General instructions
1. Introduction
Thesegeneralinstructionsmustbereadilyavailabletoopera-
torsoftheelectrodeatalltimes.Beforeusingtheelectrode,
theseinstructionsmustbereadandunderstoodbyalloperat-
ingpersonnel.

electrode
versions
InPro
®
4501VPand
InPro4501xedcablearelow-maintenance,temperature-com-
pensatedpHcombinationelectrodescontainingpolymerelec-
trolyte (Xerolyt
®
Plus), and are hereafter referred to as the
InPro4501 family. An integrated temperaturesensor (RTD)
provides automatic compensation of the electrode slope to
ensureaccuratereadings.

2. Safety remarks
TheInPro4501familyofelectrodesisintendedsolelyforthe

ofglass.Iftheyaretobecleanedorcalibratedusingacidor
alkaline solutions, protective clothing (goggles and gloves)
mustbeworn.Inaddition,localandin-house-safetyregula-
tionsmustbeobserved.

4. Installation and preparation for use
1.Onunpacking,andagainpriortoinstallation,checktheelec-
trodevisuallyforsignsofmechanicaldamagetotheglass
membrane,theshaftandtheconnector.Reportanyfaultsor
defectsimmediatelytoyour authorizedMETTLERTOLEDO
dealer.
2.Removethewateringcapandrinsetheelectrodewithdis-
tilled orde-ionized water.Useonlysofttissuetodab the
electrodedry.Donotrubtheglassmembranesincethiscan
leadtosluggishresponsebehavioroftheelectrode.
3.Electrodeswithadryglassmembranemustbeconditioned
forseveralhoursina3molKClsolutionbeforebeingused.
4.Connectalwaysthesolutionground(bluecable)tothetrans-
mitter.
5.UsePTFEtapetosealtheNPTthread.
6.Ifpossibleusetheprotectionsleeve(orderno.52401808).
5. Cabling
TheInPro4501VPisequippedwithaVarioPinconnector.To
connect thecableto theelectrode,attach and gently rotate
untiltheconnectorisengaged(groove).Screwthecablecap
nutontotheelectrodeuntiltheconnectionissecure.Theplug
assemblyshouldbettedhand-tightonly;notoolsshouldbe
used.Fordetailsoftheexactassignmentoftheindividualcable
leads to the VP pins, please refer to the instruction leaet
“Preparationofthecableforconnectiontothetransmitter”sup-
pliedtogetherwiththecable.

6. Calibration and measurement
InPro4501VPelectrodesrequiretwo-pointcalibration.Before
calibration,thewateringcapmustberemovedfromthepH
electrode.Theelectrodeisthendippedsuccessivelyintotwo
differentbuffersolutions,eachof knownpHvalue,and the
transmittercalibratedtothesebuffervalues(forexample,buf-
ferspH4.01andpH7.00).Pleasenotetheinstructionsgiven
intheoperatingmanualofthetransmitter.Calibrationshould
berepeatedasandwhenneeded.

7. Maintenance
– ElectrodeswithXerolytPluspolymerelectrolytecannotbe
relled.
– Electrodesshouldnotbestoreddryforanyperiodoftime
– Duringstorage,thewateringcapshouldbeinplace,lled
withFriscolyt
®
or3molKClsolution.
– Neverstoreanelectrodeindistilledordeionizedwater,as
thisshortensthelifetimeoftheelectrode.
– Should the electrode dry out, it must be conditioned for
24hoursinFriscolyt(orderingno.512340053for250mL,
or51340054for6x250mL)beforereuse.Aftercondition-
ing,recalibrationisrequired.
– After each workcycle, the tip of the electrode should be
cleanedusingde-ionizedwater.

8. Diagnostics
Theelectrodesareequippedwithagroundingringwhichal-
lowsadiagnosticofthediaphragmcondition.Ifthisdiaphragm
(openjunction)shouldbecomecloggedorifthereferencere-
sistance exceeds a certain value (see transmitteroperation
manual),itisthennecessarytoreplacetheelectrode.Elec-
trodesoftheInPro4501familyshouldasageneralrulenotbe
cleanedwithacidiccleaningsolutions,e.g.diaphragmclean-
ingsolution,reactivationsolution,etc.However,byextremely
carefulapplication,itispossibletoreactivatetheglassmem-
brane,see«point9»below.
9. Troubleshooting(sluggishresponsetime,insuf-
cientsensitivity,etc.)
ATTENTION: The glass membrane must be very cautiously
dabbedwithHFsolutionusinganebrushandtakingcarethat
solutiondoesnotcomeintocontactwiththetitaniumpin(me-
tallic solution ground). Also check the electrode connector
(onlyVPversion)forpossibletracesofmoisture.Ifnecessary,
cleanwellusingdeionizedwateroralcohol,andafterwards
drycarefully.
10. Disposal
DisposeofInPro4501familyelectrodesinaccordancewith
localorstateregulations.
11. Guarantee
METTLERTOLEDOgrants12monthswarrantycoveringmanu-
facturingdefects,validfromthedateofproductionoftheelec-
trode.
