Stage 23: Pins, bamboo and
sapele strips for the hull
3 Fix a third strip from the midpoint of rib frame 20 to the end
of the hull, as shown in the two photos.
4 Repeat the same operation on the other side of the hull.

2 Glue a second strip from the midpoint of rib frame 13 to the
midpoint of rib frame 20.

1 Take the hull of your model. Taper a bamboo strip, as shown
in the inset photo, and x it on the lower part of the hull,
between the rst bow former and the midpoint of rib frame 13.

5 Continue the assembly by xing another strip that you have
previously tapered. e strip should go from the midpoint of rib
frame 5 to the midpoint of rib frame 13.
6 With a ne-grained sanding block, smooth the strip you have
just xed so that it is level with that of the previous row.
6
910
10 Continue the assembly by xing the next row. Taper the rst
strip, aligning it with the previous ones, and x it between the
bow former and the midpoint of rib frame 7.
9 In a similar manner, x a full row of strips on the opposite side
of the hull.
8 Taper a strip and complete the row by xing it from the
midpoint of rib frame 21 to the stern end of the hull, without
leaving any space between it and the row above.
8
7
7 Continue by xing a second strip from the midpoint of rib
frame 13 to the midpoint of rib frame 21.

16 Fit the rst piece of lling in the lowest space without glue. If
necessary, adjust the shape with a sanding block until it ts exactly.
Fix it to the hull with PVA glue.
12 Complete this row with a third strip, bent and tapered, from
the midpoint of rib frame 20 to the stern, as shown in the photos.
1211
11 Fix a second strip from the midpoint of rib frame 7 to the
midpoint of rib frame 20.
14
14 Take some pieces of left-over strip and ll in the spaces
between the rows of strakes on the stern.

21 Finish covering the rear part of the hull, repeating Steps 14 to

18 Take a spare strip and shape it, as shown in the inset photo.
Glue it on the section of keel that has no covering.
17 Repeat the operation with another four pieces of lling, as
shown in the photo.
17 18
20 With a ne-grained sanding block, smooth the edge of the
strips to make them level with the keel.
20
19
19 Prepare a second strip and x it next to the previous strip, making
it protrude slightly beyond the edge of the keel.

in the inset photo.
12 Using a ne-grained sanding block, smooth the strip that you
have just xed to align it with the previous row of strips.
1211
11 Take a piece of strip left over from the earlier stages. After
shaping it, as shown in the inset photo, x it to the hull in the
position shown in the main photo.
14
14 Take two spare strips. Place one on the stern reinforcements
and make a pencil mark that corresponds to the inner edge of the
covering strips.
13

22 Here is what the hull of the model looks like at the end of this
stage of assembly. Put it away in a safe place for the next assembly
session.
21 Repeat the procedure, preparing a second supporting piece
and x it on the other side of the hull.
18 Fix the support piece you have just prepared on the stern
reinforcements, as shown in the photo.
17 Apply a thin layer of glue on the stern reinforcements, at the
points shown in the photo.
17 18
20 Use a strip to check that the curve of the supporting piece
follows that of the rib frames at the stern of the hull.
20
19
19 With a ne-grained sanding block, smooth the reinforcing
piece, following the shape of the edge of the frames. Also smooth
the edge of the last strip of the stern.

rib frame 21.
9 Continue by xing a second strip from the midpoint of rib

15
16
16 Take the launch and the strips painted ivory white (Stages 20
and 21, if you chose the painted option). Place a strip on the inside
edge of the launch, at the point shown in the photo, and mark the
position of the opposite edge. Cut the strip to size.
12 Start a new row of strips. Taper the rst strip, as shown in
the inset photo, and x it between the rst bow former and the
midpoint of rib frame 13.
1211
11 Fix a fourth strip from the midpoint of rib frame 21 to the
end of the stern. In similar fashion, x a full row of strips on the
opposite side of the hull.
14
14 Fix a third strip from the midpoint of rib frame 20 to the end
of the hull. At the stern, leave a small gap between the strip and the
previous row, as shown in the photo.

spare material aside for the next assembly session.
21 Glue the thwart with the semi-circular notch inside the boat,
positioning it about 8mm from the previous one.
18 Prepare the next thwart in the same way, then x it inside the
boat in the position shown in the photo, at a distance of 8mm
from the rst.
17 With a at le, make two notches at the ends of the strip, as
shown in the inset photo. Put a little glue on them and x the piece
inside the boat, in the position shown in the photo.
17 18
20 With a round le, make a semi-circular notch in the centre of
the strip, following the measurements shown in the inset photo.

3 Use a ne-grained sanding block to level the strip with the
strips of the previous row.

2 Taper a strip of bamboo, as shown in the inset photo, and
place it on the hull, starting from an intermediate point between
rib frames 2 and 5 and reaching the midpoint of rib frame 15.
1
1 Take the hull of the model. In this assembly session, the aim
is to correct the shape of the rows of strips set at the centre of the
hull, reducing the space to be lled.
A Bamboo strips 2 x 5 x 300mm x 22
B Basswood strips 0.6 x 5 x 300mm x 25
