equipped with a polarized alternating-current line
plug (a plug having one blade wider than the other).
This plug will t into the power outlet only one way.
This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the
plug fully into the outlet, try reversing the plug. If the
plug should still fail to t, contact your electrician to
replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety
purpose of the polarized plug.
Alternate Warnings–This product is equipped with
a three-wire grounding-type plug, a plug having a
third (grounding) pin. This plug will only t into a
grounding-type power outlet. This is a safety feature.
If you are unable to insert the plug into the outlet,
contact your electrician to replace your obsolete
outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the
grounding-type plug.
16. Ventilation–Slots and openings in the cabinet
are provided for ventilation and to ensure reliable
operation of the product and to protect it from
overheating, and these openings must not be
blocked or covered. The openings should never be
blocked by placing the product on a bed, sofa, rug,
or other similar surface. This product should not be
placed in a built-in installation such as a bookcase
or rack unless proper ventilation is provided or the
manufacturer’s instructions have been adhered to.
17. The MAINS plug or an appliance coupler is used as the
disconnect device, the disconnect device shall remain
readily operable.

than 3/8" (10mm) in diameter. It is the installer’s
responsibility to conrm each mounting site used
to support the soundbar has an adequate weight-
handling margin to support both the weight of the
soundbar and extra weight that may inadvertently be
applied as a result of a house-hold accident. Damage
that may occur to the soundbar during or after the
mounting process or any other installation activity
is NOT covered under the terms of the ZVOX Audio
limited warranty.
1. Speaker Placement
You can place the soundbar on any at, stable surface near your TV.
There are three general placement options, illustrated above:
Face Front You can place the soundbar on a at surface so it faces forward. This
placement is ideal for a shelf below, above or near the television.
Face Up You can place the soundbar facing up—often in front of the television. The
bottom of the soundbar should face the listening area. Check to ensure
the soundbar does not block the television infrared remote sensor. There
should be no shelf or at surface immediately above the soundbar in this
conguration.
Wall Mount The soundbar has two sturdy keyhole-shaped hanger mounts on the back
panel. You can hang the soundbar on two screwheads that are securely
installed in a wall or other vertical surface.
• If you have a powered subwoofer you wish to use with this soundbar, the subwoofer
connection guide is located on the last panel of this document.
• Consider the nish of the surface that will support the soundbar. It is the soundbar owner's
responsibility to insure that a surface nish that contacts the soundbar is protected,
should this be a concern of the soundbar owner. The contact area on the soundbar is
made of inert synthetic materials that typically do not react with furniture or wall nishes. But
any wall or surface nish can be altered by having any heavy object resting on it for a long
period of time. Place an appropriate barrier between any surface and the soundbar if you
are concerned about the nish of the supporting surface.
• A safe, secure installation is the soundbar owner’s responsibility.
• Use an unswitched AC outlet to provide power to the soundbar. With the soundbar's Auto
Standby feature turned on, the soundbar enters its low-power draw standby state after 20 to
30 minutes of inactivity. A soundbar uses less than 0.5 watt in Standby. Using a switched AC
outlet to cut off AC power to a soundbar system is not recommended. It delays subsequent
turn-on.
• Do not place any objects on top of a soundbar.
2. Connect Your TV's Audio Output to the Soundbar
All current TVs have an audio output. It is likely that one of the cables provided with the
soundbar can be used to connect the TV audio output to an input on the soundbar. DO NOT
disconnect any video program source connected to your TV (like a cable or satellite set top box,
DVD/Bluray or similar).

Most HDTVs have an optical digital audio output jack. Use the provided optical cable to connect
the TV’s output jack to optical input 1 on the soundbar.

Analog Audio Output
You can connect a TV set’s analog audio output to the analog audio input on the
soundbar (left and right RCA jacks) connections. The analog audio input is selected when you
see In3A on the soundbar display. The analog audio output on your TV will be a 1/8 inch stereo
minijack or a pair of RCA jacks. The two illustrations below show the appearance of these two
audio output connections.

Second Digital Input
The optical audio output of a second audio source (Bluray/DVD
player, for example) can be connected to the second optical in-
put on the soundbar. The second optical input on the soundbar
is selected when you see In2d on the soundbar display.

Coaxial Digital Audio Output
ZVOX Audio soundbars do not support direct connection of coaxial-format digital audio.
To use a coaxial digital audio output, you need either a coaxial digital audio to optical digital
audio converter OR a coaxial digital audio to stereo analog audio converter. Contact ZVOX Audio
at [email protected] to learn what sources are available for a suitable converter.
3. Connect the power supply adapter
FIRST, connect the DC plug of the power supply adapter to the DC IN jack on the back of the
soundbar. THEN connect the AC plug of the power supply adapter to an unswitched AC power
outlet.

Mute
The MUTE button on the soundbar remote control operates
in the normal manner. When MUTE is active, the display will
show a blinking -00- for 20 seconds.
Bass and Treble
The Bass control has a range of -6 to 4.
The Treble control has a range of -4 to 4.
Note: The bass output of a soundbar system is affected by
its position within a room. You may nd it sounds best with
slightly more or less bass than the neutral setting.
Surround Settings
There are three SURROUND levels:
• Surround One (“Sd 1”) has low virtual surround effect and strong
vocals. Use this setting if vocal clarity is important to you.
• Surround Two (“Sd 2”) has moderate virtual surround effect
and moderate vocals. Most people prefer this setting for most
program material.
• Surround Three (“Sd 3”) has strong virtual surround effect
and moderate vocals. Many people prefer this setting when
watching movies.
Output Leveling
Press this button to prevent large changes in volume. When
engaged, it boosts quiet dialog and lowers the output of loud
commercial breaks. It also reduces volume swings between
cable or satellite channels. This feature can be used along
with any of the three Surround settings.
AccuVoice
Press this button to toggle AccuVoice on and off. AccuVoice
increases the clarity of voices. AccuVoice (ACCU) overrides
the current Surround setting (Sd 1, Sd 2 or Sd 3). Turning
AccuVoice off returns you to the last-used Surround setting.
4a. Controlling the ZVOX Soundbar
Using Your Preferred Remote Control:
Your preferred TV remote control can control Volume,
Mute and Power on the ZVOX soundbar. See the
separate instruction sheet that describes the process
of teaching the ZVOX to respond to these commands.
The ZVOX soundbar remote will always provide a full
range of adjustments, along with your preferred remote.

The VOLUME buttons operate in the normal manner.
Power (STANDBY)
The Power button toggles the soundbar between
STANDBY and On. Note: A soundbar automatically enters
STANDBY if it is silent for longer than approximately 30
minutes. A soundbar will turn back on when it senses a
restored digital signal (Input 1 only) or an infrared power or
volume adjustment.
Input Selection:
A brief press and release of the INPUT button on the sound-
bar remote control allows you to select between the four
separate inputs on the soundbar.

4b. End Panel Controls on the Soundbar
On the viewer’s right end of the soundbar are four buttons.
A) POWER button:
This button turns the soundbar “ON” if it is in Standby. If this button is pressed briey while the
soundbar is “ON”, it will mute and unmute the soundbar. To turn off the soundbar, press and
hold down this button for about ve seconds.
B) Volume Up/Down rocker button
Adjusts volume up and down. Pressing either side of this button will “unmute” the speaker if it is
muted.
C) Input button:
A brief press and release of the INPUT button selects the next input in sequence.
5. Tonal Prole Setting
The soundbar has three selectable tonal proles that allow it to better match the acoustics of its
room position. Use the soundbar's PS menu feature to choose one of these three settings.
Face Front ........ PS16 - on a at surface, facing front.
Face Up ............ PS17 - on a at surface, facing up.
Wall Mount ....... PS18 - on a vertical surface, facing into the room.
The default setting for the soundbar is Face Front.
If your soundbar’s position is Face Up or Wall Mount, you should select PS17 or PS18 from the
PS menu.
PS Menu: You adjust the PS Menu setting by rst pressing down on two buttons on the end
panel of the soundbar: Power (
) and Volume Up (+). After about ve to seven seconds you
should see PS start ashing on the soundbar's display. The rst time you bring up the PS menu,
it should show “PS 0”.
Once you see the PS display, release the buttons. Then press and release the Volume Up button
to increase the PS number. Continue pressing and releasing the Volume Up button until you
reach the setting you want: PS16, PS17 or PS18.

6. Connecting a Powered Subwoofer to the Soundbar
The ZVOX Audio soundbar has a monaural Subwoofer Output (a single RCA jack). You can
connect this signal output to the input of a powered subwoofer for stronger and deeper
bass output than what is available from the soundbar alone. For best results, the powered
subwoofer should have both volume and low-pass adjustments. Low-pass sets the upper
frequency limit of the powered subwoofer.

Connect the Subwoofer Output on the soundbar to the powered subwoofer’s designated
monaural input.
Refer to Step 5 for a description of how to adjust the PS Menu on the Soundbar. Once the
powered subwoofer is connected to the soundbar, use the PS Menu on the soundbar to select
PS31. This stops the soundbar from playing deep bass, which can be produced by the powered
subwoofer. PS30 on the PS Menu restores deep bass output to the soundbar.
After setting the soundbar to PS31, the low-pass setting on the powered subwoofer should be set
to 85 Hz.
With the soundbar and powered subwoofer connected, the output level of the powered subwoofer
should be adjusted for best blend with the ZVOX Audio soundbar. A popular music recording with
consistent bass output is a good choice for this step.

7. Soundbar Wall Mounting Information
Dimensioned diagrams of each ZVOX Audio soundbar model can be found on
ZVOX Audio's website.
The soundbar has two keyhole mounting sites on its back panel. You can mount the
soundbar onto two screwheads using these mounting sites. A ZVOX Audio soundbar weighs
between 15 and 20 pounds. NOTE: It is the installer’s responsibility to ensure the screws are
installed into the wall or other surface securely and that the screwheads are the correct size
for the hanger mounts on the rear of the soundbar. ZVOX Audio recommends your mounting
sites be able to support at least twice the weight of the soundbar.

Your Current TV Remote Can Control Your SB400/SB500.
After following the steps outlined in this guide, your cable or satellite
remote will adjust the volume output from your soundbar system. Please
Note: If you have a DirecTV remote control, use the DirecTV remote
guide included along with this instruction sheet.
The steps involve pressing the Volume, Mute, and Power buttons of your
preferred remote control with the remote positioned close to the numeric
display of the soundbar. Once complete, the soundbar will respond to
the buttons it has learned from your preferred remote control.
To insure accuracy, the learning routine records each button’s
commands twice, then conrms a successful button learning.

for conguring your SB400/SB500 to respond to your preferred remote
control. If you cannot easily teach the SB400/SB500 to respond to your

RESET Indication.
Master Reset
A master reset restores a SB400/SB500
to the factory default behavior. It erases
any “learned” remote control response. It
sets the SURROUND mode to Surround
“2”, sets OUTPUT LEVELING and DIALOG
EMPHASIS to OFF and sets BASS and
TREBLE to no boost or cut in bass or treble
output. It sets the INPUT to Optical Input 1.
To perform the Master Reset, rst put the
SB400/SB500 in Standby mode by pressing
the POWER button on the SB400/SB500
remote control. When you see “OFF” on the
SB400/SB500 display, the unit is in Standby.
You can also put a SB500 in Standby by
pressing down on the end panel MUTE
button for about 5-7 seconds.
Once the SB400/SB500 is in Standby,
locate the INPUT button on the end panel
of the SB400/SB500. (You cannot use the
INPUT button on the remote to perform a
Master Reset.)
Press and hold down the end panel INPUT
button for about 15 to 20 seconds. When
you see the three letters “ r S t ” appear
on the display (see gure below), release the
INPUT button. The SB400/SB500 will then
show the four-digit rmware code number and
turn “ON”. The master reset is complete.
SB400/SB500 Wall Mounting
Information
The SB400/SB500 has two keyhole mounting
sites on its back panel. You can mount the
SB400/SB500 onto two screwheads using
these mounting sites. The SB400/SB500
weighs 16 pounds. NOTE: It is the installer’s
responsibility to ensure the screws are installed
into the wall or other surface securely and
that the screwheads are the correct size for
the hanger mounts on the rear of the SB400/
SB500. ZVOX Audio recommends your
mounting sites be able to support at least
twice the weight of the SB400/SB500.

The PS Menu
The SB400 and SB500 have adjustments
that could prove useful, depending on the
installation location and user preferences.
The adjustments are made through the PS
Menu feature of both soundbars.
For instance, your TV set may not have a
provision to turn off the internal speakers
or the TV may display a distracting “TV
speakers off” message. Adjustments to the
PS menu of the soundbar along with your
preferred remote control can allow your
remote control to adjust volume on the
soundbar without your TV speaker playing
or the distracting message.
These adjustments are made using the four
end panel buttons on the soundbar while
watching the numeric display. The remote
control provided with the SB400 and SB500
cannot make adjustments to the PS Menu.

Adjusting the PS Menu
To make a selection from the PS menu listing,
press and hold down both the MUTE and
VOLUME UP front panel buttons for about
3 seconds. If this is the rst time you
have used the PS menu, you will see the
characters “PS-0” start ashing. Immediately
release the two buttons when you see the
PS number ashing. Then quickly press and
release the Volume Up button while “PS” is
still ashing. This will increase PS number
setting. Pressing Volume Down will decrease
the PS number setting, down to “PS-0”.
Each time you press the Volume Up or
Volume Down button, you have an additional
six seconds to make an adjustment.
Once you arrive at your intended PS number,
just wait for the display to stop ashing the
PS number. When the ashing stops, the
adjustment is made.
While ashing, the Volume Up or Down
buttons set the PS number. After adjustment,
the setting is stored when the display turns off.

Additional SB400/SB500 adjustments affect how you turn the soundbar on and off and how it
responds to remotes.
“AS” Auto Standby:
When PS10 is selected, the
soundbar will automatically enter
a low-power draw Standby
mode after 20-30 minutes of
very low to no audio signal.
In most uses, this means the
soundbar will turn its self off
after you turn off the TV.
“noAS” no Auto Standby:
The soundbar only enters
Standby in response to a press
of the POWER button on an
soundbar remote or “learned”
remote control. Auto Standby
is “off”.
“AO” Auto On:
The soundbar turns on in
response to the POWER,
VOLUME and MUTE
commands from the
soundbar remote and from
the “learned” remote.
“noAO” no Auto On:
The soundbar turns on in
response to a soundbar remote
command, but not a “learned”
remote command. Once on,
the soundbar will respond to a
learned remote.
“OnEr” One Remote:
The soundbar responds only
to the soundbar remote control.
A “learned” remote’s control
is disabled. Chose PS12 or
PS13 to restore control by a
“learned” remote.

Most users teach the soundbar to respond
to their preferred remote control using the
soundbar built-in “learning” function. Should
this approach not work with your preferred
remote control, there is an alternate method
that can allow your preferred remote to
control the sound level heard from
the soundbar.
To use this method, your preferred remote
control needs an Aux or Audio device button
in addition to device buttons for the TV and
set top box. This method cannot be used if
your preferred remote control has only two
device buttons. (Set Top Box and TV). You will
also need the User Manual for your specic
Cable or Satellite remote control, along
with the “device brand and code” list for
your remote control. This list may be a
separate document from the remote
control User Manual.
Using the PS numbers 1 through 6, you set
the SB400/SB500 to respond to the the
remote commands of a popular manufacturer
of TV or audio systems. In most cases, you
need to choose a different brand than your
TV. Choosing a brand that is different from
your TV eliminates the chance that the TV’s
internal speakers will start playing along with
the soundbar. Sony is a good choice from the
PS menu for most TVs. Most cable or satellite
remote controls can be adjusted to control a
SB400/SB500 set to “Sony” in the PS menu.
Because most Sony TVs have an “internal
speakers off” option, you can even use the
“Sony” option in the PS menu with Sony TVs.
If your Sony TV does not let you turn off the
internal speakers, you will need to choose a
different brand from the PS menu numbers 1
through 6.
Using the SB400/SB500 remote control emulation modes
PS 1 through PS 6:
Once you have chosen a brand from the
soundbar’s PS menu, you need to adjust
the setting on your cable or satellite remote
so its Volume buttons adjust that same
brand of Aux or Audio device. There are two
adjustments you may need to make on
the cable or satellite remote.
Cable/Sat remote adjustment 1: The
volume buttons on a cable or satellite remote
are typically “locked” on to the TV’s internal
speakers. Even if you press the “Cable”
button on your remote, the volume buttons
will still send out volume commands for
your TV, not the cable box. You need to
unlock the Cable/Sat remote volume buttons
according to the cable or satellite remote
control’s instructions. Once unlocked,
pressing Aux on the Cable/Sat remote
will then cause the volume buttons on the
Cable/Sat remote to control whatever brand
of device is set on the Aux button.
Cable/Sat remote adjustment 2: The
cable/satellite remote instructions will also tell
you how to set the “AUX” or “AUDIO” button
to the brand you chose on the soundbar’s
PS menu. The instructions should list a few
numbers that let you control a device that
responds to Sony codes, for instance.
Try the different “number code” options
listed until you nd one that controls the
SB400/SB500. If you cannot nd a code
that controls the soundbar, you can set the
soundbar to one of the other four brands
available and search for a compatible code
for that brand.
Once you nd a code number that controls
the SB400/SB500, you can then “lock” the
cable or satellite remote volume buttons to
adjust only the Aux or Audio device and not
the TV. Once locked, the volume buttons will
always control the soundbar, even if a TV/
Cable/Satellite/DVD button on the Cable/
Satellite remote control is pressed.
