Four separate manuals provide you with instructions on how to use your varix SD 38 telephone.
Manual 1
Making and receiving calls plus setting up facilities
This manual contains general instructions on how to handle your varix SD 38 ISDN digital keyphone.
Using examples, it explains the types of key and the display, as well as standard telephoning and
exchange functions using internal and external call keys. In addition, it provides an overview of the ser-
vice menu in which facilities (e.g. call diversion, short code dialling) can be called up simply by pressing
the appropriate numeral keys. For ease of operation, facilities can also be programmed to free keys on
the telephone.
Manual 2
Use of MULTIFUNCTION keys
This manual describes how to use the MULTIFUNCTION keys. Here, several facilities are stored on one sin-
gle key. The user simply browses through to the required item before making the desired settings.
Manual 3
Central settings for the varix 14 and varix 200 digital PABX systems
This manual describes the central settings for your PABX system. These settings are usually made on the swit-
chboard operator’s telephone (e.g. programming of central short destination codes). The settings are protec-
ted by a password. The manual is supplied together with your PABX system.
Manual 4
Manager/secretary configurations
Your PABX system is equipped with a special feature allowing several telephones to be switched together in
a manager/secretary team constellation. This manual describes telephoning operations using this team vari-
ant and its particular features. The manual is supplied together with your PABX system.

General
Avarix SD 38
Your SD 38 ISDN comfort telephone can be used in conjunction with a varix 14 or a varix 200 PABX
system. It offers a wide variety of facilities allowing fast and flexible access to other subscribers.
Your telephone can be used at a single workplace, or additional keys can be installed enabling it to be
used in various configurations at a team workplace. On the following pages, some of the most common key
functions are explained. Please note that your telephone may have been configured with a different key
layout.
In addition to the numeral keys and fixed function keys, every telephone is equipped with one or several call
keys for making internal or external telephone calls. Further keys to facilitate telephoning are the
DESTINATION keys and the DIRECT CALL keys which can be programmed with customized numbers, and
also the FUNCTION keys which can be programmed with facilities offered by the service menu.
At single workplaces
, the individual call keys (INTERNAL/EXTERNAL) are available for making internal or
external calls. Here, you can make calls using the number assigned to your telephone and reach other
subscribers by dialling their appropriate number.
At team workplaces
, INTERNAL and EXTERNAL keys are assigned to several telephones. This means that
each team member has access to the call keys of the other team members and can thus use other members’
lines/numbers or pick up calls for other team members.
Team telephones are accessed by simply pressing the TEAM or PARTNER keys.
Different team groups can be configured depending on the team’s function. The different kinds of team are
explained in the appendix to this manual.
Our service department will tell you which features are installed on your telephone. The following pages
provide an overview of the various key functions for each team variant. Get to know the versatile facilities of
your telephone. In this way you will learn about a lot of new functions and, in the course of time, come to
appreciate the advantages they provide.
Installing the
telephone and

Displays
Text displayThe user interface display panel at the top of the telephone always displays its current status (e.g. dialling
internally), the type of procedure currently called up, as well as the time and date. Enabled or active
facilities are shown as a symbol or in text form. If several facilities are activated at the same time, this is
indicated by an asterisk at the top, right-hand corner or the display. In this case, you can browse through the
display (cf. page C-6).
The following symbols may appear in the display:
S for mute switch (microphone is switched off)
h for operation using headset
L for hands-free/loudspeaker operation
c for set appointment
m for an incoming message
When internal calls are received, the display will show the number, and (if set up) the name of the caller. For
an external call, the display may show ”External calls“ or the number of the caller (in ISDN connection). In
order to keep a check on charges, the cost or the duration of the call is displayed during the call (if this faci-
lity is programmed).
Flag displayHere, symbols (flags) which are allocated to the key are displayed either above or below the key,
respectively. If these keys are programmed as INTERNAL, EXTERNAL, TEAM or PARTNER keys, the symbols
indicate various functions, e.g. calls, so that you know which key to press. The following section explains
the meaning of these various symbols.

no indication The INTERNAL/EXTERNAL or MULTIPLE key is free
This symbol appears when a call with ring signalling is received on the line
to the respective call key. On the display, you see the telephone number or
the name or the line (internal/external) of the caller. To answer this call, lift the
handset.
This symbol appears for the second, third call etc. when severall calls are
received at the same time. You can answer these calls by simply pressing the
key. No additional information appears in the display. This symbol also
appears when calls are received on the MULTIPLE/PARTNER or TEAM keys, if
the call signal for this key is not activated.
This shows you the key for the line on which you are currently calling.
If you switch your telephone over to the operating mode ”Programming in the
service menu“ while you are making a call (e.g. to change the volume of the
loudspeaker), the occupied call key is marked by this symbol.
This symbol appears when you have to access MULTIPLE/PARTNER or TEAM
keys and the respective line is already occupied.
When you interrupt a call to make enquiries to another subscriber, the origi-
nal call is held; this is indicated by the symbol blinking slowly.

Notes
Telephoning
Notes
BTelephoning
Internally and
externally
configured
telephones
A default direction for telephoning can be configured for each varix SD 38 telephone.
Externally configured telephones
Your telephone is set in such a way that an EXTERNAL key line is automatically occupied when the handset
is lifted. You can start dialling the external telephone number immediately. This default direction will normally
be configured if you need to make a lot of external calls.
Internally configured telephones
By lifting the handset, you automatically occupy the line assigned to the INTERNAL key and can start
dialling an internal number immediately. This default direction will be configured by the DeTeWe service
engineer according to your requirements.
Calling with
DESTINATION
keys
You can assign internal or external telephone numbers to the freely programmable keys (cf. page D-1). Dialling
with DESTINATION keys is similar to dialling a number. This means that, for any of the operating pro-
cedures in this chapter, you can use a DESTINATION key instead of dialling a number on the keypad.
Calling with
DIRECT CALL
keys
It is possible to configure DIRECT CALL keys on your telephone (this is done by the service engineer). You
can also program DIRECT CALL keys yourself (cf. page D-2). As opposed to the DESTINATION key, the
“engaged state” of the destination or line for a DIRECT CALL key is indicated by the D symbol. Dialling
with DIRECT CALL keys is similar to dialling a number. Hence, in all procedures described in this chapter, a
DIRECT CALL key can be used instead of dialling the number.
Calling with
TEAM keys
Team keys can be configured on your telephone (by the service engineer). You can assign internal telephone
numbers to TEAM keys yourself (cf. page D-2). You can then call the programmed destination directly using
a TEAM key. Apart from this, you are given an indication when calls are made to the other number and
when the other telephone is busy.
Charges displayIf your system has a charges registration facility, the amount and
the number of units is displayed whenever a self-dialled external call
is made. The charges appear automatically in the second display line
and remain there for a short while after termination of the call so that you can make a note of them. It is also
possible to switch off the charges display or to switch over to call duration display (cf. page C-56).
Call duration
display
If you have switched your telephone over to call duration display,
(cf. page C-56), the duration of the call to an internal or external
number is shown in hours, minutes and seconds in the second display
line. The time is counted in intervals of 5 seconds. If several calls are being made, each call is counted
separately. When the call has been concluded, the duration of the last connection remains displayed for a
while as a reminder.

Mute switch Ps The MUTE key can be used to switch off the microphone in the handset temporarily so that
the opposite party cannot hear what you are saying, but without interrupting the connection.
The fact that the microphone is switched off is indicated by S in the display. To switch the
microphone on again, press the MUTE key a second time.
Repeat dialling NB The last number to be dialled is stored to memory and can be dialled again by simply
pressing the REPEAT DIALLING key. The repeat call is made on the same INTERNAL/
EXTERNAL key as the first call.
Exception: If pre-selected dialling has been programmed (cf. page C-54) and you press the
REPEAT DIALLING key before lifting the handset, the key line of the default direction,
INTERNAL or EXTERNAL, selected for your telephone is accessed.
Hands-free There are two possible ways of telephoning, either using the handset as described in this manual, or in
hands-free mode. In the latter case, you listen via the built-in loudspeaker and speak into the microphone
located at the bottom left-hand corner of your telephone.
f If you wish to use hands-free mode, then do not lift the handset, but press the HANDS-FREE/
LOUDSPEAKER key instead. L appears in the display. The call is concluded by pressing
the HANDS-FREE/LOUDSPEAKER key once more.
Pf O If you have started to use the handset and wish to continue in hands-free mode, simply press
the HANDS-FREE/LOUDSPEAKER key and hold this down while replacing the handset.
Loudspeaker In the course of a telephone conversation you can switch the loudspeaker of your telephone on at any time
so that other people in the room can listen in.
Pf To do this, simply press the HANDS-FREE/LOUDSPEAKER key.
Access
permissions
Calls on external lines (i.e. class of service) are controlled by access permissions determining how ”far“ you
are allowed to call on your particular phone. The basic access permission for each telephone is configured
by the service engineer (e.g. foreign calls, local calls). A list of permission stages is given on page C-35.
To protect your telephone from unauthorized use you can switch the permission down to “limited dialling/
restricted permission” (cf. page C-35).
Please note: The access permission applies to all external calls, irrelevant of which call key is currently
occupied.
