Cut the lace into four lengths of 38cm, and two 27cm
lengths. Sharpen one end of each length, and seal the other.
1
It is important
to note which
side of the skirt
plate is which. With
the front side facing
up, the holes are set
in the depressed
corrugations,
touching your work
surface. The photo
shows a skirt plate
face up.
2
Along both edges there are ve
holes: two pairs and a single hole.
Thread two of the 38cm lengths of lace,
sharpened side rst, into the back side
of the rst plate, through the second
and fth holes as numbered by the
diagram below.
3
Lacing pattern Loop both ends over and through the
third and fourth holes respectively.

Front Back
At the back of the plate, thread
the lace along to the holes
directly opposite, and out to the
front. Straighten any folds that
appear in the lace.
Once through, thread the lace
back to the parallel holes on the
rst plate (the second and fth) and
pull out to the front again.
Repeat Steps 5 to
8 until you have a
run of 11 skirt plates.
When you have
reached the 11th
and nal plate, pull the lace
through to the back and cut
to leave 5mm excess. Dab
this with glue and fold over
back onto itself to secure
the parts.
Your row
of 11 skirt
plates should
look like this
from the front
(left) and the
back (below).
Repeat Steps 3 to 11 with the remaining 11 skirt
plates to produce the second row of plates.
Cross the laces over, at the front of
the plates, and into the remaining
holes of the second plate (third and
fourth). Check against the diagram
on page 159 and the photos that you
have laced the plates correctly.
Turn the plate around, so that the front is facing up. Hold a
second plate next to the rst, also front side up, so that the
pairs of holes along each edge align. Cross the lace ends over to
the second plate diagonally and into the holes, as shown by the
blue arrows in the photo. The diagram on page 159 also shows
the correct pattern of lacing.

The thigh guard
Use the awl to create the next two
rows of holes marked out in white
on the fabric. Follow the two rows
directly above the rows of plates you
tted in the previous stage.
Fit the rst row of plates face up onto the
fabric, so that the top left hole of the rst plate
is lined up with the rst hole in the fabric beneath.
This will be underneath the suede border. Insert
the rst 25cm length of lace cut in Step 1 of this
stage into the rst hole of the rst plate and pass
through the rst hole of the fabric underneath.
Loop the lace around the back and pass
back through the fabric into the next hole
in the plate.
Repeat along the length of the
row of plates as you have done
in the previous stage. At the far end,
tie a knot in the lace, dab with glue
and cut o the excess.
Repeat Steps 2 to 4 for the
second row of plates to
complete this assembly stage.

Stage 46
Your parts
You will be
assembling
the two rows of
skirt plates in
exactly the same
way as you did
for the rst set in
Stage 35, so keep
those parts close
by for reference.
Cut the yellow
lace into four
38cm lengths and
two 27cm lengths.
Sharpen one
end of each and
seal the other. Pull the sharpened ends of two 38cm
lengths of lace through the second and fth holes –
be sure to do this from the back side.
1
Loop the sharpened
ends over and into
the third and fourth holes,
respectively. Pull down across
the back side of the plate
and out of the holes directly
below (3 and 4). Straighten
any folds that appear in the
lace.
2
Turn the plate around,
so that the front is
facing up. Hold a second
plate next to the rst, also
front side up, so that the
holes along each edge align.
Cross the lace ends over to
the second plate diagonally
and into holes 2 and 5, as
shown by the blue arrows
in the photo. The diagram
on page 159 (Stage 45) also
shows the correct pattern of
lacing.
3
Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to connect a run of 11
skirt plates. At the back side of the last plate,
cut o and seal the lace, using a little glue.
4Your row of 11 plates should
look like this from the back.
5
Repeat Steps 1-5 to complete
the second of the two rows of
skirt plates. Check these against
the others that you have made in
previous stages.

Samurai armour Set: Step by Step
The thigh guard Line up the two rows of plates so that they
complete the plating of the thigh guard you
have so far assembled. Make sure that they are tting
snugly to the edges, and mark through the holes with
a ballpoint pen where the outer row overlaps the
yellow border.
Using the awl, begin perforating the
holes you marked in Step 1 and the
row of dots marked in white, as you did to
prepare the earlier plates.
12
With the 27cm length of yellow lace, attach
the rst of the rows of plates (refer to the
instructions in Stage 45, if necessary).
3
Next, lace the nal row of skirt plates to the
foundation fabric, this time threading the
lace through the yellow border.
4
To further secure the plates, use a
needle and black thread to stitch
the outside edges of the plates to the
foundation fabric. Do this in the same
way explained on page 140 (Stage 39).
5
When you reach the
bottom row, stitch across
the row of plates, crossing
the thread between holes 1
and 5, following the yellow
lace pattern as shown. Once
across, stitch the thread
back up the other side of the
plates following the same
pattern as used for the rst.
Tie o the end of the thread.
6Stitching the backing
fabric (optional)
As with the gauntlet and sleeve
borders, you may want to line the
edge of the suede border with a
blind stitch. Refer to the instructions
in Stage 33 to do this.
Stitch holes 2-3 for

Stitch both holes
2-3 and 4-5 at

Stitch these
together
Completing the
thigh guard
With the thigh guard
foundation fabric lying
back side up, apply a dab of
glue to each point circled
in the photo below. Fit the
black thigh guard backing
fabric on top so that its
edges line up with those of
the guard. Press these points
to secure the border.
1
Next, trim
around the
two narrow
lengths at either
side of the backing
fabric. Stitch
the rectangular
piece of fabric
highlighted in the
photo below, and
trim any excess.
2
Dab the
yellow
border with
glue, as shown,
then turn over
and press onto
the backing
fabric. Glue a
little at a time.
3
Cut the blue lace into
four lenghts – one
measuring 30cm and
three 10cm. Keep the
remaining lace, as you
will be using this at a
later stage.
Hold the rectangular leg plate (inner leg plate
lower) with the shiny side facing upwards. You
will see along the second row of holes that there are
three pairs of larger holes – one pair to the left, one
in the centre and one to the right. Fit both ends of
the rst 10cm lace through each of the large holes in
the pair on the left of the plate.
Repeat Step 3 with the other two
10cm lengths of lace, threading
them through the pairs of larger holes
in the centre and right side of the
plate (see circles).
Sharpen both ends of the three 10cm lengths of lace in
the same way you have done throughout the series. For
the 30cm length, sharpen only one end, and leave the other
untouched.

Hold the larger inner leg plate upper above the lower plate. Thread the sharpened end of the outermost lace through the corresponding
hole on the left edge on the bottom row of the upper plate (top left photo). Repeat with the other lengths so that all six ends are fed into
their corresponding holes on the upper plate (middle photo). All the ends of the lace should now be on the inside of the plate (right photo).
Next, thread the sharpened end of the 30cm length of lace through
the hole second from left on the top row of the lower plate. Pull the
lace through until only the unsharpened end remains at the front of the
plate, then dab this with glue to temporarily secure. Then, begin to lace the
plates together, following the pattern shown in the diagram to the right.
Pass the lace down and through to the back of the upper plate,
entering through the second hole on the free row of holes. Loop
around the back and pull back out through to the front from the
outermost hole of the same row, then pass back through the top left
hole of the lower plate. Check the photos above for guidance.
Dab the end of the lace with some glue, then pull the sharpened
end over the glued tip and through to the back, entering through
the hole directly below. Pull tight through to the back so that the
glued tip is sealed tight underneath.
Begin threading the lace
through the holes to join
both plates, following the pattern
described in the diagram above.
Work from Step 1 to 13, then
continue in the same pattern until
the last four sets of holes – from
there start with number 1 marked
in orange on the right of the
diagram.

thread through the one directly below it,
rather than to the left.
Pass behind and to the
left, then out to the
front again, where you should
feed the lace under the loop
created in Step 10. Pull tight,
dab with glue to seal, then trim
the excess.
Turn the assembly over
and knot each of the
10mm lengths of lace and
then dab each of the knots
with glue.
Trim the excess lace with scissors to complete this stage.

and one 10cm.
Sharpen both ends of the 10cm length, and just one end of the
15cm length.
Pull the end through the
corresponding hole at the bottom
of the upper shin plate, as shown. Then
repeat the process with the other end
so that the lace is joining the two metal
plates and the lace ends are at the back
of the upper shin plate.

again through the adjacent hole to the left,
which should be the outermost of the row.
Then pull it through the top left hole of the
lower shin plate so that it ends up at the
front of the plate.
Dab the unsharpened tip
again with some glue,
then pull the sharpened
end over it and into the hole
directly below, on the left
of the bottom row. Pull this
tight from the back, covering
the glued tip, then through

Use tweezers to help you pull
the lace through the narrow
gap between the plates.
Work your way from
left to right, following
the lacing pattern shown
in the diagram on page
165. When you come to
the outermost hole on
the right, feed the thread
down to the hole directly
below it, then around to
the free hole next to it at
the back (second from
the right), then out to the
front again.

Touching up the
paintwork
The metal parts of your samurai armour come pre-painted, but if
any of the paint fades or peels o after time, here’s how to touch
up the colouring. Enamel paint should be used for the larger
metal parts, while for smaller sections, such as the chainmail, a
permanent or paint marker will suce.
Feed the lace
underneath
the loop formed
in Step 8, dab the
concealed portion
with glue, and pull
tight so that the
glued section is
pressed beneath
the loop. Trim the
excess lace.
Tighten a knot
in the lace
ends tted in Step 4,
dab with glue, then
trim the excess.
9
10
For the
larger areas,
a modellers
enamel paint
is advised. Ask
in your local
hobby shop for
a suitable brand.
Use a paintbrush
to evenly apply
the paint to the
section needing to
be touched up.
The paint should
be allowed to
dry for approximately
24 hours.

Front
As you have done in previous stages, thread the sharpened end of the 30cm
lace through the hole second from left of the lower row at the top of the
outside leg plate. Dab the unsharpened tip with glue to temporarily secure it.
Refer to the diagram on page 146 for reference.
Thread the lace into
the hole directly
above it on the upper
outside leg guard (the
second from left). Then
pass around behind
to the outermost left
hole, back through to
the front, then through
the top left hole on the
lower plate.

Dab the unsharpened tip again with some
glue, then pull the sharpened end over it
and into the hole directly below, on the left of
the bottom row. Pull this tight from the back,
covering the glued tip, then work your way
across the row of holes following the pattern
explained on page 146, using tweezers to
help you pull the lace through the narrow gap
between the plates.
At the last hole on
the right, feed the
lace through the hole
directly below rather than
diagonally across, round
to the adjacent hole to the
left, then out to the front.
Pull the lace through the
loop created, dab with
glue, then pull tight to
hold the lace inside the
loop. Trim the excess lace.
Take the inside leg guard
assembly from Stage 46. Using
the 45cm length of lace prepared in
Steps 1 and 2, join this to the shin
guard assembly by feeding the lace
through the second highest pair of
holes of the shin guard (left). Enter
from the higher hole on the inside of
the shin guard’s upper plate and pull
accross to the lower hole on the front
of the inner guard.
Pull the lace so that
the sealed end stops
against the inside of the rst
hole entered. Pass the lace
through the hole above,
then cross over so that the
lace ends up at the back of
the shin guard, next to the
sealed end.
