Lay out the two thigh guards next to each other so that
there is a 1cm gap at the bottom, and a 1cm overlap at
the top of both parts.
Use the needle and black
thread to cross-stitch a
knot in the overlapping section
to hold the top of the parts
together.
Fold the ends of the waist
bands in on themselves by
5mm, then dab with glue and
press to seal.

Lay the open edges of
the waist band across the
top edge of the thigh guards,
making sure the sections on
either side of the two guards
are equal in length.
Unfold the band and use
pins to temporarily hold it
in place, a quarter of the way
in from the edge.
Using black thread, stitch the pinned
section of the band to the thigh guards
beneath. Remove the pins when done.
Turn the assembly over and apply some glue to
the top edge of the thigh guards. Fold the black band over and
press down to bond it to the
edge of the guards. Use pins again
to hold it in place.
Next, seal the gap in
the waist band at the
point it meets the edge of
the thigh guard. Do this
for both sides.

Measure the leather patch to nd the central
point, then draw a line across it on the smooth
side of the patch. Draw out four points forming a
square, with each point 7-8mm apart. Check against
the photo for guidance.
Lay the patch on a mat, then carefully use the
punch and hammer to create four holes over the
marks made in Step 1.
Dab the smooth side of the leather patch (the side
with the middle point still marked in ink) with glue,
then place onto the joint between the thigh guards. From
above, the left vertical pair of holes should be placed over
the upper thigh guard’s border.

in the leather patch.
Use a hammer if
necessary. Next, feed
the yellow cord from
the front through
the top two holes,
leaving a loop of
about 2cm at the
front of the patch.
Feed both ends back
through to the front
through the free holes.
Create two loops in the
free ends and dab in the
centre with superglue to hold
in place. The knot you will
make is the style previously
used. Detailed instructions on
this knot are found in Stage
10.

Create another loop with
each end, and seal this
with superglue.
Feed
each end
through the
loops created
in Step 4.
Push the ends back through the lower set of holes in the leather
patch. Use the awl to help you, if necessary.
Pull the ends tight, then trim close to the
fabric, and dab with glue.
Apply some glue to the
underside of the leather patch.
Fold the tip over and press down to
bond the patch to the fabric.
This completes the
assembly of the thigh
guards. The next step will
be to attach these to the
body armour, so have this
ready.

Take the blue lace. Sharpen one end and seal the
other.
Punch two holes into the aps at the sides
of the thigh guards. The holes should be
1cm apart, and 2cm from the edge of the ap.
Feed the sharpened end of the blue
lace through one of the holes from
the back and through one of the buttons.
Loop the lace over
and back through
the other hole in the
button, then into the
free hole in the ap and
through to the back.
Leave a length of about
2cm in the lace visible.
When the length is
correct, feed the
lengths back out to the
front, cross over and
pull through to the back
again. Pull this second
loop tight, then cut the
lace on the back and glue
the tips to the fabric.
Feed the lace though from the back of one of the
holes in the second ap. Loop over, and feed back
to the back through the adjacent hole.

Adjust the lace from Step 6 to loop
around the button, connecting the
aps so that they are held overlapping, as
shown in the near left photo.
Repeat Steps 2-8 for the second thigh
guard.
Pass the ends of the lace back through the holes, cross them over, pass back through
the holes, knot and secure with glue.
Create a hole at the edge of the leather
trim of the thigh guard, as shown, using
the awl.
Pass the remaining length of lace through the hole from the back so that the sealed end rests
against the fabric. Loop it around to the side of the guard and back through the hole.
Next, loop
the lace over
the top edge of
the guard, back
through the hole
to the front. Trim
the excess and
glue in place.
Repeat for the other side of the guard.

Placing the armour on its display box
Tie the thigh guards to the front of the box with the waist band. Follow
the photo for guidance.
1
Carefully rest the armour
stand on top of the box.
Locate the knot tied on the
leather patch earlier in this
stage, and tie the 80cm blue
cord through the loop above it
in a lark’s head knot, as shown.
Pull the ends of
the cord around
the armour stand,
underneath the
tassets, to the back
of the armour. Tie in
a reef knot.
Locate the thick cord attached to the cuirass in Stage 20, page 71, and take the two ends of
the cord and pass them around the front of the cuirass and through the metal loop on the
rear side plate. Take the 55cm length and pull back to the front. Take the 95cm length and pass
around the cuirass until you arrive back at the front. When the lengths meet again at the front,
tie them together in a reef knot. Make sure you tie the knot so that the two ends continue to
each side of the knot and not protrude from the top and bottom (see photos).

Stage 51
Cut the length of blue
lace into two equal
parts and set one length
aside for later use. For the
other, sharpen one end and
seal the other.
Hold the leg guard
in place on the
fabric, then push the awl
through the two holes in
the corner of the upper
plate, and into the fabric
beneath. Widen the holes
afterwards with the awl.
Pull the lace, sharpened end rst,
through the lower of the holes
from the back of the foundation fabric,
and through the corresponding hole in
the metal plate. Then pass through the
next hole up on the plate and through
to the back of the fabric.
Lay the leg guard
assembly (Stage
49) on top of the
foundation fabric so
that the largest of the
plates (the outside leg
plate upper and lower)
t snugly up against the
yellow suede border.

Do not use these holes
Repeat Steps 3-4 to punch holes in the next set of
holes at the top of the leg guard. Pass the lace behind
the fabric and along to the next hole, out to the front,
then into the next hole in the guard and back through to
the back of the fabric.
In the same way,
lace the thread
along the row of
holes until you reach
the point shown in
the photo (arrow).
Pull the lace tight, and
make sure you have
28-30cm left over.
Begin threading the lace through
the holes positioned horizontally
across the inner guard (blue circle).
Do not use the two pairs of holes
circled in the far left photo.
Continue working your way around the outline of the leg guard (arrows).
Again, do not use the highlighted holes in the photo below. When the
outline is complete, knot the lace and seal.

Attaching the leg
guard bands
Pierce from both
sides with the awl to
make the holes wider
Following the same process, thread
the lace along the horizontal row of
holes, knotting and sealing it o at the
inside of the nal hole.
Fold the open end of one of the
leg guard bands in on itself and
spread glue on the inside surface.
Squeeze the two side together and
hold in place with a peg. Repeat
for the other band. When dry, both
ends of the bands should be sealed.
Use the awl to pierce two holes on the
inner plate of the leg guard, as shown
in the photographs below and left.
Lay one of the leg guard bands horizontally
across the leg guard, then loop the blue lace
from Step 3 over the band and feed it to the back
through the lower hole. Leave enough slack on
the loop to allow the band to move slightly. Once
on the inside, glue the tip to the fabric and cut
the lace.
Feed the blue lace through the upper hole
created in Step 2, from the back. Then glue the
tip to the inside of the fabric.

Align the
height
Repeat this for the pairs
of holes in the centre and
far side of the guard, so that
the band is held in its position
across the guard (see circles).
Attach the lower leg guard
band to the guard by creating
three loops of blue lace and
attaching them through the holes
circled in Step 6, in the same way
as you did in Steps 4 and 5.
Punch two sets of holes in the foundation
fabric through the holes circled in blue.
Punch another two towards the edge of the
leather (red circle), aligning them with those
circled in blue.

Lay the backing fabric out on top of the back side of the leg guard and trim so
that it ts neatly.
Dab a little glue along the edge of the
backing fabric to hold it in place.

Assembled parts Fitting the leg guard
If you would like to
add to the look of
your leg guard, stitch
the border around
with black thread
using a blind stitch.
Stitching the
leg guard
(optional)
Apply glue around the inside edge of
the yellow border, then fold over and
press down to the backing fabric. The width
of the yellow border should be the same on
the front and back sides.
Use scissors to trim any sections of the
border that are wider than the rest.
You need to create a tube
around which to t the leg
guard. The inner tube from toilet
roll is ideal, but any similarly
proportioned item can be used.
Wrap in black tissue paper.
Place the tube inside
the leg guard. Wrap
the upper leg guard band
around to the back, then
back round and tie at the
front.
Wrap the lower band around and tie o.
Pull the free ends of the bands to either
side and conceal them at the back.

Next, thread the sharpened end of the 30cm length of lace through the hole second
from left on the top row of the lower plate. Pull the lace through until only the
unsharpened end remains at the front of the plate, then dab this with glue to temporarily
secure. Then, begin to lace the plates together, following the pattern shown in the
diagram to the right.
Pass the lace through to the back of the
upper plate, entering through the second
hole on the free row of holes. Loop around
the back and pull back out through to the
front from the outermost hole of the same
row, then pass back through the top left
hole of the lower plate. Check the photos for
guidance.
Carry on threading the lace diagonally
through the holes to join both plates,
following the pattern described in the
diagram above. Work from Step 1 to 13,
then continue in the same pattern until
the last four sets of holes – from there
start with number 1 marked in orange on
the right of the diagram.
Pass the lace
down to the
hole below and
pull tight so that
the glued tip is
pressed against
the metal. Then
feed through to the
adjacent hole and
back to the front.
At the last hole, pull the lace
through beneath the loop created
between Steps 7 and 8 on the
diagram (written in orange).
On the reverse,
tie and glue the
three 10cm lengths’
ends. Make sure the
gap between the
plates is the same as
you made for the rst
leg guard in Stage 46.
Dab with glue,
then pull the
lace tight so that the
loop seals the glued
section in place. Trim
the excess so the tip
is concealed.

feeding either end through the
central pair of larger holes, from
front to back.
Pull the lace over the glued end of the
lace and into the hole below it. Dab
again with a little glue, then pull the lace
tight to hold in place. Then, begin to work
your way across the plates from left to
right, following the same lacing pattern
described in the diagram on page 187.
Thread the 15cm lace
though the second hole
from the left on the top row
of holes on the lower plate.
Dab the end with glue and
press to the metal to hold it
– do not obscure any holes.

to the adjacent hole
nearer the outside of the
plate and back out to the
front.
