Cut out the shape drawn in the
previous step. Keep the sheet to one
side for later use.
Place the lantern frame on the
lantern backing and draw around it with
a pencil.
Carefully bend the lantern frame
along the perforated lines with pliers
until the two sides meet.

Wrap the lantern backing into a cone
shape and insert into the frame.
Place the bottom of the lantern frame
over the lantern base.
Place the lantern top onto the top of
the frame. You may have to adjust the
height of the backing for it to fit.

Remove chocks A and B from the fret.
Smooth both pieces with sandpaper.
Glue a further six dummy cannons to
the points shown in the photo.
Stain chocks A and B with the same
wood stain used elsewhere on the
model. Then glue them on top of the
beams, as shown.

Apply glue to the top edges of the
chocks, and then place the assembled
boat from Stage 47 in them, as shown.
Ensure that it is facing in the same
direction as the ship.
Prepare four 4mm double blocks by
tying a length of 0.5mm natural thread
around them. Then tie them around
the beams, on either side of the chocks.
Paint the handles of the oars from
Stage 120 with black paint, and the
blades with brown paint.

Glue the oars into the boat, with the
blades towards the stern.
Take the boat from Stage 120 and
finish it in the way shown on pages
184-186.

frames from the sheet received with
Stage 126. Smooth the edges with a file.
Trace around the lantern frames on the
lantern backing sheet, then cut the two
pieces out.

Glue the two frames into the two bases.
Carefully bend the frames along the
perforated lines until the ends meet.
Roll the backing pieces up and place
them into the lanterns. Test-fit the tops
onto the lanterns and trim the backing,
if necessary, so that they fit. Then glue
the tops into place.

Wipe the surface of the 1.5 x 100mm
brass wire to clean it.
You should now have three completed
lanterns, as shown in the photo.
Cut the wire into three equal lengths.

Shape a 2 x 4mm or 2 x 5mm wooden
strip to fit at the edge of the stern
gallery, as shown. Once it is shaped, cut
it to size and glue it into place.
Repeat for the other side of the stern
gallery. File the tops of the strips flush
with the top of the gallery.

Shape another wooden strip, this time
over the top of the gallery, and glue it in
place. It should extend over the strips
from Steps A and B.
This is how the strips should look.
Smooth the edges and corners with
sandpaper.
Cut away the excess of the strips and
shape the ends with a file, so that they
look like the one shown in Step F.

Drill three 1.5mm holes in the middle
of the strip on the top of the gallery, at
30mm intervals, as shown.
Smooth the edges of the three
wooden strips with sandpaper,
then stain the strips.
Cut the lengths of brass wire at the
bottom of the lanterns to 8mm long for
the two smaller lanterns and 10mm for
the larger lantern.

hole of the three holes drilled in Step

Paint the handles of the oars black and
the blades brown.
Remove the remaining chocks (C

Glue the two oars into place in
the boat, as shown, on either side of
the chocks.
Stain the chocks.
Apply glue to the chocks in the larger
boat, and then place the smaller boat
from Stage 127 onto them.

Place one of the lengths of thread over
the front of the smaller boat, with the
blocks hanging at equal distances either
side, aligned vertically with the blocks
tied around the beams.
Cut two 100mm lengths of 0.5mm
brown thread and tie a double block at
either end.
Place the second length over the boats
in the same way, aligned with the blocks
at the stern.

Pass the thread back up and through
the second hole of the first block, then
back down and through the second
hole of the beam block. Pass the thread
back up and tie it above the first block.
Apply a small amount of glue to the
knot to secure it in position. Repeat this
for the three other sets of blocks.
Cut a 130mm length of 0.15mm natural
thread and tie a knot at one end. Insert
the other end into the upper block,
then pass it down and through the
double block tied to the beam.
