 4mm wooden

strip to match this length. Glue this

strip in place, with the top edge aligned

with the surface of the deck.

Use a flat file to smooth the edges of

the holes along the deck, as shown in

the photo.

Follow the same process to fit a further

three wooden strips along the other

sides of the central opening of the

main deck.

Cut two lengths of wood to fit on the

front edges of the poop. They should

cover the ends of the two shorter

lengths fitted in the previous step and

project over the edges of the deck by

about 2mm.

Repeat the process used in steps F-H

to fit wooden strips along the three

edges of the poop deck (arrowed). Start

with the single strip across the centre,

add the two shorter lengths afterwards,

and cut them flush with the edge of the

deck when the glue is dry.

Remove the two gun port strips from

the sheet.

Use sandpaper to smooth them and

remove any splinters.

These are the tools you will need when

shaping the hull ribs:

Sanding blocks (short and long)

Half-round files (short and long)

Before placing the two gun port strips

in position, as shown in the photo, you

will need to shape the sides of the ribs.

To create a sanding block, take a block

of wood and wrap sandpaper around it,

securing it in place with tape.

The arrows in the photo highlight

the difference between ribs that have

been shaped (on the right) and those

that haven’t (on the left). Note that the

shaping is only above the steps at the

side of the ribs.

Using the long file, smooth the ribs to

curve from the bow to the centre of

the hull in the areas highlighted in the

photo, above the steps at the side of

the ribs.

To determine if the shaping is correct,

place the strip in the position shown

in the photo and check that it fits flush

with the ribs.

Now shape the edges of the astern ribs,

in the same way as those in Step H.

The middle section of the hull doesn’t

require much shaping, so use the long

sanding block to smooth the outer

surfaces of the ribs.
