Use the needle-nose pliers to
remove the wire from the side and
back of the chain, as shown. Then push
toothpicks through rings at intervals
and into the backing board to help
hold the chain in place (see photo
directly below). Make sure the chain is
sitting directly aligned with the plan
printed on the board.
You will see that there
are sections of chain
plan printed in red on the
backing board. Making
sure the chain is aligned
with the plan, mark out
the corresponding rings of
the chain that are printed
in red with your correction
pen. These sections are to
be removed in the coming
steps. Once done, remove
the toothpicks.

The gauntlet
Link to connect
Remember to remove these links.
Use the pliers to carefully remove the links marked
with the correction pen, by gently opening the thinner,
wider links joining the thicker, smaller links one at a time,
and unhooking them from the chain. Make sure you only
open the thinner and wider links and never the thicker and
smaller ones, and not to remove or twist any unmarked
links. Important: keep the removed links together in
sections (see photo below, right), as you will be using these
in later stages.
Once all the marked sections have been
removed, join the rings shown in the photo on
a diagonal, again using the needle-nose pliers. Once
done, remove the chain from the backing board.
Begin connecting the chain to the
gauntlet crown plate, supplied with
Stage 27, by opening the top right link and
feeding it into the second hole from the
corner on the straight side of the upper
wrist plate. Use the photos for guidance.
At the other end of the chain, begin
attaching the six lower wrist plates you
assembled in Stage 28. Attach the largest
(sixth) wrist plate at its wider end to the links at
the bottom right corner of the chain, using the
same method of opening and closing the links
with needle-nose pliers. Make sure you apply
the spacing of the links
to be used correctly,
following the photos
for this step and
Step 4 closely for
guidance.
Connect each link in the same way
until the entire top side of the chain is
attached. Again, leave the very farthest hole
to the left of the plate.
Remove each of the
larger corner links from
the chain. Make sure not to
twist any of the other links.
In this manner, remove all of the
marked links. Look at the photo
for guidance.

The tasset
Attach the rest of the wrist plates,
making absolutely sure to follow the
spacing shown in the photographs.
4
Fix the backings
to their respective
tasset plates. Prepare
the lace as you have
done before, with one
shaped end and one
sealed end for the
sixth plate.
1
Thread the lace all the way through the
third hole on the front side of the sixth
plate.
2
Pass the lace from the back
through to the front, then
through to the back again, and
repeat for the entire row. Tie a
knot at the end, cut away any
excess lace, and apply PVA glue
to the knot to secure it.
3Prepare the length of lace again, and thread it
through the bottom hole of the third column
of the sixth plate.
4
Cross over to the fourth hole of the middle
row and thread back through. Complete the
lacing along the two bottom rows of the sixth
plate, as detailed on page 10 (Stage 3).

Attaching the tasset Retrieve the
three plates
assembled in Stage
27, and lace the
fourth plate onto
the other three.
Remember to
check the positions
against the other
tassets and the
check sheet.
1
Fit the fth and sixth plates onto the
rest of the tasset.
2
Pass the lengths of lace through to
the back of the sixth plate and tie a
ball knot at the end of each length. Cut
away the excess, and apply PVA glue to
the knots to secure them in place.
Thread the yellow lace through the outer holes of the
tasset as you have done in previous stages, tying a knot
once complete. Prepare the remaining blue and yellow lace
by sealing one end and sharpening the other, ready for the
next step.
Spread the cuirass plates out and
thread the blue lace through the
second-most outer hole on the right side
of the underarm plate, from the back. Tie a
knot in the lace on the inside of the plate.
Attach the rst
tasset plate as
you have done in
previous stages,
crossing the lace over
through the four
holes to get the lace
back up to the cuirass
plate. Once in, thread
the lace around to
the next hole along
in the cuirass and out
to the front again.
Repeat with the second and
third sets of holes until the tasset
is attached in three places. Adjust
the length of the laces, so that the
tasset hangs at the same distance as
the others you have previously tted,
then tie a knot at the back and dab
with glue to seal. As you did with the
other tassets, nish this assembly by
lining the blue laces with two lengths
of yellow lace, following the same
procedure used in earlier stages.

Stage 30
Fit the backs to
their respective
tasset plates as you
have done in previous
stages. Then cut the
blue lace at around
150cm, and with the
remaining length,
seal one end and
sharpen the other.
1
Thread one length of the lace all
the way through the third hole on
the front side of the sixth plate.
2
Pass the lace from the back
through to the front, then
through to the back again,
and repeat for the entire row.
Tie a knot at the end, cut away
any excess lace, and apply PVA
glue to the knot to secure it.
3Prepare the length of lace
again, and thread it through
the bottom hole of the third
column of the sixth plate.
4
Cross over to the fourth hole of
the middle row and thread back
through. Complete the lacing along the
two bottom rows of the sixth plate, as
detailed on page 10 (Stage 3).

The tasset
Cut the 150cm lace from Step 1
into three equal 50cm lengths, and
sharpen both ends of each. Thread the
laces through the lower holes in the rst
tasset plate, from the back and leaving
the outermost holes.
1
Pass the lace furthest on
the right straight down,
under the second plate and
up through the corresponding
hole in the top row, cross
over to the adjacent hole,
through to the back and then
back through to the front.
Then pass the remaining
lengths of lace through the
corresponding holes in the
same way. Remember to
check the plates against the
tasset check sheet. The laces
should end up at the front of
the second plate.
Add the third tasset plate, following the
same pattern of lacing, and again checking
against the tasset check list that you have done
this correctly. As before, the laces should end
up at the front of the third tasset plate.
Repeat Steps 2 and
3 for the remaining
tasset plates, until
you have all six plates
connected in order.
As with all the previous
tassets you have
assembled, make sure to
refer to the tasset check
sheet and previously
completed tassets for
consistency.
Complete the tasset by
lining the edges with the
yellow lace as you have done
for previous stages, but as
this tasset will have a toggle
attached at the top left, rather
than a direct tie to the cuirass,
run the yellow lace shown on the
left side all the way to the top
hole, knotting it o at the back.
When the lace
reaches the back
of the sixth plate,
tie a ball knot at the
end of each length.
Cut away the excess,
and apply PVA
glue to the knots
to secure them in
place, dabbing away
any excess glue with
cotton buds.

The tasset and cuirass
Assembled parts
Tie a knot at the end
of the remaining blue
lace, and thread through
the lower middle hole on
the left of the rst tasset
plate from behind, then
cross diagonally up to
the upper right hole and
thread through. Once out
the other side, thread the
lace through one of the
holes in the toggle.
Loop the lace over and thread it back
through the other hole in the toggle.
Adjust the lace to about 2cm, then thread
the free end into the top middle hole on the
tasset plate from the back, crossing over then
out to the back through the lower right hole.
Tie a knot in the back, dabbing with glue,
then trim.
Spread out the cuirass to give you easier
access to the plates. With a knot tied at
the end of the blue lace, pull through from the
inside of the second-from-last free hole in the
cuirass back plate, as shown. Thread through
one side of the fastener, then round and back
through the other to form a loop. Finally, t
the free end of the lace into the remaining
hole in the cuirass back plate, attach the
toggle from the tasset plate to achieve the
correct length, then knot at the back of the
plate. Dab the knot with glue.
Adjust the length of
the lace to match the
adjacent tassets, then
once you have crossed
the lace over in the usual
pattern, tie a knot at the
end and dab with glue.
To complete
this stage,
seal the end of
some yellow
lace, and thread
through the back
of the hole already
containing yellow
lace (circled). Pull
through and thread
into the last two
free holes on the
tasset, knotting
and gluing on the
back to secure the
length.
Seal one end of the
lace, and begin to
attach the tasset as you
have done for the previous
ones, beginning from the
inside of the underarm
plate, as shown. Make sure
you initially thread the
lace through the free hole
on the cuirass, closest to
the yellow lace. Follow the
photos for guidance.

Assembling the gauntlet Retrieve a group
of the links you
removed and kept from
Stage 29. Then, using
the same technique
from that stage, separate
a section of the links
consisting of three thick
links and eight wider
and thinner links. Check
against the photos to
make sure you have the
correct number of links
in your section. This will
be used to connect the
thumb and hand plates,
as shown by the circles
(right).
With the help of needle-nose pliers, open and
t the three thinner links through into the
corresponding three holes in middle of the shorter
straight side of the thumb plate, as shown. Close
the links to seal the chain.
In the same way, attach the chain to the
side of the hand plate, as shown. Make
sure to space the chain correctly.

Third
First two
Again, using the needle-nose pliers, connect the bottom two thick
links, on a diagonal with the thinner links as shown.
Lay out the hand and thumb plates next to the arm and
wrist pieces you assembled in Stage 29. The chain will
connect these two parts, with the longer side of the chain
(12 links) attaching to the six wrist plates, and the shorter
side (10 links) to the hand and thumb plates.
Begin tting the thinner links of the
chain to the back of the hand and
thumb plates. Start with the thumb plate,
attaching the rst two links to the thumb,
and the third to the chain between the
thumb and hand plates.

The gauntlet sleeve
Lay out the front of the sleeve
on your work surface and lay the
assembled gauntlet on top of it, as
shown in the photographs.
Adjust the sleeve so that it is perfectly aligned with the edge of the
gauntlet crown plate (circled) – the fabric should be visible through the
holes in the plate. Hold in place with a clothes peg, then begin to sew the
yellow suede border to the plate, threading the needle through the suede,
the hole in the crown plate and the fabric of the sleeve. Use the black thread
for this.
Continue to sew the yellow suede around
the wrist plate, making sure that the thread
passes through the edge of the suede, each
hole in the plate and the edge of the fabric
beneath. Once all the stitches are in place, you
can remove the clothes peg.

Stage 32
113
Samurai armour Set: Step by Step
Sew the whole way around the plate and once
the metal has ended, continue stitching the
yellow strip directly to the black fabric.
Cut o any excess suede from the strip you were
sewing to complete the top side of the sleeve.
In the same way as you did in Step 2, prepare the other end of the gauntlet for sewing by lining up
the thumb plate to the edge of the fabric and securing with a clothes peg. Begin to sew the yellow
suede strip around the thumb plate using black thread.
Sew around the thumb plate, making sure the thread
is pulled through the strip, plate and fabric. Be
especially careful here, as the sharp curve of the thumb
will cause the suede to bunch.
Once the thumb plate is in position, repeat
Steps 7 and 8 for the larger hand plate. If
required, trim the fabric a little with scissors
before tting the clothes peg to avoid any
creases forming in the fabric.
When the yellow strip
you have been sewing
overlaps the strip already
sewn onto the side of the
sleeve, pass the needle and
thread through both to
connect the two parts and
tie o.

The chain
Once you have stitched
around the hand section
of the gauntlet, overlap the
strips and knot the thread on the
back. Trim any excess suede to
complete this stage of assembly.
10
Lay the gauntlet out at, and spread
the chain evenly across it. Making sure
none of the links are overlapping each
other, hold in place at the edges using
strips of masking tape.
Use a craft knife to cut
a 3 x 3cm square in the
centre of a sheet of cardboard
– the cardboard used for
the packaging of the parts
supplied with this pack is
suitable.
Begin to stitch the chain to the
sleeve fabric, using the thread
supplied with Stage 21. To do this,
place the chain and sleeve on the
cardboard from Step 2, and use the
hole you cut to insert the needle
(bottom photo) for each stitch. Begin
at the top right green arrow on the
left photo, and loop through each of
the red highlighted links, following
the order shown by the arrows.
Continue stitching the chain to the sleeve until your
assembly looks like the above photo (right). Then tie a
knot in the end of the thread to complete this stage. Store the
assembly away safely until next time.
