1 Introduction
The METTLER TOLEDO Type 405-DPAS-SC combination
pH electrode is a low-maintenance, pre-pressurized,
autoclavable electrode with a gel-type reference. The
reference element incorporates a silver-ion trap to prevent
silversuldecontaminationof the reference junction. The
gel-typereferenceisalsoavailableinacombinationORP
and as a separate reference electrode
2 Preparation
Afterunpacking,examinetheelectrodeforanymechanical
damage.
METTLER TOLEDO electrodes are factory tested and are
shippedready-to-use.(Tomaintainfactorypressurization,
the Type 405-DPAS-SC electrodes have a silicone seal
coveringtheceramicdiaphragm;thismustberemovedwith
theenclosedbladepriortouse.)Removethehydrationcap
andremoveanyelectrolytecrystalsbyrinsingtheelectrode
withdistilledwater.Patdry;donotrubasthismaybuildup
astaticchargeandlengthentheresponsetime.
Eliminateanyairbubblesaroundtheinternalelementinthe
pH-sensitivemembrane.
3 Operation
METTLERTOLEDOpHelectrodescanbeusedwithmostpH/
mVmeters.
Followmanufacturer’sinstructionsforuse.
Atwo-pointcalibrationisrecommended,usingfreshbuffers
ofknownpHvalueswhichbracketthesamplepH;onebuffer
shouldbeclosetopH7tosetthezeropoint.Forfastroutine
analysis,astandardizationusingonebufferatavaluenear
thesamplepHcanbedone.
4 Sterilization
Type 405-DPAS-SC electrodes are steam-sterilizable in-
situandautoclavable.Followoperatinginstructionsforthe
autoclave. It is advisable(but notnecessary) toput the
closurecap(p/n002011096)ontheconnectorpriorto
autoclaving.
Repeatedsterilizationmaycausetheelectrolytetodiscolor
slightlyduetotheelevatedtemperatures.Thisdoesnotaffect
theelectrodeperformance.
5 Maintenance
When properly cared for, METTLER TOLEDO electrodes
shouldprovideaccurateresultsoverthousandsofuses.
Storage:Electrodesshouldberinsedthoroughlyafteruse
andstoredin3MKClorpH4buffersolutionwithaddedKCl.
DONOTstoretheelectrodedryorindistilledortapwater;
thisdehydratesthepHmembraneandtheelectrodemust
berehydratedbeforeusebyimmersingforseveralhoursin
3MKCl.
Relling:Type405-DPAS-SCgel-reference electrodes are
notrellable.

inthissolutionasitcoolstoroomtemperature.
