1. Important information for the installation of the Ericsson hands-free facility
Only for use within the BMW dealer organisation.
The Ericsson hands-free facility may only be installed by a specialist workshop that has the
required special tools and manuals (servicing, repair, diagnostics, etc.).
Ensure that the cables/lines are not kinked or damaged as you install them in the car.
Additional cables/lines that you install must be secured with cable ties.
Item numbers refer only to the parts overview, capital letters to the connection overview
and small letters only to the texts next to the appropriate figure.
The retrofit/installation kit contains a black telephone console. If a coloured telephone
console is required it must be ordered separately using the electronic parts catalogue
(EPC).

The precise position of the retaining clips
(dimensions d and e) has a major bearing on
how well the telephone console will fit on the
centre console.
Remove the Philips screws (c) from the top and
side mounting for the cover trim (b).
Place the speed nuts (23) on the retaining clips
(19).
Raise the cover trim (b) in the direction indicated
by the arrow and push the retaining clips (19)
between the cover trim (b) and the centre conso-
le (a).
Dimension d = 30 mm
Dimension e = 95 mm
4. To install the telephone console (E36/2/3/4/C only)

Fit the holder (24) on the centre console (a) using
the positioning lugs (see arrows) and secure it to
the retaining clips (19) with the self-tapping
screws ST3.9 x 19 (20).
After correctly installing the holder (24) on the
centre console, slide the telephone console (25)
into the guide rail (24a) and swing it upwards
until the holes (in the telephone console and hol-
der) line up.
Secure the telephone console (25) to the holder
(24) using self-tapping screws ST3.9 x 13 (21).
The resulting stressing will considerably
increase the load capacity and the stability of the
BMW telephone console on the centre
console.

Engage the cover (26) with the guides (26a) at
the top in the telephone console (25), turn it
downwards until the engagement pin locks and
secure with the with self-tapping screw ST2.9 x
9.5 (22).

console (31) between the cover trim (a) and the
instrument panel (b).
Align the telephone console (31) on the centre
console (a) and the instrument panel (d).
Press the cover trim (b) on to the instrument
panel (d) and secure it with the Philips screws
(c).
Press the telephone console (31) on to the cen-
tre console (a) in the direction indicated by the
arrow and secure it with a self-tapping screw
ST4.2 x 16 (32).

The figure shows the trim (a) on the E36/5,
proceed accordingly on other models.
The spacers (7) are only required for models with
a footwell light (b).
Remove the insulation mat in the installation area
if necessary.
Position the control module (2) as shown, mark
the positions of the holes and drill them with a
4.5 mm drill bit.
Secure the control module (2) with screws M4 x
16 (3), washers (4) and nuts M4 (5) and with the
spacers (7) if necessary.

8. Installation and wiring diagram
The figure shows the E36/4, proceed accordingly on other models.
The microphone (10*) is to be installed in the instrument panel on the left below the light
switch on the E36/5, on the other models it is installed in the oddments box in the centre
console.Tie back excess cable lengths on the vehicle wiring harness.
Secure the holder (1) for the mobile phone on the telephone console and lay branch D1 to
the installation location of the control module (2) for the hands-free facility.
Secure the control module (2) for the hands-free facility on the footwell trim on the left.
Prepare the switch module (16) with the pin contacts supplied and the white 4-pin plug
casing and install it in the A pillar on the left and connect it.
Connect the basic wiring harness B, connect branch B8 to branch D2 and lay branches B6
and B7 along the audio wiring harness into the boot on the left.
Install and connect the microphone (10*):
E36/5 in the instrument panel on the left under the light switch
E36/2/3/4/C in the oddments box in the centre console.
Connect the wiring harness A to the basic wiring harness B and the control module (2) for
the hands-free facility and tie them back.

9. To install the holder for the mobile phone
DThe figure shows the telephone console (25) for the E36/2/3/4/C, proceed accordingly
on the E36/5.
When inserting the mounting plate (1e) ensure that the threaded insert (1f) is inserted.
Depending on the design of the mobile phone, the extension piece from the installation kit
may have to be inserted between the top (1b) and bottom (1a) parts of the holder (1).
Align the holder (1a f) and mounting plate (1e) on the cover (26) of the telephone console
(25) and mark the positions of the holes.
Drill the marked holes with a 2 mm drill bit and secure the mounting plate (1e) with self-tap-
ping screws ST4.2x16Z2 (6).
Align the top part (1b) on the mounting plate (1e) and secure it with a screw (1c) and washer
(1d).
Insert the bottom part (1a) in the top part (1b) and press it in until it engages.
It may be necessary to cut the centre console slight to ensure that branches D1 and D2
are not jammed as they pass through.
Lay branch D1 to the installation location of the control module for the hands-free module in
the footwell on the left.
Lay branch D2 to the centre console near the gearshift or selector lever.

Disconnect branches C1, C2 and C3 with the
dimension a = 250 mm from the switch module.
Branches C1, C2 and C3 are no longer required.
Disconnect the blade terminals from branches
C4 and C5, blue/white and blue/brown cables.
Fit the remaining four cables on the switch
module C with the pin contacts (14) and connect
them to the plug casing (15) as follows:

Remove the footwell speaker (d) and disconnect
the connection cables (b and c).
Push the shrink hoses (17) on to branches C8
and C9, yellow/red and yellow/brown cables,
connect branches C8 and C9 to the connection
cables (b and c) and insulate them with the
shrink hoses (17).
Connect branches C6 and C7, yellow/white and
yellow/brown cables, to the footwell speaker (d)
and install the footwell speaker (d).
Connect the white 4-pin plug casing (15) on the
switch module C to branch B4.
Connect branches B10 and C12 to the earth
post X18723 (b).
Disconnect the plug connector X322 (a) and
connect it to branches B2 and B3. Connect
branches B1 and A1.
Tie back the switch module C behind the foo-
trest with cable ties and install the bottom A pil-
lar trim.
Branch A2 is not required tie it back on the
wiring harness.

Connect branches A3, A4, A5, A6 and D1 to the
control module (2) and secure it with a small
cable tie (8).
Tie back surplus lengths of the cables and install
the footwell trim.

Insert the console (27) for the microphone (10)
with the cover (29) and base (30) in the odd-
ments box (28).
Remove the cigarette lighter and switch from the
old oddments box and install them in the new
oddments box (28).
Refer to the direction of the arrows when you
install the microphone (10).
Insert the assembled oddments box (28) into the
centre console, connect branch B5 to the micro-
phone (10) and press the microphone (10) into
position.
