16 Fitting and placing the loading hatch and bow pillars
16Make the exterior frames 69,70 with the 2x3mm sapele batten and, with the 1.5x1.5mm sapele batten, make the interior frames 71,72 for the
loading hatch. Make the hatchway covers, using 10 1.5x3mm walnut battens, 73. Place an eyebolt 74 with a ring 75 on these covers. With the
3x3 mm sapele batten, make the two bow pillars 76, the beam 77 and fit their lashings 78. Frame the gap on the small central deck with parts 79 and 80.

17Make parts 81,82 and 83 with the 3x3mm sapele
batten to form the two central trapezoid-shaped
hatchways, using the measurements shown in the photo.
With the 1.5x1.5mm walnut batten, make the exterior
ends 84 and 85 and the interiors ends 86,87,88,89,90
and 91 on the central hatchways. With the 1.5x3mm
walnut batten, make the covers 92 on the central
hatchways. Fit the eyebolts 74 with the rings 75 on these
covers. With the same walnut batten, make the two
lengthwise strengtheners 93 and the two transversal
strengtheners 94 on the mainmast bracket. On the upper
end of the bracket, make two 1mm-diameter holes for
the rigging on the main- 95 and mizzenmasts 96. With the
1.5x1.5mm walnut batten, make the three upper frames
97 on the central hatchway and the two lengthwise
strengtheners 98 and the two transversal strengtheners
99 on the mizzen bracket. Paint and varnish six
12mm-diameter barrels 100 and the two 18mm-diameter
basswood barrels 101. With the 2x4mm basswood
batten, make the six brackets 102 for the 12mm-
diameter barrels 100, following the shapes and
measurements indicated in the photo, and fit the
eyebolts 74 in them.

19With the 2x3mm basswood batten, make the parts 104,105,106,107 and 109, and with the 1.5x1.5mm the parts 108 to form the
box. To make it easy to assemble, provisionally place the 1.5x3mm battens to form gaps between the different blocks (yellow
arrows). With the 1.5x3mm sapele batten, make the parts 110,111,112 and 113 to form the chest, according to the measurements
indicated in the photo.

a 150mm piece to make the bowsprit
130. With a medium-grain sandpaper, sand one
of the ends of the bowsprit to make it conical
in shape. From the 3mm-diameter sapele rod,
cut two 15mm pieces to make the bowsprit
supports 132. Sand down both supports on the
upper part, as shown in the photo (broken
white lines) and make a 1mm-diameter hole in
them to insert the 0.8mm-diameter brass
thread reinforcement 133. Place the bowsprit

23 Fitting the masts
23Cut a 165mm piece from the 4mm-diameter sapele rod to make the mizzenmast 141. Cut two pieces from the 5mm-diameter sapele rod, one
measuring 245mm to make the mainmast 143 and another measuring 28mm to make the auxiliary mast on the mainmast 146. With a medium-
grain sandpaper, sand down one of the ends of the masts 141, 143 to give them a conical shape. With the 2x5mm basswood batten, make the two wide
lugs on the mizzen 142 and the two wide lugs on the mainmast 144 according to the measurements and the shape indicated in the photos. With the
1x4mm basswood batten, cut two 20mm pieces to make the narrow lugs 145 according to the measurements on the mainmast 143. Place all the lugs in
the upper part of the masts and fit the cleats 135. In these masts, make the 1mm-diameter holes (see photos). Fit the masts 141, 143 and 146 in their
respective holes and at the appropriate angle to the deck. Between the masts 143 and 146 make the lashings 147. Continued on next page

24With the help of the fine raw thread
103, fit the stern canopy 148, making a
1mm-diameter hole in each of the ends of the
curved transversal strengtheners 136, 137 and
138 and roll the canopy, as shown in the
photographs. Cut a 210mm piece from the
4mm-diameter sapele rod to make the yard on
the mizzen 149. Sand down both ends, giving
them a conical shape and sew the mizzen
lateen sail 150 to the yard 149 with the thread
103. In the centre of the yard, make two 1mm-
diameter holes to secure it to the mizzenmast
141 with the brown 0.15mm-diameter thread
151 and the trucks 152. With the raw thread
103, rig the mizzen halyard (green arrows) and
the mizzen sheets (blue arrows), tying them all

25 Rigging the mizzen lateen sail
25With the fine raw thread 103, rig the mizzen
sheets (blue arrows) and the mizzen guys (red
arrows), all of which are to be tied into their respective
cleats 135. With the fine brown thread 151, make the
lashings on the mizzen lateen sail on both sides,
according to the measurements indicated in the
photograph. Tie a piece of brown thread 151 to the
block and tackle 153, and on the other end tie it to the
mizzenmast 141 (yellow arrows). With the raw thread
103, make the mizzen rigging (pink arrows), starting
with the block and tackle 153, then passing the thread
103 through the bracket 96 and the block and tackle
153, tying off in the cleat 135 located on the
mizzenmast. To make the side rigging (green arrows),
tie some pieces of brown thread 151 to the block and
tackle 153, and on the other end, tie them to the
mizzenmast 141 (yellow arrows). Start with the block
and tackle 153, then pass the threads 103 through the
other block and tackle 153 tied to the short pillars 58,
and tying off in the cleats 135 on the stern deck.

26 Lateen yard and main lateen sail
26Cut a 245mm piece from the 5mm-diameter sapele rod to
form the lower end of the lateen yard 154 on the mainmast.
Sand down one of its ends to give it a conical shape and sand down
the other end into a wedge shape (broken yellow lines) to join it to
the next rod. Cut a 125mm piece from the 4mm-diameter sapele
rod to form the second part of the yard 155. Sand down its two
ends to a wedge shape (broken yellow lines). Cut a 60mm piece
from the 3mm-diameter sapele rod to form the top of the yard 156
and sand down its ends in the same way as for the rod 154. Join the
three rods together, using the measurements shown in the photo,
and lash them together 157. Glue the truss 158 onto the lower end
of the yard 154 and make the truss lashings 159 and the two 1mm-
diameter holes. Sew the mainmast lateen sail 160 to the lateen yards
154, 155 and 156. Place two lengths of 0.15mm-diameter brown
thread 151 next to the trucks 152. Push each thread with its
corresponding truck through each 1mm-diameter hole in the lower
end of the lateen yard 154.

27Tie the unit comprising the lateen yard, the truss and the lateen
sail on the mainmast 143, using the fine brown thread 151 and the
trucks 152. With the fine raw thread 103, rig the halyard on the mainmast
(green arrows), starting the rigging with the truss 158 and going through
the hole on the upper end of the mainmast, ending in the cleat 135
located in the lower part of the mast. With the brown thread 151,
make the lashings on the lateen sail of the mainmast, according to the
measurements shown in the photo. Tie a piece of brown thread 151 to
the block and tackle 153 and, on the other end, tie it to the mainmast 143
(yellow arrow). With the raw thread 103, make the rigging on the
mainmast (pink arrows) starting with the block and tackle 153 and passing
the thread through the bracket 95 and again the block and tackle 153 and
ending in the cleat 135. Tie two pieces of brown thread 151 to two
blocks 161 and on their other ends, tie them to the lower end of the yard
154 (black arrows). With the raw thread 103, rig the mainmast sheets
(red arrows) starting with the cleats 135 and going through the blocks 161
and ending in the same cleats 135. Rig the sheet in the lower corner of the
stern of the lateen sail 160 and end in the columns 68 (white arrows).
With this same thread 103, rig the bulwark (blue arrows), starting from
the lower corner of the bow of the lateen sail 160 and going through the
block 161 fitted in the bowsprit 130 and end in the bow beam 77.

28Tie some lengths of fine brown thread 151 to blocks 161, and on
their other ends tie them to the top rod of the lateen yard 155 (green
arrows). With the raw fine thread 103, fit the rigging (blue arrows), starting
with the eyebolt 74 that has been fitted in the long pillar 57 and passing the
thread through the block 161 to end in the same eyebolt 74. To rig the bow
stay (red arrows), tie a length of fine brown thread 151 to the block 153 and,
on the other end, tie it to the mainmast 143 (yellow arrow). With fine brown
thread 151, fit another block 153 to the eyebolt 74 (white arrow). Pass raw
fine thread 103 through both blocks. Fit the rigging to the lateen sail (pink
arrows), using a block and the eyebolts on the bow rail table 67. To rig the
mainmast 143 (violet arrows), tie some lengths of fine brown thread 151 to
the blocks 153 and, on the other ends, tie them to the mainmast 143 (orange
arrows). With raw fine thread 103, make the rigging, having first fitted the
four eyebolts 74 and the blocks 153 in the gunwale covers 43. We
