Draw two lines across the foretop,
intersecting in the centre to divide it
into four quarters. Use these lines to
help you place the ribs (parts 26). Cut
the ribs from the 2 x 2mm wooden
strip and glue them onto the foretop.
When the glue has dried, sand the
edges of the ribs to match the edge of
the foretop.

Use the edge of a file to create the four
grooves in the forward crosstree.
Drill the 1mm holes at the edges of the
foretop. Sand the surface smooth and
paint it with wood stain.
Tie four double blocks (D) around the
forward crosstree, positioned in the
grooves made in the previous step.

Retrieve the stanchions (parts 27) from
Stage 140. Test-fit them in the holes
along the aft edge of the foretop (see
next step) and cut off their ends, so that
they don’t extend past the underside of
the foretop.
Glue the trees to the underside of the
foretop, as shown here and on the plan.
Glue the stanchions into position along
the aft edge of the foretop. Make sure
that all the U-shaped seats at the top of
the stanchions are aligned.

Tie a single block to the middle
stanchion, as shown.
Cut the railing (part 28) from a 1 x
3mm strip of ramin to the length
shown on the plan, and glue it into
the U-shaped seats in the top of the
stanchions.

Retrieve the 1 x 8mm strips from Stage
139. Place them on the plan, up against
the mast, and mark the lines of the
rubbing paunch and cheeks (parts 19)
onto them.
Mark the position of the rubbing
paunch and cheeks onto the foremast.
Apply glue to these areas and place the
strips into position. Because the mast is
cylindrical, you will need to press
the strips against it to achieve the
correct shape.

Sand the surface of the mast, and apply
a thin coat of clear varnish. When dry,
wrap the bindings (part 20) around the
mast using 0.5mm brown thread.
Remove the bibbs (parts 21) from the
fret from Stage 139 and sand them
smooth. Glue them to the sides of the
foremast (part 18), above the cheeks.
Insert the lower mast into the aft hole
of the foretop, and gently push the top
down until the trestletrees rest on the
bibbs. Apply glue to the contact points
to fix it in place.

Prepare two C blocks and tie them to
the top of the lower foremast, above the
guides, as illustrated on the plan.
Glue the two U-shaped guides (parts
30) from Stage 136 to the port and
starboard sides of the top of the lower
mast, as shown. You can choose to
leave them black or paint them brown.
Prepare the fore topmast (part 33)
from the 8mm dowel from Stage 139,
following the plan. Drill a 1mm hole
through the mast at the point shown
here and on the plan.

Place the topmast through the aft hole
in the topmast crosstrees (part 35) and
apply glue to secure it.
Cut lengths of 2 x 3mm wooden strip
to create the crosstrees supports (parts
34). Shape these lengths into wedges
and then glue them onto the mast,
below the squared section. Test-fit the
end of the mast into the fore topmast
cap (part 36) as shown in the inset.

Take the foremast cap (part 31) and
fix the guides to it. Stain the cap and
guides, and when dry, add the eyebolts
(A) and suspend the two double blocks
(D) from the ones shown.
Create the foremast cap guides (part
32) with the 5 x 5mm wooden strip
from Stage 139. Cut two 15mm lengths
and sand them into semi-circular
shapes, as shown. Create a groove
along the centre of both.
Place the mast cap onto the top of the
lower mast. Pass the topmast down
through the hole in the mast cap until
it rests in the corresponding hole in the
foretop. Apply glue to all of the contact
points between the masts, cap and top
to secure them.

Secure part 29 to the mast cap guide
with a little drop of glue. Pass the
end of part 29 straight down through
the hole in the trestletrees. Cross the
blocks over and pass them through
the foretop, on the outside of the
trestletrees.
Use 0.8mm thread to create parts 29,
looping them over the mast cap guide
and through the U-shaped guide (this
one should have a D block at the end).
Prepare the fore topgallant mast (part
37) from the 5mm dowel in Stage
139, following the plan. Cut lengths of
2 x 3mm wooden strip to create the
hounds (parts 38). Glue the supports
into place. Sand and varnish the mast
when finished.

Glue the fore topmast cap (part 36) to
the top of the fore topmast (33). Pass
the bottom of the fore topgallant mast
(37) down through the hole in the cap
until it rests in the crosstrees. Attach the
blocks to the cap and crosstrees, as per
the plan, and then glue all of the parts
into place.
Attach all of the rigging and blocks and
the truck (part 39) to the fore topgallant
mast, as indicated on the plan.

Shape the foremast yard (part 40) from
the 8mm dowel from Stage 140 in the
same way as the spritsail yard, following
the foremast plan. Create the yard
supports (parts 41) from the 1 x 3mm
strips that came with Stage 121. Glue
the supports to the centre of the yard.
Glue the yard slings (parts 42) and the
large and medium boom irons (parts 43
and 44) to the yard. Test-fit the irons
first to check that they can be placed
in the correct position according to
the plan. If they don’t fit, file the larger
holes slightly until they do.

Create the four stirrups (parts 45) with
0.5mm brass wire. To make one, form
a small loop in the middle of a length
of wire and twist the two ends together
(inset), leaving the ends long enough to
wrap around the yard.
Use the plan and this photo to fit all
the blocks and braces (parts 47) to the
fore yard.
Use 0.5mm thread to create the sling
(part 49) in the centre of the yard. Apply
glue to the knot to secure it in place.

Create the two studding sail booms
(parts 48) from the 3mm dowel
received with Stage 141. Shape to
match those on the plan, then sand and
varnish. Pass them through the boom
irons on either side of the yard. Cut the
gooseneck (L) from 0.5mm thread and
attach it to the middle of the yard.
Create the footropes (part 46) of the
fore yard by tying one end of some
0.8mm brown thread around the yard
at the edge of the supports. Then, pass
the other end through the two stirrups
on one side of the yard and secure it to
the end, at the point shown on the plan.
Apply glue to the knots at the ends and
cut off the excess.
Retrieve the spritsail yard (part 13)
from Stage 136 and attach all of the
eyebolts (A) and the blocks (C) to the
points indicated on the plan. Then
attach the footropes (part 15).

Retrieve the fore topmast yard (50)
from Stage 140. Place it on the
foremast plan and shape to match
the one shown. Then attach all of the
fittings and studding sail booms.
Tie the gooseneck (L) around the
centre of the yard, with the two ends
free. Pass the ends of the gooseneck
through the holes in one truck (J) and
then each end through a separate parrel
bead (I). Repeat this until there are
seven trucks and six pairs of beads, as
shown on the plan.

Place the foremast yard (40) onto the
foremast, at the point shown on the
plan. Take the gooseneck (L) and tie it
around the mast. Tie it tight enough so
that it is secured to the mast but loose
enough that it retains some movement.
Prepare the fore topgallant yard (part
54) and the fore royal yard (part 56)
and attach all the fittings, as shown on
the plan.
Tie the fore topmast yard (50), fore
topgallant yard (54) and fore royal yard
(56) to the mast, at the points shown on
the plan.

Check that the hole for the foremast
hasn’t become blocked. If it has, re-
open it with a round file.
Cut two 80mm lengths of 3mm
wooden dowel to create the boomkins.
Stain them and then tie a 4mm block
(C) to them with thread (B). Glue
the boomkins to the sides of the
knighthead and the points in contact
with the beakhead strips.
Test-fit the foremast into the hole
nearest the bow.

Test-fit and glue the maintop onto the
mainmast. Attach the two guides (71)
and the block (C).
Place the 12mm dowel on the
mainmast plan, both from Stage 143.
Shape the dowel (mainmast – part 58)
to match the one on the plan. Then
attach the rubbing paunch and cheeks
(59), the bindings (60), the cleat (61)
and the bibbs (62) to the mainmast.
Prepare the maintop parts (63, 64,
65, 66, 67, 68, 69 and a C block) and
assemble in the same way as previous
tops, following the plan as always.
