Increased torque for screws
Stronger washers for covers on reciprocating compressors
Modified gaskets for HPO and SMC/TSMC 180 reciprocating compressors
Due to increasing demands on the compressors as a result of new areas of application with higher temperature and
pressure conditions, it has proved necessary to increase the torque of the screws securing the compressor covers
to the compressor block.
The increased torque has the result that hardened and thus stronger washers must be used in order to secure that
the washers are able to withstand the bigger screw forces. The following list includes the part numbers of the washers.
However, the washers are also available in sets for each compressor type.
The gasket material for the end covers on the HPO compressors and the top and side covers for the SMC and TSMC
180 compressors has been changed to a high-pressure quality material. The thickness of the gaskets for the top,
side and end covers for the SMC and TSMC 180 compressors is changed from 1.5 mm to 1.0 mm.
The type of screws used so far will still be used as indicated in the following list, and it is recommended to check the
material quality which is stamped on the screw head. The material quality is also included in the list.
The screws must always be tightened in the order described in the Instruction Manual. First they are tightened with
an open-end wrench to approx. 40% of the indicated torque. Then they are tightened with a calibrated torque
wrench to 70% of the indicated torque and finally to the prescribed torque. Check the torque after 4 to 6 hours'
operation. The check must take place when the compressor is cold again.
Do not lubricate the gaskets and the sealing surfaces of the covers and the compressor block before mount-
ing the gaskets. New gaskets must be fitted every time the covers are dismounted.
General
All the new part numbers in the following list are available from stock.
As from 1 December 2000 all compressors delivered from the factory will be mounted and tightened as described
above.
Washers
When servicing the compressors, the previous washers must be replaced with hardened washers before the screws
are tightened to the increased torque.
Gaskets
If nothing else is indicated in the list below, the existing gasket types can be used with the increased torque.
However, for the SMC 186-188/TSMC 188, 1.0 mm gaskets must be used in connection with the increased torque.
For the SMC 4, 6, 8 - 180 (compressor type Mk1) the new high-pressure gasket must be used in connection with
the increased torque.
