Apply glue to the highlighted area of

the false keel.

Ensure that the rib dries at right angles

to the false keel.

Glue on a false keel reinforcement.

As shown in the photograph, its top

edge should be aligned with the upper

edge of the false keel, and the slot

(where Rib 8 will be inserted) should be

aligned with the end of the keel, which

must not obstruct it.

Clamp the false keel reinforcements in

place while the glue dries.

Following the same process as in Steps

D and E, glue the other false keel

reinforcement into place.

Take the bowsprit deck from Stage 3

and mark a line along the centre (red

arrow). Glue short lengths of plank

onto the deck from this line out to the

edges, as shown.

Don’t cover the projections indicated

by the dotted red lines.

Test-fit the bowsprit deck in place.

Make any adjustments necessary to

achieve the correct fit and then glue the

deck in place, as shown.

Once the planks are dry, cut off all the

planking that extends beyond the edges

of the bowsprit deck.

The photo shows how the assembly

should look at this stage. Keep any left-

over material, as it will be used later.

Apply glue to the new section of false

keel, as shown in the photo.

Slide the new section of false keel in

between the false keel reinforcements

from page 23.

Apply glue to the outsides of the false

keel reinforcements, below the slot.

Hold the false keel in place while the

glue dries.

Place Rib 8 in position on the false

keel, as shown.

Following the same process, fit Rib 9 in

place in the next slot of the false keel.

Make sure that the rib dries at a right

angle to the false keel.

Sand the front of Rib 1 above the

bowsprit deck so that it is aligned with

the forecastle deck.

Use a knife to cut away the planks

covering the hole in Rib 1, then use a

half round file to smooth the planks

around the hole, as shown.

Glue short planks to the front of Rib 1,

which you sanded in the previous step.

over material, as it will be used later.

Apply glue to the highlighted areas of

the ribs and false keel.

Carefully place half of the lower deck

onto the ribs and false keel.

Apply glue to the area of the false keel

where Rib 10 will fit.

Now fit the other half in position. Hold

the two halves in place until the glue

has dried.

Place Rib 10 in place in the false keel.

Cut a beam for the lower knees of Rib

6, using the same technique as with

previous beams.

Hold the rib while it dries, ensuring

that it does so at a right angle to

the keel.

Apply glue to the lower knees of Rib 6.

Following the same process as in Steps

G to I, cut and glue beams for the

lower knees of Ribs 7 and 8.

Glue the beam in place on the lower

knees of Rib 6, making sure it doesn’t

protrude past the side of the rib.

over material, as it will be used later.

Apply glue to the areas indicated by the

dotted red lines in the photo.

Slot the first half of the deck into

place and push it down until it rests

in position.

Cut the planks to a length of 65mm,

highlighting the edges with a pencil.

Place three planks to one side of

the centre line of the decks,

intersecting them with the planks of

the connecting deck.

Now slot the other half of the deck

into the ribs, holding both halves in

place as the glue dries.

Apply glue to the area of the deck that

you are going to plank.

In certain areas it will be necessary to

adjust the length of the planks. Mark

them and cut to size before gluing.

Glue planks in place from the centre

line towards the edge of the deck.

Once you have covered the first half

of the deck, cut away the planking

covering the openings and holes in

the centre using a craft knife, as shown

in the photo.

To simulate the nails, take a pencil and

add two dots on each side of the joins

between the planks.

Cover the second half of the deck by

repeating the process shown in previous

steps. Then remove the planking

overlapping the sides and covering the

openings and holes in the centre of

the deck.

Smooth the deck and rib with

sandpaper to remove any splinters.

Apply glue to the false keel and Ribs 9

and 10.

Apply glue to the 11th slot in the

false keel.

Place the lower aft deck into position. It

is important that the deck fits flush with

the ribs and the false keel.

Slide Rib 11 into its slot on the

false keel.

Measure and cut the lower beams

for Rib 9.

Ensure that the rib dries at a right angle

to the false keel.

Apply glue to the lower knees of Rib 9,

as shown in the photo.

Repeat this process to fit a beam on the

lower knees of Rib 10.

Place the beam in position and check

that it does not protrude on either side.
