FW-100TA
Chapter 1
Introduction
The FW- 1 0 0 TA is a single-chip PCI Bus 100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet
Adapter designed for IBM PC compatibles with a PCI bus slot. The Fast
Ethernet adapter complies with IEEE 802.3 10Base-T/ 802.3u 100Base-TX
standards and PCI Rev. 2.1, 2.2 specifications. The adapter is equipped with
Auto-Negotiation function, and can automatically detect the appropriate
communication rate (10Mbps/100Mbps) and duplex mode (half/full-duplex)
whenever it is connected to a hub with Auto-Negotiation support.
The FW-100TA supports flow control in full duplex (IEEE802.3x), a feature
unavailable in traditional ordinary NICs.
When combined with a switching hub with IEEE802.3x Flow Control
support, the FW- 1 0 0 TA performs flow control in full duplex to prevent
packet losses.
As a PCI bus adapter, the FW-100TA is jumper less. All resources including
I/O base addresses and IRQ are automatically assigned at system startup.
Single-chip PCI Bus 100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet Adapter
Fully Comply with IEEE 802.3u and IEEE 802.3 standards
Full-Duplex available in both modes for up to 200Mbps throughput
Optimal line-speed set automatically via Auto-Negotiation function
Shielded RJ-45 connector provides unified 100BASE-TX and 10BASE-T
network media interface.

4. 100BASE-TX and 10BASE-T
If users have an existing 10BASE-T LAN, it is likely they will easily be
able to upgrade to 100BASE-TX. However, there are some important
differences between the two types of networks.
5. Cable Type
100BASE-TX only supports Cat.5 TP cable.
10BASE-T supports Cat.3, 4, or 5 TP cable.
Whenever installing new cable, use Cat.5 TP cable.
6. Repeater Hubs (only):
(1)100BASE-TX
Two types of 100BASE-TX Repeater Hubs exist: Class I and Class II
Class I Hubs cannot be attached to any other Repeater Hub.
Class II Hubs can be connected with one other Class II Repeater Hub.
(2)10BASE-T
10BASE-T Repeaters are not classified.
Four Repeaters are allowed on a collision domain.
(3)100BASE-TX Link Distance Limits:
Strict limits are placed on the length of cable allowed between devices.
Workstation to Hub = 100m max.
Class-II Hub to Class-II Hub=5m max.(when workstations are 100m
from Hubs)
Network Diameter = 205m max. (while using two Class II Hubs)

2. RJ-45 Port
This single port Fast Ethernet Adapter is capable of handling both
100BASE-TX and 10BASE-T network data. One RJ-45 female socket is
provided for twisted pair cable attachment. The socket has been shielded for
improved EMI protection.

The proper installation of these Fast Ethernet Adapters can be divided into
three phases:
SYSTEM: Putting the Adapter into a computer.
CABLE: Connecting the Adapter to the network.
SOFTWARE: Installing and configuring the NOS driver.
Disconnect the computer s power supply.
Open the computer.
Remove the protective bracket from any available PCI-Bus
Expansion Slot.
Save the screws!
Remove the Adapter from the bag.
With the Adapter s bracket facing out, insert the Adapter into the
PCI- Bus slot.
Press firmly, but do not bend the pins!
Secure the Adapter bracket with the screws.
Replace the computer s cover.
Plug one end of a TP cable into the Adapter s RJ-45 socket.
Plug the other end of the cable into any 100BASE-TX or 10BASE-T
Hub port.
See 100BASE-TX and 10BASE-T section for details on cable type and
length.

This chapter describes how to install the FW- 1 0 0 TA into a computer and
how to connect a network cable to the Ethernet adapter.Since the adapter is
a PCI bus device, there is no need to manually configure the device.
The computer automatically assigns appropriate I/O base addresses and IRQ
at system startup.
