z
To avoid an electric shock, do not connect an ultra low voltage circuit terminal to a
communication network voltage circuit terminal.
z
To protect your eyes from the laser, do not look into the optical fiber outlet with unaided
eyes.
z
To avoid an electric shock, wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap, ESD-preventive gloves,
and ESD-preventive clothes, and take off electricity conductive objects such as
ornaments and watches before handling the devices.
z
When a fire accident occurs, run out of the buildings or the device installation site
immediately, and press the fire alarm or phone the fire department. Do not re-enter the
buildings that are on fire.

1 Precautions
FileStore N8300 Clustered NAS Storage System
Hardware Installation Guide
A-4 Symantec Corporation Issue 01 (2009-12-15)
Large Creepage Current
The devices must be grounded before the power supply is switched on. Otherwise, the safety
of operators and devices may be impaired.
If a "Large Creepage Current" label is affixed beside the power supply terminal, the protection
grounding terminal on the device shell must be grounded before connecting to an AC input
power supply to avoid the electric shock on the human body caused by the creepage current of
the device.
Power Cable
Installation and removal of live cables are prohibited. Transient contact between the core of
the power cable and the conductor may generate electric arc or spark, which may cause fire
accidents or eye injuries.
z
Before installing or removing the power cables, turn off the power switch.
z
Before connecting the power cables, confirm that the labels and marks on the power
cables comply with the requirements of the actual installation.
Fuse
For the safe device running, replace the blown fuse with a fuse of the same type and
specifications.
Electrostatic Discharge
The static electricity generated by the human body may damage the electrostatic sensitive
components on the circuit board such as the large-scale integrated circuit (LIC).
z
In the following situations, the human body will generate a static electromagnetic field:
human body moving, clothes friction, friction between shoes and the ground, or holding
ordinary plastic in hand. The static electromagnetic field will remain within the human
body for a long time.
FileStore N8300 Clustered NAS Storage System
Hardware Installation Guide 1 Precautions
Issue 01 (2009-12-15) Symantec Corporation A-5
z
Before touching the device, or hand-holding circuit boards or ASICs, wear a grounded
electrostatic discharge (ESD) preventive wrist strap. It can prevent the sensitive
components from being damaged by the static electricity in the human body.
1.3 Laser
This section describes the safety precautions against the laser.
When handling optical fibers, do not stand close to, or look into the optical fiber outlet
directly with unaided eyes.
Laser transceivers and transmitters are used in the optical transmission system and related test
tools. The optical fiber or the connector transmits the laser that has a very high power density
and is invisible to human. The retina may be damaged if you look into the laser outlet with
unaided eyes.
Viewing a naked optical fiber end or damaged optical fiber with unaided eyes at a distance
greater than 150 mm will not cause eye injuries. However, damage may occur if an optical
tool such as a microscope, magnifying glass, or eye loupe is used to view the energized
optical fiber end.
Laser Safety Guidelines
Read the following guidelines to avoid laser radiation:
z
All the operations should be performed by the authorized personnel who have completed
the approved trainings.
z
Wear a pair of goggles when you are handling lasers or fibers.
z
Ensure that the optical source is switched off before disconnecting optical fiber
connectors.
z
Do not look into the end of a naked optical fiber or an open connector when you are not
sure whether the optical source is switched off or not.
z
Ensure that the optical source is switched off by measuring the optical power with an
optical power meter.
z
Before opening the front door of an optical transmission system, ensure that you are not
exposed to laser radiation.
z
Do not use an optical tool such as a microscope, a magnifying glass, or an eye loupe to
observe the optical connector or the optical fiber end.
Handling Optical Fibers
Obey the following requirements when handling fibers.
z
Cutting and splicing optical fibers must be performed by the trained personnel only.
z
Before cutting or splicing an optical fiber, ensure the optical fiber is disconnected from
the optical source. After disconnecting the optical fiber, protect all the optical connectors
by using optical fiber caps.

1.4 Others
This section describes the safety precautions during inserting and removing a board, bundling
signal cables, and handling cables at a low temperature.
Inserting and Removing a Board
When inserting a board, wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap and ESD-preventive gloves, and insert the
board gently to avoid distorting pins on the backplane.
z
Insert the board along the slot guide.
z
To avoid short-circuit or scratch, ensure that either side of a board is not in contact with
that of another board.
z
To avoid damaging the sensitive components by the electrostatic discharge of your body,
do not touch the board circuit, components, connectors, or connection slots with a bare
hand.
Bundling Signal Cables
The signal cables must be bundled separately from the large-current cables or high-voltage cables at a
spacing of at least 30 mm.
Laying Cables
The plastic skin of the power cables may crack due to an ultra low temperature and an intense
impact or vibration. To ensure the safety of the construction, obey the following requirements.
z
All cables must be laid at a temperature above zero.
z
If the cables are stored at a temperature below zero, they must be moved to a new place
and stored at the room temperature for more than 24 hours before being laid.
