Airport history
Trondheim Airport Værnes, located in Northern-Trøndelag in the
municipal of Stjørdal serves as the city of Trondheim and the surround-
ing areas’ main domestic and international airport.
The airport is partially owned by the Norwegian Military and expanded
during the cold war to serve as a NATO airfield. Most of the military
presence has now been moved to other airfields and bases although
it’s not uncommon to still see military flights there. Værnes is the
second oldest airport in Norway.
The area’s recorded history stretches back to the viking age, being one
of the main centers of power for the Trøndelag area. When Harald
Fairhair climbed to power as the first king of a united Norway the
power center was moved to Lade, located in what now is Trondheim.
After Norway adapted Christendom, (usually contributed to Olaf ll
conquests) churches were built to replace the now hedonistic rituals
and practices performed in the Norse religion.
One of these were Værnes Church. Still standing today it’s the oldest
preserved stone building in Norway, located south-east of Værnes
Airport.

The airport itself dates back to the 1914, the plan at the time was to
establish an Air Service for the Norwegian military and the Værnes
area was chosen to strengthen the defense capabilities of central and
northern Norway. The first flight took place the 26. of March 1914
with an Maurice Farman 7 nicknamed Olav Tryggvessøn. Grants were
issued by the Norwegian government but also by civilian contributers
in the area and the military presence kept growing at Værnes.
In 1940 the airfield was surrendered to Germany during WW2 and
started seeing major expansions to accommodate the bombers and
fighters now stationed there. A wooden runway was built to replace
the grass strip currently used, this was later replaced with three
concrete runways. After the war ended the airfield was returned to
the Norwegian Military.
After the war civilian flights were flown to Hommelvika with sea-
planes, located just to the south-west of Værnes. In 1952 SAS started
operating regular flights to and from Værnes and civilian traffic
increased drastically. With the increase of jet traffic the runway was
extended into the fjord, the airport facilities were improved and a new
terminal building was completed in 1965. But due to the heavy
increase of charter traffic during the 60’s and early 70’s the capacity of
the newly finished terminal was soon exceeded. What’s now knowns
as Terminal B was constructed to try and cope with the passenger
growth but it was also soon too small, it was then decided to move all
international flights to Terminal B and build yet another terminal to
handle only domestic flights, this terminal still serves as Trondheim’s
main terminal, Terminal A. After Terminal A was built in 1994 no major
expansion was done except for a new Control Tower in 2005. In 2014
the first part of a 50 year plan to handle expected passenger growth
was completed, Terminal A was extended 75 meters to the west and a
new Terminal, called “Terminal West” was added. Terminal West
serves as a commuter terminal, mainly seeing Wideroe traffic.
Currently Værnes is the fourth largest airport in Norway, seeing
60,934 air movements and 4,4 million passengers in 2015. The
airports serves as a major hub for Norwegian, Scandinavian Airlines
System (SAS) and Widerøe. The busiest route is between Trondheim
and Oslo, usually seeing an aggressive competition between the
different airlines, especially after Oslo’s airport was moved from
Fornebu to Gardermoen. Never before could low-cost airlines acquire
sufficient slot-times to compete with the already established airlines
such as SAS and Braathens. This resulted in the Trondheim – Oslo
route becoming the 4th busiest in Europe during the late 90’s, seeing
39 flights per day operated by three different airlines. The route is still
the 6th busiest in Europe, serving 1,9 million passengers in 2015.

Technical advice
Compatibility with other Third Party add-ons.
Compatibility issues with other add-ons usually occur when multiple
AFCAD files are active for one airport. The AFCAD file creates the
layout of the airport and has general information including elevation,
runways, taxiways and parking positions.
Many non-airport add-ons includes custom AFCAD files, e.g. AI traffic
add-ons packages and Landclass/Terrain packages are known to
include these kinds of files.
It’s critical to only have one AFCAD file active at the time, failing to do
so could result in incorrect display of the airport, such as levitating AI
traffic and terrain mesh graphical artifacts.
Included with this scenery is a Configuration Tool, this tool will do a
automatic search for files that
could cause the scenery to display incorrectly.
To read more about this tool see the “Configuration Tool” chapter.
Animated Jetways
The scenery features animated jetways, to utilize this feature SODE is
needed and the appropriate settings has to be applied in the Scenery
Configuration Tool. Passenger boarding animations are also included,
to see these these animations the “airport level of detail” settings in
the Configuration Tool has to be set to High. If a lower Level of detail
is selected the jetways will still be animated, but the passengers will
not be displayed. For the jetway to attach correctly, the aircraft xml file
needs to include correct exit information, for more information on this
please see the SODE user manual.
Animated Hangar Doors
Three of the hangars at Værnes includes animated hangar doors,
these are activated via the SODE menu. Two of the hangars are located
to the south-east of Terminal B, “Helitrans” and “Værnes Aeroclub”.
The third “Rely” is located next to the de-ice platforms at the far east
of the airport.
De-Ice Service
The scenery includes custom De-Ice animations during the winter
season, this feature requires SODE to be displayed. To use the feature
taxi to the De-Ice platform (M1) located to the east of the terminals.
The animation is triggered via the SODE menu.
Sim Object Display Engine (SODE)
To see all the features included with this scenery SODE is required, if
you do not wish to use SODE you can disable these features via the
configuration tool included with the scenery.
SODE is used to change seasonal textures and trigger animations
depending on certain conditions, if SODE is disabled you will have to
change the seasonal textures manually through the configuration tool
and certain features are disabled. See list bellow for more detail.

correct path to the “SODE Common Data Folder” by default the path
should be: “C:\ProgramData\12bPilot\SODE”
(NOT to be confused with the SODE folder located inside “Program-
files (x86)”)
If the path to the SODE Common Data Folder is missing or incorrect a
warning will be displayed, use the folder icon in the configuration tool
to choose the correct path.
FSX/P3D Scenery Library
The Scenery Library inside FSX or P3D is used to add or remove
sceneries, after installation of this scenery is complete an entry for
“Vaernes V2.0” should be added to the list.
The order these add-ons are sorted is critical to ensure that they
display correctly.
A rule of thumb is to have add-ons that cover large areas, such as
Terrain Mesh or Land-class bellow add-ons for airports. When add-ons
are installed or in some cases updated they can move to a higher
priority in the scenery list, make sure to check your scenery library after
you install or update an add-on to ensure that the scenery priorities
are still correct.
Configuration Tool
The scenery includes a Configuration Tool to allow you to adjust the
amount of details and enable or disable certain features in the scenery,
below you’ll find a summary of the options available.
SODE
This check-box enables or disables the SODE specific features included
with the scenery, for more details regarding the features that are
effected please see the “Sim Object Display Engine (SODE)” chapter in
this manual.
FTX Norway
This check-box is for users that have FTX Norway installed. This will
change the dates the photo real ground textures changes seasons,
since these are different compared with the default scenery.
Animated Jetways (SODE)
This check-box enables or disables animated jetways, this check-box
requires SODE to be enabled.
Animations
This setting adjusts the amount of animated objects that are displayed
(cars, ground equipment, flags, trains etc.)
Airport Level Of Detail
This setting adjusts the amount of detail displayed at the airport, a
lower setting reduces the number of objects displayed and the level of
detail of those.
Passenger boarding through jetways are also effected by this setting,
to see passenger boarding the setting must be set to “high”.
Vicinity Level Of Detail
This setting adjusts the number of custom objects loaded for the
surrounding area.
Model Textures
This setting allows you to change between different sets of texture
resolutions for the building and ground models.
Trondheim-Værnes X V2

Night Textures
This setting allows you to change the light map resolution for the
buildings and ground textures.
Ambient Occlusions
This setting allows you to change the resolution of the prebaked soft
shadows for the ground textures.
Specular Maps
This setting allows you to change the resolution of the specularity
textures for the models and ground textures, these are used to
calculate the specular highlights (often seen on windows and metallic
objects)
Static Aircraft
This option allows you to enable or disable static aircraft at some of
the terminal gates.
If this option is enabled the parking positions where static aircrafts are
placed will be disabled and user or AI traffic can’t park there. (Static
Aircraft are not placed at parking positions with jetways.)
Administrator Rights
For the Configuration Tool to work properly it has to run with adminis-
trator rights, if you do not have the proper administrator rights for
your windows user right click the “Aerosoft - Vaernes v2 – ConfigTool.
exe” file and select “Run as administrator”.
SODE Common Data Path
When SODE is enabled the configuration tool needs to know the
correct path to the “SODE Common Data Folder” by default the path
should be: “C:\ProgramData\12bPilot\SODE”
(NOT to be confused with the SODE folder located inside “Program-
files (x86)”)
If the path to the SODE Common Data Folder is missing or incorrect a
warning will be displayed, use the folder icon in the configuration tool
to choose the correct path.
Search for conflicting scenery files
The configuration tool will run an automatic search in the simulators
main directory for files that could cause compatibility issues. This
search happens when you click “Install selected”, if any files are found
a window will be displayed giving you the option to automatically
disable the files by renaming them to “.off”.
If you wish to reactivate the files open the “Recovery” folder located
in the configtool directory. Inside you’ll find recovery files with time
stamps, run the file as an administrator and it will revert any changes
done by the configuration tool.
If you do not want the configuration tool to automatically disable the
files; select “No” when the window appears. A log-file named
“SceneryConflictLOG.txt” will be created in the Configuration Tools
main directory, this file includes all the possible conflicts found and it’s
recommended to go through these and disable the appropriate files.
After the “Install selected” button is pressed it’s normal for a short
delay while the tool completes it’s search. This should not be more
than a few seconds, but could vary depending on your computer
specifications and amount of add-ons installed.
