1 Introduction
TheMETTLERTOLEDOpHelectrodetypeInPro
®
3030
isalow-maintenance,autoclavableandpressure-re-
sistantmeasuringelectrodewithagel-typereference
electrolyte. The reference element incorporates a
silver-iontraptopreventsilversuldeprecipitationon
thediaphragm.Pleasereadtheseinstructionscareful-
lybeforeputtingtheelectrodeintooperation,inorder
to ensure faultless operation.
TheInPro3030electrodeismainlydesignedforthe
measurementofpHvalueinbiotechnicalprocesses
atmoderatepressures(<6bar).Itcanbeusedunder
industrial fermentation, pilot and laboratory condi-
tions,andisparticularlyintendedforthoseprocesses
whereintermediatesterilizationorautoclavingisin-
dispensable.
2 Safety instructions
Theelectrodeisintendedonlyfortheusedescribedin
Chapter1.Theelectrodeconsistspartlyofglass.Ifan
electrode is to be cleaned or calibrated using acid or
alkalinesolutions,safetygogglesandglovesshould
beworn.
3 Product description

Additionally, the electrode is supplied with a serial
numberontheconnectorcapforidenticationpossi-
bilitiesforeachelectrodeproduced.
4 Installation and commissioning
1. Onunpacking,checktheelectrodeformechani-
caldamageofthepHsensitiveglassandshaft.
ReportanydamageimmediatelytoyourMETTLER
TOLEDOsupplier.
2. Removethewateringcapandbrieyrinsetheelec-
trodewithde-ionizedwater.Afterrinsing,theelec-
trodeshouldonlybedabbeddrywithatissue.Do
notrubthepH-sensitiveglass,sincethiscanlead
to electrostaticcharging and sluggish response
times.

3. CheckthespacebehindthepH-sensitiveglassfor
airbubblesandremoveanyairbubblesbyshak-
ingtheelectrodeslightlyinaverticaldirection.
4. Placetheelectrodeintothehousingasdescribed
intheinstructionsforthehousing.
5. ConnecttheelectrodeandthepHtransmitterwith
thecorrespondingcable(AK9forInPro3030).Ob-
servetheconnectionsschemethataccompanies
thecableorthetransmitter.
5 Operation
5.1 Calibration of the electrode and pH transmitter
FortheInPro3030electrodea2-pointpH-calibration
isrecommended.Beforecalibration,rstremovethe
wateringcap.Tospeeduptheresponsetimeofthe
electrode after long transport and storage periods,
andbeforecalibration,diptheelectrodeintobufferpH
7,bufferpH4andbufferpH7again,eachtimefor
aboutoneminute.Theelectrodeisthendippedsuc-
cessivelyintotwodifferentbuffersolutionswithgiven
pHreferencevaluesandthetransmittercalibratedto
thesebuffervalues.NormallyyoustartwithbufferpH
7fordeterminingthe0-pointandthenbufferpH4or
9fordeterminingtheslope.Inthecaseofmicropro-
cessor-basedtransmitterswithbufferrecognition,the
orderofthetwochosenbuffersolutionsisirrelevant.
Wheneverpossible,atemperaturesensorshouldbe
connectedtothetransmitterand«automatictempera-
turemeasurement»selectedthere.
Pleaserefertotheinstructionmanualofthetransmit-
terforfurtherdetails.
5.2 Sterilization of the electrode
The InPro 3030 electrode can be sterilized either
through autoclaving or through in-situ sterilization
with steam or superheated fermentation medium.
Sterilization temperatures above 140 °C are not al-
lowed,andexcessivesterilizationtime(forinstance
t>30min at 140°C) could notably shorten the life
time ofthe electrode.Repeated sterilization and/or
autoclavingoftheelectrodecanleadtoaslightcol-
orationoftheelectrolyte.Thiscolorchangedoesnot
effectthefunctioningoftheelectrode.
6 Maintenance
1. Carefullyrinsetheelectrodetipanddiaphragmwith
de-ionizedwateraftereachproductioncycle.Under
no circumstances must measuring solution be al-
lowedtodryontheseparts!
2. Whentheelectrodeisnotinoperation,storeitwith
electrodetipanddiaphragmwellsubmergedinto
9823/3MKClor9816/Viscolyt™electrolyte.

3. Iftheelectrodeisstoredmountedinitshousing,
thesameruleasdescribedinpoint2applies,but
thestorageelectrolytehastobeslightlymodied,
with2partsofbuffersolutionpH9.2to10parts
ofelectrolyte,thisinordertoavoidcorrosionof
housingparts
4. Ifaelectrodeisstoreddryforafewdaysbymis-
take,letitsoakinthenormalstorageelectrolyte
forseveralhoursbeforeuse.
5. Occasionallychecktheconnectorforpossibletrac-
esofmoisture.Ifnecessary,cleanwellwithde-ion-
izedwateroralcohol,andafterwardsdrycarefully.
7 Trouble-shooting (sluggish response time,
insufcient sensitivity etc.)
TheglassmembranecanbereactivatedusingaHF
solution (order no. 51 319 053). The electrode tip
(onlypHsensitiveglasspart) isimmersedintothe
HFsolutionforaperiodofabout5minutes,isthen
immediately and thoroughly rinsed with de-ionized
waterandthereafterstoredinbuffersolutionpH4(see
Chapter6)uptothediaphragmfor12hours.
Possibleproteinprecipitationandblockageofthedi-
aphragmcan be treated withour special electrode
cleaner(orderno.51340068).However,useofthe
diaphragmcleaner(orderno.51340070)isnormal-
lynotnecessaryforthiselectrodetype,asthebuilt-in
silver-iontrappreventstheformationofsilversulde
contamination.
Also,checktheconnectorforpossibletracesofmois-
ture.Ifnecessary,cleanwellusingde-ionizedwater
oralcohol,andafterwardsdrycarefully.
8 Disposal
Ifnorelativeofcialregulationsareinforce,usedor
defectiveInPro 3030electrodesand thepackaging
canbedisposedoffasordinaryhouseholdwaste.
9 Warranty
Intheeventofmanufacturingfaults,12monthswar-
rantyfromdateofproductionisgranted.
