1 Introduction
TheMETTLERTOLEDOTypeHA405-DPA-SCcombinationpH
electrodeisa low-maintenance,pre-pressurizedelectrode
withagel-typereference.IthasaspeciallyformulatedHA
(highalkalinity)pHmembranetominimizesodiumerrorin
extremelyalkalinemedia.Thereferenceelementincorporates
asilver-iontraptopreventsilversuldecontaminationofthe
referencejunction.Thegel-typereferenceisalsoavailablein
acombinationORPandasaseparatereferenceelectrode.

2 Preparation
Afterunpacking,examinetheelectrodeforanymechanical
damage.
METTLERTOLEDO electrodes are factory tested and are
shippedready-to-use.Tomaintainfactorypressurization,
theType HA405-DPA-SCelectrodes haveasiliconeseal
coveringtheceramicdiaphragm;thismustberemovedwith
theenclosedbladepriortouse.Removethehydrationcap
andremoveanyelectrolytecrystalsbyrinsingtheelectrode
withdistilledwater.Patdry;donotrubasthismaybuildup
astaticchargeandlengthentheresponsetime.
Eliminateanyairbubblesaroundtheinternalelementinthe
pH-sensitivemembrane.
3 Operation
METTLERTOLEDOpHelectrodescanbeusedwithmostpH/
mVmeters.Followmanufacturer’sinstructionsforuse.
Atwo-pointcalibrationisrecommended,usingfreshbuffers
ofknownpHvalueswhichbracketthesamplepH;onebuffer
shouldbeclosetopH7tosetthezeropoint.Forfastroutine
analysis,astandardizationusingonebufferatavaluenear
thesamplepHcanbedone.
4 Maintenance
When properly cared for, METTLER TOLEDO electrodes
shouldprovideaccurateresultsoverthousandsofuses.
Storage:Electrodesshouldberinsedthoroughlyafteruse
andstoredin3MKClorpH4buffersolutionwithaddedKCl.
DONOTstoretheelectrodedryorindistilledortapwater;
thisdehydratesthepHmembraneandtheelectrodemust
berehydratedbeforeusebyimmersingforseveralhoursin
3MKCl.
Relling:TypeHA405-DPA-SCgel-referenceelectrodesare
notrellable.
Protein Contamination:CleantheelectrodewithpHElectro-
deCleanerforProteinsfollowinginstructionsonthebottle.
Reactivating pH membrane:UseReactivatingSolutionfollo-
wingdirectionsCAREFULLY.
Servicing a clogged or dry reference junction:Immersethe
electrodeinabeakerof3MKCl.Heatthesolutiontoappro-
ximately70°C(160°F)andallowelectrodetosoakinthis
solutionasitcoolstoroomtemperature.
