Version 4
Installation Guide
for System Administrators
Overview
If you’re a system administrator, this guide shows you how to deploy SMART Ideas software 4 in a
computer lab environment.
For either Windows® or Mac networks, we suggest you perform a silent install. Of course, you can
perform a silent install in conjunction with ghosting and/or remote management tools to further automate
the installation process.
If you have Windows users who are having difficulty using earlier versions of SMART Ideas software clip
art, you may need to change their file access permissions (see page 2).
While we recommend that you perform a silent install on each computer, you may alternatively direct your
users to run SMART Ideas software from a shared drive. Instructions are provided for this option at the
end of this document.
Silently Installing SMART Ideas Software on Windows Operating Systems
You can silently install SMART Ideas 4.x on any supported Windows operating system by running the
InstallShield® MSI (Microsoft® Installer) on one computer, and then silently running it again on any other
computer with identical settings to the first computer. This method works with native network
administration tools (such as Active Directory) to silently distribute SMART Ideas software onto entire
computer labs from a central server.
To perform the silent install, you just install the software on the first computer in record mode, and then
run the file produced by the recorded install on subsequent computers.
NOTE: The initial computer—the computer on which you perform a full install in record mode—should
have a similar setup to the other computers in the lab or on the network.
To install SMART Ideas software in record mode
1. Insert the SMART Ideas software CD into the computer’s CD drive.
2. Start DOS and change directories to the CD drive.
3. Enter /SMART Ideas/Setup.exe/ r.
4. Install SMART Ideas software on the computer as you normally would.
This records the entire installation into a file called Setup.iss, which is placed at the root of the
Windows directory.
To silently install SMART Ideas software on other machines
1. Insert the SMART Ideas software CD into the target computer’s CD drive.
OR
Copy the setup files to a network location and run them from there.
2. Start DOS and enter Setup.exe /s /f1"full path to the Setup.iss file\setup.iss"
/f2"C:\temp\smartideas.log" /z"-sn SERIAL_NO" where SERIAL_NO is the SMART Ideas serial
number.
This will run the install in unattended mode and register the serial number.
1
If the silent installation fails, the smartideas.log file will show a result code < 0.
File Permissions Required for Clip Art Use in Early Versions
If users receive “permission denied” errors when trying to drag clip art from the SMART Ideas software
clip art library, you’ll need to provide them with enhanced access to the SMART Ideas program folder.
For the clip art library to function properly, all the subfolders under C:\Program Files\SMART Ideas should
have read, write and modify permissions for end users. Note that this enhanced access is not required for
versions 4.2.1 and later of SMART Ideas software.
To ensure all users have read, write and modify permissions
1. Right-click C:\Program Files\SMART Ideas.
2. Select Properties.
3. Click the Security tab.
4. Select Users or Everyone from the users list.
5. Click Full Control.
6. Select the Advanced button.
7. Click Replace permission entries on all child objects.
Silently Installing SMART Ideas Software on the Mac OS X Operating System
To perform a successful silent installation of SMART Ideas software on Macintosh operating systems, you
must install version 4.3 or later. This version of SMART Ideas software is available for download from
http://ideas.smarttech.com/bim/SMARTIdeas4.3MacBeta.
IMPORTANT: While version 4.3 of SMART Ideas software does not require authentication of the user,
the user must be designated as the administrator of the computer.
To perform a silent install in Mac OS X
1. Download the SMART Ideas installer file SMARTIdeas4309.dmg from
http://ideas.smarttech.com/bin/SMARTIdeas4.3MacBeta to the computer.
2. Double-click SMARTIdeas4309.dmg to extract the installation files to the desired folder.
3. Download installer.properties from http://ideas.smarttech.com/bin/SMARTIdeas4.3MacBeta (or
create your own file; it’s just one line: INSTALLER_UI=silent) and place it in the same folder as the
extracted installation files.
4. If you want to install to SMART Ideas software somewhere other than the default install folder, add
the line USER_INSTALL_DIR=location to the installer.properties file, where location equals the new
install path.
5. If you want to add the SMART Ideas software serial number to the silent install, add the line
SERIALNO=### to the installer.properties file, where ### equals the SMART Ideas software serial
number.
6. Launch the installer.

Installing and Running SMART Ideas Software from a Shared Drive
If you install it on a shared network drive, any computer that can access the shared drive can run SMART
Ideas software from that location. However, this setup doesn’t allow users to customize program settings
such as color preferences and default palettes.
In this example, let’s assume you’re installing the software to a folder called Z:\Programs\SMART Ideas
where the Z: drive is a network drive and the Z:\Programs\SMART Ideas folder is visible to all users.
1. Log on as the administrator at a computer with access to the shared drive.
2. Install SMART Ideas software to the Z:\Programs\SMART Ideas folder.
3. Open the Z:\Programs\SMART Ideas folder.
4. Set the files in this folder as read-only. To do this, follow these steps:
a. From the folder’s menu, select Edit > Select All.
b. Right-click the selected files, and then select Properties.
c. Under Attributes, select the Read-only check box.
5. For each computer that uses the shared SMART Ideas software, create desktop shortcuts to
Z:\Programs\SMART Ideas\Bin\Ideas.exe
