Installation Procedure
Hazardous voltage. Solidly ground all equipment. Failure to comply can result in death, severe
personal injury, and equipment damage.
This equipment is not intended to protect human life. Follow all locally approved procedures and
safety practices when installing or operating this equipment. Failure to comply can result in death,
severe personal injury and equipment damage.
Check-out procedure
1. Check data plate. Make sure that ratings on the data plate are correct for the planned installation.
2. Visually inspect the switch. Visually inspect the switch for any damage to bushing sheds, terminals,
mounting bracket, or trip handle.
3. Install the switch. Follow locally approved installation procedures.
4. Install system components. This equipment is not intended as a visual break disconnect. Air-breaking
isolating switches, usually fused cutouts, must be installed to provide a visible disconnect.
5. Adjust orientation. When mounting the switch in its final location, the orientation of the side terminal
can be adjusted for best wire routing. This is done by rotating the body of the switch in the mounting
clamp ring. To make this adjustment, loosen the two (2) nuts on the clamp ring until the body of
the switch is free to rotate. Rotate the switch body to the desired orientation. Tighten the two (2)
nuts to 15ft-lbs to secure the switch and prevent additional rotation. The switch body can be rotated
approximately 275 degrees as shown below.
CAUTION
When adjusting the rotation position of the switch, do not locate the mounting bracket under the
manual handle/indicator as this will prevent proper operation of the switch.

High-Voltage Connections
1. Ground the switch. Make the ground connection to the ground connector located on the mounting
bracket of the switch.
2. Make line connections. Connect the primary leads to the switch terminals. The universal clamp-type
terminals accommodate AWG No. 8 solid through 2/0 stranded conductor. Animal guards for terminal
connections are provided with each switch.
3. Torque specification to terminals is 15 ft-lbs.
CAUTION
When connecting system line voltage to the UltraVacLT

Control Wiring
Electrical connections to the actuating mechanism are made through the receptacle in the bottom cover
plate of the switch. Mating plugs or cable assemblies for the receptacle must be ordered separately.
Pin orientation diagrams for the control receptacle are shown next to each available wiring configuration
on the next pages.
Remote Control
Remote control of the UltraVacLT
®
Vacuum Capacitor Switch is accomplished by connecting the
customer's control device to the receptacle in the bottom cover plate of the switch. The control signal
must be applied between the CLOSE or OPEN pin and Neutral for at least 100 msec. It is recommended
the control signal be applied for 1 second +/- 100ms. Limit switches inside the switch will open the
control path to the solenoid at the correct time.
The CLOSE or OPEN signal must be removed from the corresponding path before the opposite
signal is applied or damage to the solenoid circuit will occur. Any manual switch, relay contact, time
switch, or similar device can be used, provided the control circuit is energized for a minimum of 100
ms for each operation.
The UltraVacLT
®
Vacuum Capacitor Switch is designed for use on distribution capacitor banks which
typically operate a few times a day. To provide optimum operating performance, the mechanism of
this switch is designed for intermittent duty operation. If performing functional testing of the switch;
either on a bench or in a complete capacitor bank system; repetitive CLOSE and OPEN operations
must be limited to a maximum of 20 operations in a 5 minute time period with the operations spaced
an equal time apart. After these test operations, the switch must be allowed to rest without further
electrical operations for a period of approximately 20 minutes. This will allow the components inside
the switch sufficient time to cool and be ready for additional testing operations if desired.
If the UltraVacLT
®
Vacuum Capacitor Switch is used to switch distribution capacitors, a minimum 5
minute delay must be provided between any open operation and the subsequent close operation to
prevent damage to equipment or injury to personnel.

Switch Operation
Electrical Operation
The switch may be opened and closed electrically by applying rated control voltage to the proper
terminals of the actuator receptacle. Refer to the Installation Procedure section of this manual for electrical
connections and operating time.
CAUTION
UltraVacLT
®
Vacuum Capacitor Switches operating on 120 VAC or 125 VDC require 9 amps of current
per switch; 27 amps for a group of 3 switches. Switches operating on 240 VAC require 4.5 amps per
switch; 13.5 amps for a group of 3 switches. The voltage source must be of sufficient volt-ampere
rating to provide these currents for the 100 millisecond time period that operating current is being
consumed. Insufficient source capacity may result in malfunction of the switches and possible
damage to the internal circuitry.
Manual Hotstick Operation
Hazardous voltage. This device is not a substitute for a visible disconnect. Follow all locally
approved safety practices. Failure to follow proper safety practices can result in contact with high
voltage, which will cause death or severe personal injury.
The switch may be manually opened or closed by using a hotstick to operate the yellow manual operating
handle under the sleet hood as shown in figures below.
Hazardous voltage. Do not rely on the open position of the yellow operating handle; it does not
ensure that the line has been de-energized. Always establish a visible disconnect. Failure to follow
proper safety practices can result in contact with high voltage, which will cause death or severe
personal injury.
To open the switch contacts, insert the hotstick tip into the hotstick hole of the manual operating handle
and pull downward to the OPEN position.
To close the switch contacts, place the hotstick tip into the notch under the hotstick hole of the manual
operating handle and push upward to the CLOSED position.

Service Information
Service Requirements
The mechanical durability of the UltraVacLT
®
Vacuum Capacitor Switch was demonstrated by completing
a minimum of 50,000 mechanical operations. The switch requires no routine maintenance; however, the
switch should be inspected on a regular basis to check for physical damage and to verify operation. The
bottom cover of the unit should not be removed as there are no user serviceable parts inside.
Frequency of Inspection
Because these switches are applied under widely varying operation and climatic conditions, maintenance
intervals are best determined by the user based upon actual operating experience.
Hazardous voltage. If, during the inspection of the UltraVacLT
®
Vacuum Capacitor Switch, a dielectric
test is to be conducted, caution must be taken to insure appropriate clearances and/or guarding are
incorporated to protect personnel conducting the tests. Recommended field dielectric test levels are
75% of the rated power frequency withstand level.
Radiation. At voltages up to the specified test voltages, the radiation emitted by the vacuum interrupter
is negligible. However, above these voltages, radiation injurious to personnel can be emitted.
Contact Position Indication
The yellow operating handle is also used as a contact position indicator. The switch is closed when the
operating handle is in the up position and is open when the operating handle is in the down position.
