Samurai armour Set: Step by Step
Stage 13
The stand
Position the armour stand assembly from
Stage 12 in front of you. Place the large
cross support over the assembly, inserting
the central column into the hole of the cross
support and the two pegs of the side columns
into the two corresponding holes on the
underside of the support.
Slide the
central
column of the
stand up through
the hole in the
cross support,
test-t the peg
into the second
hole from the top
of the set of four,
you may need
to sand it to t.
When the peg ts
insert it into the
column to hold it
at that height.

As on the other plates, pass the
lace coming out of the top left
hole (circled below) through the
hole on the right (arrowed) in the
second row (shown left).
Assembled
parts
Compare your neck guard assembly with the one shown above. If
necessary, adjust the position of the plates.
Repeat Steps
3-4, crossing
the rest of the
laces over around
the third plate.
Cross the lace from the right hole in the top row over
the lace from the left, and into the remaining hole in the
second row. Then pull both laces through from the back.
In the same
way as in
the previous
two steps,
thread the
laces from the
second plate
through to
the third.

the outermost lace
through the top central
hole of the third plate
of the neck guard,
as shown left. Then,
thread the next lace
through the next hole
in from the middle one,
so that your assembly
looks like the one
shown on the right.

The helmet loops
Insert one of the screws into the
hole on the lip at the back of
the helmet.
Place the square part of one of the loops over the
thread of the screw.
Holding the loop and screw
in place, tighten the screw
into the hole with a screwdriver.
Repeat this process to secure
the second and third loops to the
helmet at the circled points.

Tie a ball knot at
the end of each
length of lace, cut
away the excess, and
apply PVA glue to the
knots to secure them
in place.
The tasset plates
The cuirass and tassets
Thread the lace into
the third hole on the
front side of the sixth
plate. Pull it right the
way through, passing it
from the back through
to the front, and repeat
for the entire row.
Tie a knot
at the end,
cut away any
excess lace, and
apply PVA glue
to the knot to
secure it.
Prepare another length of
lace, and then thread it along
the bottom two rows of the sixth
plate, crossing it over each time
and passing it back through the
last loop.
As detailed on page 10, work
back along the plate, crossing
over the lace. Pass the end through
to the back, atten and glue it, and
then remove the excess.
Fit the corresponding backings onto the fourth,
fth and sixth plates. Prepare a length of lace with
a sealed end, as before, for the sixth plate.
Retrieve the three
plates assembled
in Stage 11 and lace
the fourth plate
onto the other three.
Remember to check
the positions against
the other tassets and
the check sheet.
Lace the fth and sixth
plates onto the rest of
the tasset.

Assembled parts
Prepare a length of blue lace and
locate the ve holes on the side
cuirass. Thread the blue lace through
the hole that is second from the left.
Repeat the
previous
step for the
other side of
the tasset.
Pass
the lace
through the
rst tasset plate
from the back,
through the
central hole of
the top three.
Leave a gap
of 4cm from
the top of the
thread to
the top of the
rst tasset.
Cross the lace over and
thread through to the
back, then back through
to the front. Cross the lace
over itself and thread it
through to the back.
Pass the lace back up to
the cuirass and through
the hole to the left of the
one used in Step 6. Refer to
pages 23 and 24 to see how
to lace the rest of the tasset
to the cuirass.
As shown in detail on page 24,
t a length of yellow lace to
each side of the rst tasset plate and
the cuirass, and secure each end with a
ball knot.
Prepare a length of yellow lace,
as on page 13. Thread this length
down the outer holes of the tasset, as
with previous tassets, and tie a ball
knot at the end to secure.

The cuirass
Cut the length of cord in half.
Fray the cord to about 3cm from
one end. After fraying, trim the
sides so that it appears more pointed
and wrap the end in adhesive tape.
Repeat this so you have two prepared
lengths of cord.
Locate the three holes
at the top of the front
cuirass plate. Pass one
of the lengths of cord
through the wider bottom
hole, leaving about 10cm
hanging out of the front.
Pass the shaped end
from the back through
the top right hole.

Thread
the cord
back through
the left hole,
then pull
it through
the larger
bottom hole
to the front.
Loop the two ends of the cord
around, making sure that they are of
equal length, then apply adhesive to the
contact point.
Tie some thread in two
knots around both of
the loose ends of the cord, just
below the bottom loop.
Cross the
two ends
over, then pass
them through
the central
loops and down
through the
bottom loop.
Loop the two ends back around,
crossing over the centre, as shown.
Apply adhesive to the centre.
Pass the
end of
the cord through
one hole of the
toggle, then back
down through
the other. Then
adjust the toggle
position so it is
about 3.5cm from
the cuirass.
Apply adhesive to the
cords and the thread to
secure them in place, and cut o
the excess when dry.

The tasset plates
Cut the lace into
three equal lengths
(approximately 50cm) and
shape both ends of each
length into points.
Pass the six
lengths of
lace straight down
and through the
rst row of the
inner holes of the
second plate.
Fix the
three
plate backings
onto their
corresponding
tasset plates.
Thread the
three laces
through the
bottom inner holes
of the lower row.
Cross the laces over
and thread them
through to the back and
then back through to the
front, as shown.
Thread the laces from
the second plate through
the back of the third, cross
them over on the front,
thread them through to the back
and then pass them through to
the front again.
Check the positions of your
three tasset plates against
the check sheet and the previous
tassets, and adjust if necessary.
Your armour parts may become dirty or greasy through
being handled or coming into contact with glue or tape.
If wiping with a cloth
does not remove these
stains, you may nd that
a modellers polishing
compound will achieve
better results.

The cuirass
Test-t the centre and the right back
panels of the cuirass together, then
separate them and apply adhesive to the
contact points.
Fit the two parts together again and
hold in place for a couple of minutes.
Remove your hand
from one end and
use a peg to hold the
two parts together.
Repeat for the
other end.

The hinge pin
Fit the hinge into place and hold in
position for a couple of minutes.
After a couple of minutes, use two pegs
to hold the hinge in place.
Fray the end of the
cord to about 2cm
from one end. After
fraying, cut diagonally
on both sides, about 1cm
from the end. Place a small
amount of PVA glue on
your ngertip and run the
end of the cord through it,
up to 2cm from the end.
Tie a knot about 16-17cm from the glued
tip of the cord.
Remove the pegs when the glue has dried.
Test-t the hinge in place,
then apply glue to the
contact points of the hinge and
the right back panel of
the cuirass.
