How to repair surfaces
Stains and dirty marks Adhesive residue Abrasive compounds
During assembly and storage of the parts, their surfaces may accidentally pick up stains or other dirt. These steps will show you how to clean them.
Stains and dirty marks can occur on painted parts.
If using a damp cloth or a strip of tape doesn’t work, you
may need to use a ne abrasive compound. This works
better for smaller areas.
Sometimes, when
you remove tape
that you have
used to hold
parts together
temporarily, it
leaves some of its
adhesive behind
on the surfaces of
the parts.
These cleaners contain ne particles of an abrasive
substance, and are often supplied along with a polishing
cloth. When used together, these act like a ne wet and dry
paper, removing small irregularities and smoothing the
areas that they’re used on.
Place a fresh strip of
tape over the
adhesive residue on
the surface, and
press down.
Peel o the tape,
which should take
the residue with it.
Repeat if necessary.
Dampen a cloth and lightly wipe away the stain or
dirt. If it is in a hard-to-reach area, use a cotton swab.
Apply a small amount of
the compound to the
accompanying cloth, and
lightly wipe over the
aected area in a circular
motion. Then, when the
compound becomes
powdery and dry, wipe it
o with a damp cloth.

Prepare the boot cover lining stay. You will notice that it
extends like a telescope.
Place the boot cover lining with the inside (black side)
facing up. Hold the stay next to it, as shown above, with the
thinner end nearer the lining and the open side facing up.
Align the hole at the end of the stay with the circled hole
in the lining.

Insert a 1.7 × 4mm screw into the hole at the end
of the stay.
After adjusting the screw, test the telescopic extension of
the stay. If it is too loose, wrap some tissue around the
outlined area and lightly squeeze it with pliers.
Tighten the 1.7 × 4mm screw into the hole, securing the
stay to the boot cover lining.
Mark the stage number on the bag of unused screws.
Pivot the stay on its hinge. If it is too loose, tighten the
screw a little more; if it is too tight, try loosening the screw.

Lamborghini Countach LP 500S
Here you can see that
the paint has lost its
usual gloss nish
because something
has rubbed against it.
You can use a coarse polishing compound to
eliminate scratches and irregularities in the
surface, and then nish with the ne polishing
compound.
Fine polishing compound will bu the surface of
the parts, and it will also polish away blemishes
like the one shown on the left if used with
slightly more force.
The parts are provided painted, but the paint can be damaged if it gets rubbed or scraped
against another component, or if the part is dropped.
Scratches on painted surfaces
If the parts have long or deep scratches, or the metal is visible underneath the paint, then carry out the process shown in the following steps.
Deep scratches
Anything worse than a slight blemish, such as a scratch or a larger area
of non-uniformity in the nish, will take more work to repair.
Larger marks or scratches
Obtain some micro-mesh abrasive cloth,
which acts like wet-and-dry sandpaper
but is made of a synthetic fabric. It
enables you to work on curved areas
with ease.
Cut some micro-mesh cloth to a suitable
size.
Soak the cloth in water, and lightly
polish the parts surface.
If you drop the parts, there is a chance
that they could become scratched deep
enough to reveal the metal below.
A B C D
Deep scratches
Metal is visible.
First you will need to work out the extent of the damage, then you can decide how best to deal with it.
How to deal with scratches
364
Lamborghini Countach LP 500S
Use a thin brush to paint the aected
area. If bare metal is visible, use a darker
shade of red to cover it; if its only a
surface scratch and the metal isn’t
visible, use a lighter shade. Once dry,
paint over the area with the correct
shade of red paint.
Then use the ne polishing compound
to bu the surface of the part.
Leave the paint to dry completely. Then
wrap some dampened micro-mesh cloth
around a stick and rub it lightly over the
paint to smooth it.
Finally, use a non-woven fabric to wipe
any polishing compound residue from
the surface of the part.
Apply some coarse polishing compound to a cloth and rub the surface of the part with it
to smooth it further.
Next, prepare the paint for retouching. The colour used on this model is called ‘Mr.
Color Monza red No. 86’. It is a good idea to have a slightly darker and a slightly
lighter shade of red paint available as well, to cover the scratch and act as an
undercoat for the correct colour.
