9Fitting the rubbing strakes
9Fit the 2x3mm-wide rubbing strake 28 along the line where the light basswood and dark sapelle join. Fit the narrower 2x2mm rubbing strake 29
4mm above the first rubbing strake. Do this on both the port and starboard sides. Fit rubbing strakes 28 and 29 on the stern, as shown in the photo,
leaving the sternpost 25 clear. Apply a first coat of matt colourless varnish all over the hull.

10Make and glue the interior ends of the bulwarks 31, 32, 33, 34, 35 and 36 (both on the port and starboard sides) and the end of the bow deck
37 with the sapele 1.5x1.5mm batten. With the sapele 1.5x3mm batten, make the stanchions 38 and fit them 12mm apart, as in the photo. With
a pencil, simulate the planking on the decks, making marks 30mm apart. To frame the central gap, fit the lower, then upper, frames 39, 40, 41, 42.

11With the 1.5x3mm walnut batten, make and glue the central side
gunwale covers 43, the side gunwale covers on the bow 44 and the
side gunwale covers on the stern 45. They should all slightly overhang the
the outside of the hull. The covers 44 and 45 (red arrows) on the bow
and stern will need to be curved, by moistening the end to bend them
and by applying heat with the help of an iron. Alternatively, use a
plankbender. With the 1.5x6mm walnut batten, make the gunwale cover
on the stern 46. With the sapele 1.5x1.5mm batten, make the stanchion
strengtheners 47 (on both the port and starboard sides). With a mixture
of ashphalt and a solvent mix of about 30 per cent, stain the rubbing
strakes 28, 29 and the gunwale covers 43, 44, 45, 46, taking care not to
stain the other parts of the hull.

13Prepare the stern embellishments 51and 52 to the dimensions shown in the photos. Glue embellishments 51 and 52 together, as shown in the
photo, to make the side of the port and starboard. Stain these parts with the mixture of ashphalt and paint all the interior edges in gold (blue
arrows). Cut the rudder tiller 53 and fit it on the blade 48. With the 1.5x6mm sapele batten, make the side walls for the rails 54 on both the port and
starboard, and paint them gold as shown in the photos. Finish off by mounting the side columns 56 on the parts 55 and stain them with the ashphalt mix.

14 Fitting the canopy pillars, stairs and rails
14With the 3x3mm sapele batten, make the two 50mm canopy pillars
57 and the four 40mm canopy pillars 58. Fix the taller pillars to the
hull with nails 17 and glue the shorter pillars on the stern deck. With the
2x3mm sapele batten, make the canopy beams 59, 60, 61 and, on their
ends, just where they support the pillars 57 and 58, make a 1mm-
diameter hole 58 to insert the nails 17. Sand down the mizzenmast hole
63, as shown in the photo. With the 1.5x1.5mm sapele batten, make the
three ladders from the sides 64 and the four steps 65. Once the steps are
glued, make their lashings from cotton thread 62. With the 1.5x3mm
sapele batten, make the 66mm stern rail table 66 and the two 30mm bow
rail tables 67. With the 3x3mm sapele batten, make the 6mm columns 68.
Keep the third ladder and two 30mm stern rail tables for the next set of
instructions.

battens into the slots on the brackets on the bow 162 and on the stern 163. Sand down and varnish the unit. Your stand is now ready to mount
your Sultan Dhow model.
