General Description
This document provides guidance on how to use the GS12090 Evaluation Board
(EB-GS12090). It is recommended that the GS12090 Data Sheet (PDS-061188) is read
prior to reading this document in order to get familiar with the features of the GS12090.
Overview
The EB-GS12090 can be powered-up and evaluated out-of-the-box as a standalone kit
without GUI control. Connecting to a PC (using the supplied USB cable) enables
evaluation of the advanced features which are only accessible through the host
interface.
For a quick evaluation, refer to the Quick Start Guide section of this document.
For detailed descriptions of the supported evaluation features of the EBK, refer to the
GS12090 Data Sheet.
Kit Contents
The EBK-GS12090 contains the following components:

1. Shunt Configuration
There are two shunts that need to be placed on the board (if the board is not already
populated with these) before being powered.
J1– set this to 1.2V/1.8V/2.5V as desired for the evaluation
Note: If evaluating the output pre-emphasis features, it is suggested to set this to
2.5V.
J2– set to 2.5V
2. Connect to USB interface or use in stand-alone mode.
Note:
For further information on GUI installation, use, and features, see all of Section 2.
Stand-alone mode does not require a USB connection to the device. For more
information on stand-alone mode see Step 4 below.
If using GUI control and the board or microcontroller is reset, the GUI will need to
be reconnected to the Evaluation Board. See 2.2.1 Getting Started for information
on reconnecting the Evaluation Board.

3. Power
Apply a 5V power supply to the board using the TP14 and TP13 or via the barrel jack J43.
Note: Do not apply more than 5.5V. If power has been correctly applied, D1 will light. If
there is a fault, D34 will light. If D1 does not light, check the voltage and polarity of the
source.
4. Stand-Alone Mode
Stand-alone mode allows for use of the GS12090 evaluation board without connection
to a PC. The available modes using this control are outlined in Table 1-2: SW10 Mode
Selection. To use the evaluation board in this mode, please see the following steps:
1) Complete Steps 1 and 3 listed above.
2) Set SW10 to the desired mode (see Table 1-2).
3) Press SW1 (RST) on the board, or remove and reapply power to the evaluation
board.
Note: If using stand-alone mode controls while the evaluation board is connected
to the GUI, the host must complete the following:
a) Click the “Disconnect” button located at the top of the GUI.
b) Press SW1 (RST) on the board, or remove and reapply power to the evaluation
board.
c) Reconnect the GUI to the evaluation board. See 2.2.1 Getting Started for
instructions on reconnecting the evaluation board to the GUI.
5. DIP Switch Configuration
No alterations need to be made to the default DIP switch configuration for SW4 and
SW2.
SW3 can be used to switch pull-down resistors on each of the GS12090’s GPIO lines. The
pins are pulled up to 1.8V if the switch is open.
SW10 is used to change modes as described in Step 4. SW10 can also be used to
program custom modes to the on board microcontroller, see “Save to Flash” in 2.2.2
Device Settings Tab.
6. Indicators
Notes:
1. See “GPIO Control” in 2.2.2 Device Settings Tab for further information on changing GPIO functions.
2. GPIO numbers on the silkscreen are reversed on Rev.1 PCBs. Use the test point and LED numbers listed in
the above chart as they are correct.

2.2.2 Device Settings Tab
The Device Settings Tab has several items to be noted, they are as follows.
Note: The numbers found in the brackets refer to Figure 2-10 and are used to show
locations in the GUI.
•GPIO Control (3.1)
On this tab you can set each of the 4 x GPIO to an Input or an Output, and set
each of the GPIOs to the desired function via the dropdown menus.
Save to Flash (3.2)
This function allows the user to add or alter device modes that have been
selected by SW10.
To add or alter a user mode, perform the following:
Note: It is not recommended to alter modes 0000, 0001, 0010 from Table 1-2.
These are default Semtech provided modes and once altered from their default
and saved to flash, resetting or power cycling the device will not restore these
defaults. If a mode creation is desired, it is recommended to use 0011 to 1111
which are the User Configurable modes as per Table 1-2.
1. Set the mode select dip switch (SW10) to the mode number you wish to alter.
2. Configure the GS12090 to the desired settings via the GUI.
3. Click the “CSR Settings” box in the “Save to Flash” box.
4. Click “Save”.
5. Wait for a pop-up box indicating that the mode was saved.

Table 2-1: Main Tab Features
Feature (Reference) Description
Input Visualizer (4)
Displays the currently selected signal path and labels the
associated inputs and outputs.
LSC (5)
LSC (Launch Swing Compensation) is used to compensate for
non SMPTE compliant upstream sources. This only needs to be
adjusted if the upstream source is not 800mV.
Note: This control is only applicable to Cable EQ mode.
Input Select (6)
Selects the active input: Cable EQ (BNC input) or Trace EQ (SMA
input).
The Mode Button selects between CSR (immediate) for GUI
control and Pin (immediate) control.
Note: If the evaluation board is set to use pin control, the
actively selected input will be set by the assigned GPIO pin. With
default settings applied, this is GPIO3. Driving GPIO3 HIGH will
put the GS12090 into Cable Driver Mode, and driving it LOW will
put the GS12090 into Cable EQ mode.
Driver Settings (7)
Displays current output state including: disable and mute status,
re-time status, and driver swing settings.
Trace Equalizer Boost (8)
This sets the gain on the Trace Equalizer. The default value is 2.
This value will need to be adjusted based on the insertion loss
profile of the input. See the “Input Trace Equalization” section of
the GS12090 datasheet for more details on boost setting
recommendation.
Note: This control is only applicable to Cable Driver mode.

2.3.4 Eye Monitor
The GS12090 is capable of creating an eye diagram to display the input signal on both
the Cable Equalizer and Trace Equalizer Inputs.
There are two eye monitor modes to choose from that allow for different functionality.
These functions are “Shape Scan” and “Full Eye Scan”. The Shape Scan, and the Full Eye
Scan do not interrupt or interfere with the active functions of the GS12090.
The sections below will describe how to use of these functions. Further information on
each can be found in the GS12090 Data Sheet.
2.3.4.1 Shape Scan
The Shape Scan returns the 4 outer most points of the equalized input signal which can
be used to quickly and easily calculate the eye height and width of the equalized input
signal.
The speed of this scan lends extremely well to allowing applications to quickly check the
shape of the input eye and adjust their system accordingly. To demonstrate one
potential use of this feature, the GS12090 GUI has an integrated Trace EQ optimization
routine. This uses Shape Scan feature to assess the current shape of the equalized input
signal and adjusts the Trace EQ to an optimal level.
