General Description
The RDK-12GCONV UHD Converter Reference Design demonstrates the use of
Semtech's GS12241 12G UHD-SDI Re-timing Adaptive Equalizer, GS12090 Bidirectional
12G UHD-SDI Cable Equalizer/Driver, GS12281 12G UHD-SDI Re-timing Cable Driver,
and GS12070 UHD-SDI Gearbox to enable conversion from single channel 12Gb/s SDI,
quad channel 3Gb/s SDI and other multiplexing or demultiplexing modes while
minimizing the port count in designs.
This reference design not only allows your evaluation of Semtech products, but also
accelerates your time to market because the source files for the schematic, PCB layout,
micro-controller and GUI can be provided by contacting your local FAE.
Note: This Reference Design assumes familiarization with the Semtech products found
on-board the RDK-12GCONV. For further information regarding these products, please
refer to the following documents:

1. Quick Start Guide
The RDK-12GCONV is designed to function out of the box. The following steps go
through the Initial Setup using the RDK-12GCONV board in DA Bypass mode.
Note: Unless otherwise specified, displayed LED colour within the photos do not
necessarily reflect actual LED colour for the given step.
1. Connect a video source to the dedicated input (J1).
Figure 1-1: Input (J1)
2. Connect a video monitor to the dedicated output (J5).
Figure 1-2: Output (J5)
3. Connect the 12V power supply to J11. If "red" LED is on (see Figure 1-4), the power
supply is connected backwards; power off and reverse connections.

the input J1 on your SDI monitor display through output J5 (this output will also be
duplicated on J2-J4).
Note: This mode only supports HD, 3G, 6G, or 12G data rates. SD is supported,
however mode 18 (DA SD Bypass) must be used instead of mode 17.
Note: Advanced board functionality can be accessed via USB. See Hardware Connection
Quick Start for further details.

2. Detailed Description
2.1 Operation
The UHD converter reference design has 5 BNC ports: 1 dedicated input (J1), 1 dedicated
output (J5) and three bidirectional ports (J2-J4). The bidirectional ports make the design
very flexible, minimizing the physical size of the design and reducing the BNC port
count.
The RDK-12GCONV board is powered from a 12V wall adapter (included in the kit).
This board is designed to aid users in the evaluation of Semtech 12G devices without
needing to connect to an external computer. Advanced features can be accessed
through the GUI by connecting the board via USB interface.
The UHD configuration modes can be selected using the rotary switch mounted on the
printed circuit board, or by software GUI via the USB port (J8). The selected mode can be
observed through the illuminated LEDs.
Table 2-1 illustrates the supported modes and associated LED indicators with each
mode selected.
Note: While turning the Mode selector, the output mode will be displayed as a Binary
Coded Decimal (BCD) value via the I/O Rate LEDs (see Mode Select column of Table 2-1).
When the Mode selector is not in use, the mode/rate LEDs display the selected I/O rates
(see LEDs column of Table 2-1).

4.2.3 Evaluation Board Selection
After connecting the RDK-12GCONV to the PC, the user must select the dongle using the
drop list found at the top of the interface showing “Please select a device…” as shown
in Figure 4-4 and Figure 4-5.
Figure 4-4: Dongle Selection Drop List
Figure 4-5: Select RDK-12GCONV from the List
4.2.4 Refresh
The Refresh button, located in the bottom right-hand corner of the GUI, updates all of
the controls in the GUI with their respective values from the device. The GUI can
automatically perform this task every second if the Auto box is checked.
4.2.5 Menu Bar
File
The File menu allows users to load and save GS12070 Gearbox configurations. This is
particularly useful if the GS12070 has been optimized for a specific application.
The Configuration file is an XML file (*.xml) that lists register addresses along with their
corresponding value in hexadecimal format. Here is a sample excerpt from a
Configuration file:
<REG name="CONTROL_SLEEP" addr="0003" data="0000" />
<REG name="MISC_CTRL" addr="0004" data="0000" />
<REG name="MISC_CFG" addr="0005" data="0000" />
View
Read/write operations to the RDK are logged in the GUI. The user can view this log by
clicking the Enable Logging button in the View menu. The log can then be saved to a
text file, copied to the clipboard, cleared, or hidden.

Enables the Gearbox Pattern Generator.
Allows manual control of which pattern is generated by the GS12070.
In order to use pattern generation mode, a clock source must be provided for the
video input. For a 12G output, a 1080p60 3G input is required. For a 6G signal, a
1080p24 HD input is required.
For further information regarding Gearbox Pattern Generator, refer to GS12070
