GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR SMOKE CONTROL DUCT INSTALLATION

SMOKE CONTROL DUCT ESAD

ESAD is a CE-marked smoke control duct system for single compart-

ment applications. The ESAD duct is ﬁre tested together with ﬁxtures

and ﬁttings. Smoke control ducts and ﬁttings meet classiﬁcation

E 120 S and pressure class 1500 Pa.

TIGHTNESS OF THE DUCT WORK

Tightness of smoke control ductwork is very important. Please follow

this installation instructions to fulﬁlls the requirements of your desired

ﬁre class.

Please note, that each joint has to be sealed additionally with alumi-

num/duct tape, which guarantees tightness in high temperatures (600

°C). Veloduct sealing system together with aluminum/duct tape seals

all joints for both normal ambient temperature conditions and ﬁre situ-

ations.

DUCT HANGERS

ESAD smoke control drop rods are ﬁre tested. Instructions for distance

between drop rods and ductwork must be adhered to.

FLEXIBLE JOINT EFLE

Ductwork will expand in higher temperatures. Flexible EFLE joints

should be used to stop these movements. The Product Code is EFLE-

aaa-1 with sizes 010-100 cm available.

VELODUCT DUCT FITTINGS AND OTHER COMPONENTS

Please note, that it is only allowed to use duct ﬁttings and components

(IRIS dampers) which are ﬁre tested and CE-marked according to prod-

uct standard EN 12101-7.

CE-MARKING IS MANDATORY FOR SMOKE CONTROL

PRODUCTS

Smoke control ducts, ﬁttings and other duct components which are

used for smoke exhaust purposes, are in scope of the harmonised

product standard EN 12101-7 and have to be CE-marked. Please check

before starting installation work, that all components are CE-marked.

The markings prove to the building owner that they meet product stand-

ards for smoke control purposes for single compartment applications.

INSTALLATION

1. Select a suitable section of ducting and check that the duct can be

installed in accordance with the drawing below, before collecting the

necessary components from the storage area.

2. Collect the necessary ﬁttings and ducts. Check that all parts are CE-

marked and they are not damaged in anyway that may cause air leak-

ages once installed.

3. Cut the ducts in straight lines to the desired length. Make sure you

deburr the duct ends thoroughly, using a deburring tool.

Locate the screws/pop rivets at a distance from the duct end, so the

rubber seal will not be damaged or peirced. Check the maximum dis-

tance for K from table 2 below.

5. Finally tape all joints carefully with aluminium/duct tape, which has

thickness at the minimum 30 μm and the width at the minimum of 50

mm. Lock the end of aluminium taping with screws or pop rivets.

4. Assemble suitable sections on the ﬂoor. To connect one part into an-

other, turn part while pushing it in and then lock the joints.

All joints must be secured by means of pressure proof steel pop riv-

ets or screws (min Ø 4,2 mm). The number of screws / pop rivets are

speciﬁed in table 1.

6. Drop rods should not exceed the maximum distances according to

table 3. Drop rod strength class should be 8.8 and diameter according

to table 3.

Speciﬁed dimensions of duct clamp fasteners have to be used for sus-

pending the duct sections. Duct clamp fasteners have to be made from

galvanised steel, minimum thickness of

1,5 mm and a width of 25 mm. Example

type ‘BDSK’ or ‘Müpro’ duct clamp fas-

tener with or without vibration control.

Suspending solution for the ESAD duct sections is based on results of

ofﬁcial ﬁre tests according to product standard EN 12101-7 for single

compartment applications.

Fire class for ESAD and ﬁttings and other components is E 120 S. Fire

test temperature is 600 °C.

Duct clamp fasteners with drop rods should be placed always close to

joints, if possible.

8. Note the use of ﬂexible connection pieces (EFLE) where vertical and

horizontal ducts meet. The EFLE is fastened so that the collars are ap-

prox. 10 mm from the edges and the ends of the ducts inside the con-

nection piece are approx. 70 mm apart. The maximum installation dis-

tance for ﬂexible connection pieces is 10 m.

9. Whenever the installation work is temporarily stopped, all open duct

ends must be sealed against the ingress of dust. The ductwork must

not be used for any temporary purposes during construction, or it must

be cleaned before it is put into actual use. The inside of the ductwork

must be checked for impurities when the installation work is ﬁnished,

and any impurities must be removed.

7. Vertical ducts must be supported on both sides by supports made of

galvanised L or U proﬁle 2x30x30 (height 800 mm). The support spac-

ing must not exceed 2.5 m. The supports must be secured at angles

and to the wall using M8 bolts, and to the duct, using a minimum of six

DIMENSIONS, INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE

INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE

After installation, when the system is running, it is recommended ac-

cording to product standard EN 12101-7 that the following inspection

procedure is carried out and recorded. These inspections should be un-

dertaken at least once a year. See example of inspection record below.

Ducts, clamp fasteners, drop rods and ﬁttings are constructed of galva-

nised steel material for longer operating life.

Inspections of sealings have to be made at least once per year. Special

notice should be taken to inspect the condition of aluminium/duct tap-

ing, which guarantees the tightness in higher temperatures. If any fail-

ure is detected, maintenance work has to be done immediately.

NOTE: A smoke control duct section is inherently part of a smoke control

system. As this is the case the whole system should be checked as go-

verned by the operation and maintenance requirements for the system.
