Electrostatic Discharge Information
A discharge of static electricity can damage static-sensitive devices or microcircuitry. Proper
packaging and grounding techniques are required to prevent damage. To prevent electrostatic
discharge (ESD) damage, observe the following precautions:
Transport products in static-safe containers such as conductive tubes, bags, or boxes.
Keep electrostatic-sensitive parts in their containers until they arrive at static-free stations.
Cover workstations with approved static-dissipating material. Use a wrist strap connected
to the work surface as well as properly grounded (earthed) tools and equipment.
Keep the work area free of nonconductive materials such as ordinary plastic assembly aids
and foam packing.
Ensure proper grounding before touching a static-sensitive component or assembly.
Avoid touching pins, leads, or circuitry.
Place drives printed circuit board (PCB) assembly-side down on any surface.
Use conductive field service tools.

Removal and Replacement Procedures 2-3
Rack Warnings
The following warnings refer to the rack that the TaskSmart W2200 appliance server is
deployed in during pallet unloading, server deployment, and different installations.
Unloading the Rack from the Pallet
115 kg
253 lb
WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment:
Observe local occupational safety requirements and guidelines for heavy
equipment handling.
Obtain adequate assistance to lift and stabilize the product during installation
or removal.
Remove all pluggable power supplies and modules to reduce the weight of the
product.
Be sure that at least two people are available to safely unload the rack from
the pallet. An empty 42U rack weighs 115 kg (253 lb), is over 2.1 m (7 ft) tall,
and can become unstable when being moved on its casters. Do not stand in
front of the rack as it rolls down the ramp from the pallet; handle it from the
sides. Stabilize the server by keeping the unit on the rails.
Handling Components in the Rack
WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment:
Always load the heaviest item first, and load the rack from the bottom up. This method
makes the rack “bottom-heavy” and helps prevent the rack from becoming unstable.
The bottom stabilizers on the equipment must be fully extended. Be sure that the
equipment is properly supported/braced when installing options and boards.
Be sure that the rack is adequately stabilized before extending a component outside the
rack. Extend only one component at a time. A rack can become unstable if more than one
component is extended.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury, fire, or damage to the equipment, do not
overload the AC supply branch circuit that provides power to the rack.
Rack Stability
WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment, be sure that:
The leveling jacks are extended to the floor.
The full weight of the rack rests on the leveling jacks.
The stabilizing feet are secured to the rack if it is a single-rack installation.
The racks are coupled together in multiple-rack installations.
Only one component is extended at a time. A rack can become unstable if more than one
component is extended for any reason.
2-4 Compaq TaskSmart W2200 Appliance Server Maintenance and Service Guide
Server Warnings and Precautions
WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury from hot surfaces, allow the internal system
components to cool before touching them.
CAUTION: Protect the server from power fluctuations and temporary interruptions with a
regulating uninterruptible power supply (UPS). This device protects the hardware from damage
caused by power surges and voltage spikes and keeps the system in operation during a power
failure.
CAUTION: The TaskSmart W2200 appliance server must always be operated with the system
unit cover on. Proper cooling cannot be achieved if the system unit cover is removed.
Powering Down the Server
System power in the TaskSmart W2200 appliance server does not completely shut down from
the front panel Power On/Off switch. Although switching the server off removes power from
most electronics and the drives, portions of the power supply and some internal circuitry remain
active. To completely remove all power from the system, disconnect all power cords from the
server.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of injury from electric shock, disconnect all
power cords to completely remove power from the system.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment, ensure that only
one component is extended at a time. A rack can become unstable if more than one component
is extended for any reason.
WARNING: Because the rack allows you to stack computer components in a vertical rather
than a horizontal plane, you must take precautions to provide for rack stability and safety to
protect both personnel and property. Heed all cautions and warnings throughout the installation
instructions included with the server.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment, if the server
must be removed from the rack for device accessibility, place it on a sturdy table or
workbench. Refer to the Compaq TaskSmart W2200 Appliance Server Administration Guide for
further information on working with racks.
WARNING: Moving the Power On/Off switch to the off position does not completely remove
system power. Some portions of the power supply and some internal circuitry remain active.
Disconnect all power cords from the server to remove all power from the system.
Removal and Replacement Procedures 2-5
CAUTION: Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage electronic components. Be sure that you
are properly grounded (earthed) before beginning any installation procedure. For more
information, see Electrostatic Discharge Information earlier in this chapter.
IMPORTANT: Before being shut down by pressing the front panel Power On/Off switch, the TaskSmart
W2200 appliance server must be shut down from either the graphical user interface (GUI) or the
command line. For more information, refer to the Compaq TaskSmart W2200 Appliance Server
Administration Guide.
To power down the server after shutting down through the GUI:
1. Press the server Power On/Off switch to power down the server. When the server is
powered down, the power LED deactivates.
2. Verify that the fan is off by listening for the fan noise to stop.
3. Disconnect the power cord first from the AC outlet, and then from the server.
4. Disconnect all remaining cables on the server rear panel, including cables extending from
external connectors on expansion boards.
5. For stability and safety, position the server securely on a workbench or other solid surface.
The system is now without power and can be safely serviced.
