Lamborghini Countach LP 500S
178
Despite a production run that lasted from
1974 to 1990, only 2,042 Lamborghini
Countaches were ever made, something that
added to the exclusivity of the model. In
comparison, Lamborghini’s greatest rival,
Ferrari, produced over 7,000 of its Testarossa
models in less than a decade.

When wrapped in masking tape, the
shock absorbers should resemble those
shown above.

The steps in this stage will mirror those of
Stage 30, which saw the assembly of the rst
set of rear shock absorbers. Again, start by
wrapping masking tape around the shock
absorbers’ bodies, making sure the logos and
the red strips are not covered.

absorbers
Stage 31
3
For the next step, you will need a clear gloss
lacquer spray – the same one that you used
in the previous stage. Always follow the
manufacturers directions and use the spray
in a well-ventilated area.
4
Prepare the cardboard box made into a
walled spraying area, used previously. Use
two clothes pegs to hold the shock
absorbers upright as shown, and spray a
thin layer of lacquer over them from
25-30cm away. Leave them to dry fully, then
peel away the masking tape.
Spray lightly, from a distance
of 25-30cm
In this stage, you will be applying some
clear gloss lacquer spray (sometimes
called topcoat) to the shock absorbers, as
you did for the shock absorbers in the
previous stage. It is very important to use
a clear spray, and to follow the
manufacturer’s guidelines for use.

Rear shock absorbers
Insert one of the M2.3 x 8.5mm screws saved from Stage 30
into the indicated hole.
Adjust the shock absorber so that the circled holes line up
and are unobstructed.
67
Take the rear shock absorber bracket assembly from the
previous stage and t the rst of the shock absorbers into
the indicated slot.
Push the screw through the hole so that it feeds through the
end of the shock and into the threaded hole behind.
With the tip of the screw sitting in the hole on the far side,
tighten the screw with a screwdriver, stopping when you feel
resistance. Do not overtighten the screw.
Next, insert the second rear shock absorber into the free slot
on the same end of the shock mount, as indicated above by
the red arrow.

As in Step 6, adjust the shock absorber so
that the holes line up and are unobstructed.
Insert an M2.3 x 8.5mm screw into the
indicated hole.
Push the screw through the hole so that it
feeds through the end of the shock and into
the threaded hole behind.
14
Tighten the screw, using a screwdriver and
taking care not to overtighten it.
15 16
Check that both shock absorbers can pivot
freely in their slots. If they can’t, you may
have overtightened the screws.
Make sure that the shock absorbers can
compress within their springs, by squeezing
the ends together. The springs are very sti,
so be careful not to hurt your ngers.
This stage is now complete, and both sets of
rear shock absorbers are in position at the ends
of the rear shock absorber bracket. Store your
assembly safely until next time, along with any
unused parts supplied with this stage.

section of the part with lacquer. Leave it to dry fully before
continuing with the assembly.

For the next step, you will need the same clear gloss lacquer
spray used in Stages 30 and 31. Always follow the
manufacturers directions and use in a well-ventilated area.
As you have done with the rear shock absorbers, wrap some
tape around the body of the front shock absorber supplied
with this stage, with the part positioned as shown. Do not
cover the logos and the red strip.

Stage 32
For this stage, you will again be applying
clear gloss lacquer spray to the shock
absorbers, as you have in previous stages.
It is very important to use a clear spray,
and to follow the manufacturer’s
guidelines for use.

This stage is now complete, and the rst parts
of the front suspension system are beginning
to take shape.
Push the part into place.
Store the unused parts in a plastic bag until needed. You will
be using one of the screws in the next stage, so you may nd it
easier to store them separately.
11
14
Holding the parts together, tighten the screw with the
screwdriver by about one complete turn, while ensuring that it
enters the hole in the anti-roll bar link rod correctly.
12
Now line up the anti-roll bar link rod with the exposed tip of
the screw. The circled peg and groove will locate the part in its
correct position.
Now continue to tighten the screw, being careful not to
overtighten it.

When the rst concept model of the Countach
appeared at the 1971 Geneva Car Show, it
diverted much of the attention away from the
updated Miura, Lamborghini’s intended star of
the exhibition. With its unusually steep and
angular lines, many critics saw the Countach as
merely something of a design statement, and
doubted that it would actually enter
mainstream production.

With its huge windscreen
sloping backwards so
dramatically, the inside of the
Countach was often unbearably
hot on sunny days – something
not helped by the fact that the
scissor doors’ windows could
only open halfway. The issue
wasn’t fully addressed until the
25th anniversary model, which
had a signicantly upgraded
air-conditioning system.
