Werecommendthatthesensormayonlybeinoperation
withtheoriginalaccessoriesfromMETTLERTOLEDO.The
sensor may be operated and serviced only by personnel
familiarwiththeunit,andwhohavereadandunderstood
thisinstructionmanual.
1 Installation
a Whenunpacking,checkelectrodeforpossiblemechanical
damage to the pH sensitive glass, the diaphragm or the
body.Electrodessubjecttocomplaintsmustbereturnedto
usortoouragentintheoriginalboxindicatingtheinvoice
number.
b Takeoffwateringcapandwashtheelectrodetipwithdistilled
water.Afterrinsingwithdistilledwater,dabtheelectrodewith
atissue.Donotrubas anincreaseof theresponsetime
mightresult.
c Important: Reference electrolyte ller tube:The T-shaped
rubber stopper as well as the elastic securing band ha-
ve to be removed completely from the electrode,before
insertingtheelectrodeintothehousing.RemoveanyKCl
solutionresidinginthellingport.Re-assemblethehousing
asdescribedintheinstructionforthehousing.
d EliminateanyairbubblestrappedbehindthepHsensitive
glassbysmoothlyswingingtheunitintheverticalplane.
Thelead-offelementoftheglasselectrodemustdipintothe
innerbuffersolutionwithoutairbubbles.
e CombinationpHelectrodesstoreddryforseveraldayshave
tobesoakedintheappropriatestoragesolutionforseveral
hoursbeforeuse.Itisrecommendedtostorecombination
andreferenceelectrodesinthereferenceelectrolytesolution.
f Afteralonganddrystorageperiod,thepHsensitiveglasscan
bereactivatedwithhydrouoricacid(orderno.51319053):

dippingtheelectrode intothebufferandadjustingthepH

3 Maintenance
a Aftereachmeasuringcycletheelectrodetipandtheliquid
junctionmustbethoroughlyrinsedwithdistilledwater.Under
nocircumstancemusttheelectrodebeallowedtodrywith
measuringsolutioncoatingit.This is very important.
b On storage ofanassembledprobe, tip and liquid juncti-
onmustbeleftfullyimmersedinanalkalineKClsolution
(10partsof3MKClorViscolytplus2partsofbuffersolution
pH9.2).WithouttheadditionofbuffersolutionpH9.2the
housingmaycorrode.
c Theliquidlevelofthereferenceelectrolytemustbechecked
regularly.Ifithassunkbelowthebulbousshaftsectionof
theelectrode,thereferenceelectrolytemustbereplenished.
Attention is drawn to the instructions given in 1.g. above.
d Rapid rise in resistance of reference electrode: A rapid rise
inresistanceofthereferenceelectrode(upto1MΩ)after2
to 3 measuring cycles may occasionally be noticed in media
whicharehighlyenrichedwithproteins.Mosttransmitters
areverysensitivetothisriseinresistance,whichmanifests
itselfthroughadrift.Ifthishappens,theelectrodeshouldbe
treatedwithourelectrodecleaner(orderno.51340068).
Apreventiveaction is tousecombinationelectrodes with
Friscolyt-Breferenceelectrolyte(sufx/9848inproductde-
signation).
e Black diaphragm (liquid junction):If the solution to be
measuredcontainssuldecompounds,theliquidjunction
maybecomeblack.Simultaneously,itsresistancewillrise
signicantly.Suchanelectrodedoesnotworkproperlyany
longerandtreatingwithourdiaphragmcleaner(orderno.
51340070)becomesnecessary.
Apreventivemeasureistheuseofcombinationelectrodest-
tedwithasilver-iontrap(code–SC–inproductdesignation).
4 Cables
Makecertainthattheshieldofthecoaxialcablecarryingthe

never connected to ground.
