Packing List
The FNW-9802-T is a Bus Master Type 32-bit Fast Ethernet Adapter
designed for IBM PC compatibles and NEC PC-98NX series PCs with a
PCI bus slot. The Fast Ethernet adapter complies with IEEE 802.3 10Base-
T/ 802.3 u 100BASE-TX standards and PCI Rev. 2.2 specifications. The
adapter is equipped with Auto-Negotiation function, and can automatically
detect the appropriate communication rate (10Mbps/100Mbps) and duplex
mode (half/full-duplex) whenever it is connected to a hub with Auto-
Negotiation support.
The FNW-9802-T adapter uses the latest Centaur-p chipset from ADMtek as
its controller to support flow control in full-duplex operation (IEEE 802.3x).
When attached to a switching hub with IEEE802.3x flow control (Ex. FX-
08W), the on-board chipset utilizes the flow control scheme to perform flow
control in full duplex that in turn prevents packet losses.
The Fast Ethernet adapter also supports Wakeup On LAN (Magic Packet).
Once the network adapter is installed on a computer with WOL support, the
power management of the computer can be done through LAN.
As a PCI BUS adapter product, the FNW-9802-T network adapter supports
Plug & Play. All the resources for the adapter including I/O Base addresses
and IRQ's are automatically assigned at system startup.

1-2 Wakeup On LAN
The Wakeup On LAN function allows computers to be turned on via
network, and system administrators may benefit from this feature to a great
extent. For instance, the system administrator is no longer required to visit a
remote site and install an application to all of the computers there; after all
the users have left, he/she can simply power on the computers remotely via
a network and do the job to each PC, all from the comfort of his/her own
chair.
Wakeup On LAN is activated as the target PC receives a special packet
called Magic Packet from the system administrator's computer. The target
PC starts up automatically.
To enable Wakeup On LAN, you will need a computer with Wakeup On
LAN support and a software package for transmitting Wakeup On LAN
packets (ex. Intel LAN Desk Client Manager and others) besides the FNW-
9802-T Ethernet Adapter itself.
Please refer to the user's manual of each software package for procedures to
enable Wakeup On LAN.

About Wakeup On LAN
This chapter describes how to install the FNW-9802-T into a computer and
how to connect a network cable to the Ethernet adapter.
Note :
To avoid damaging the FNW-9802-T with static electricity, touch the metal
chassis of your computer before proceeding with the installation. After
discharging the static electricity on your body, always make sure to hold the
edge of the board and avoid touching the parts on the board or the gold
colored edge connector.
1. Shut down the computer, and unplug its power cord.
2. Remove the computer's chassis cover. Read the computer's manual for
the procedure.
3. Remove the cover of an unused PCI extension slot.
Note :
The FNW-9802-T works only in bus master slots. See the computer's
manual to find a slot that supports bus master.
4. Insert the FNW-9802-T into a PCI extension slot.
5. Fix the adapter into the slot using the screws which held the slot's cover.
6. If you wish to enable the WOL feature of the adapter, connect the FNW-
9802-T adapter to the motherboard using the supplied WOL cable.
Attach each end of the WOL cable to the WOL connector on the adapter
and the motherboard.
7. Put the chassis cover back on the computer.
8
FNW-9802-T
The FNW-9802-T Fast Ethernet Adapter has a RJ-45 STP port to connect to
a 100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet or 10BASE-T Ethernet network. Please see
the following sections for more information.
Connecting to a 100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet network
To connect the FNW-9802-T Adapter to a 100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet
network, a Category 5 UTP cable (e.g. PLANEX UTP-xx-05, UTP-xx-DT)
with an RJ-45 connector at each end is required. The maximum cable
length is 100m. Follow the procedure below to connect to your network.
1. Plug one end of the cable into the RJ-45 port of the Adapter.
2. Plug the other end into a 100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet hub.
Connecting to a 10BASE-T Ethernet network
To connect the FNW-9802-T Adapter to a 10BASE-T Ethernet network, a
Category 3 or 5 UTP cable (e.g. PLANEX UTP-xx-05) with an RJ-45
connector at each end is required. The maximum cable length is 100m.
Follow this procedure to connect to your network.
1. Plug one end of the cable into the RJ-45 port of the Adapter.
2. Plug the other end into a 10BASE-T Ethernet hub.

FNW-9802-T
To ensure 100Mbps network operation, Category 5 UTP cabling is
required.
For 10Mbps network operation, use Category 3 or higher UTP cable.
To connect the Adapter to a hub, the cable must be "straight" type UTP
cable (e.g. PLANEX UTP-xx-05 and UTP-xx-DT).
To connect two computers directly without using a hub, use a "crossover"
cable (e.g. PLANEX UTP-xx-05CR).
