PRODUCT SAFETY
WARNINGS
Installation and servicing is only to be carried out by suitably qualified and experienced personnel to local or national
wiring standards.
Good engineering practice must be carried out at all times and all servicing and repairs carried out indoors.
The VDC1604 must only be powered with the class 2 isolated power supply provided.
Do not exceed the voltage and temperature limits given in the specification.
The Vista VDC1604 is designed for use in general purpose CCTV applications and has no other purpose.

UNPACKING
Keep your packaging for use if your VDC1604 is stored for a time or needs to be returned for whatever reason. The
packaging should contain:-

These Instructions
Check the product code on the serial number label. If you have an incorrect item or it is damaged then inform your supplier
and the carriers immediately. If the equipment is incorrect or damaged, do not attempt to use it.
IMPORTANT
In the event of power interruption, the VDC1604 will lose current camera and monitor selections and revert to its default
settings upon reconnection of the supply.
All monitor and camera pairings must be re-entered if required. Sequences and views will also need to be re-entered.
Timed functions, when active, will recall sequences/views/cameras within a short period dependent upon the resume
timer settings.
If this recovery action is not sufficient for the application, it is recommended that the unit and its associated equipment is
supplied from a secure and uninterruptible power supply.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Thank you for choosing the VDC1604 Vista Dome Controller. The VDC1604 is a small switching matrix designed to
control Domes and remote controlled cameras that respond to any one of the following RS485 twisted-pair telemetry
protocols: Vista PowerDome, Pelco D, Ultrak and VCL (note that dependant on the dome type, not all features may be
supported).
The system is capable of switching 16 video inputs to four video outputs and is controlled by a separate keyboard. Up to
four keyboards may be connected via BaxNet RS485 data bus.

INSTALLATION
Mounting the unit
The VDC1604 is designed to be used as a free standing or rack mounted unit using the mounting brackets supplied.
When choosing a suitable location for the unit, please ensure:
An electrical output socket (capable of supplying 240V AC 50Hz at 500mA) is located within a suitable distance for the
included Class 2 power supply.
The power supply cord cannot become pinched or trapped under a heavy object. The power cord should be routed so
that it is not likely to be walked on.
The unit is protected from the accidental ingress of foreign objects or liquid spills. The unit must not be used near
water e.g. near a swimming pool, or any other area that is classified as a wet or damp location.

INSTALLATION
When fixing the VDC1604 into a 19 rack, the two mounting brackets must be fixed to the unit. Remove the plastic plugs
from the fixing holes (two on each side of the unit) and fix the mounting brackets with the supplied M5 screws as shown
in figure 3 below.

Installing the keyboard
The VDC1604 functions are controlled by an external NPX/RKB/J3De desktop keyboard.

A single keyboard may be connected as shown in figure 4. Power is supplied to the keyboard by the keyboard connector
on the VDC1604. Note that the connection length A-B must not exceed 10m otherwise the keyboard will not receive
sufficient power. More than one keyboard may be connected (with a maximum of four keyboards) as shown in figure 5.

INSTALLATION
This connection toplology is know as Daisy-chain. The following rules must be observed:
1. A maximum of four keyboards can be connected.
2. The distance from A to F must not exceed 1200m (including the stub lengths).
3. Keyboards 1, 2, 3 and 4 will each require a separate PSU even if the total length of the RS485 network is less than 10m.
4. Cables A-B, C-E and D-F are screened/shielded Cat5, and are available from Vista in lengths of 1m up to 10m.
The standard baud rate for the VDC1604 is 9600 bps which, together with line impedances, will restrict the cabling
distances for the keyboard. Approved RS485 cable should be used for the data connections between the NAPs. In theory,
cabling distance can be up to 1.2 km. In practice however, the type of cable chosen, its routing, etc. will have an effect on
the maximum length that can be used.
The keyboard has built in network termination and/or biasing. For most small to medium sized installations, it should not
be necessary to change the switches from their default settings. Only for large installations should your network require
biasing and/or terminating. The switches are shown below. The default setting for switches 1, 2 and 3 is OFF. Switch 4 is
not used.

Baxnet Notes
1. A maximum of 16 devices may be connected to a BaxNet network. This includes VDC1604s Triplex Columbus and
keyboard combinations.
2. Baxnet RS485 addresses from 1 to 4 are reserved for VDC1604s or Triplex Columbus.
3. VDC1604 address IDs are between 1 and 16.
Setting the Keyboard ID
Each NPX/RKB/J3De keyboard on the Baxnet requires a unique RS485 address. Addresses 1 to 4 are restricted to
VDC1604 or Triplex Columbus units. We recommend that you use addresses 29 to 32. Keyboards with lower addresses
have control priority over keyboards with higher addresses.
1. Disconnect the power from the keyboard.
2. Reconnect the power.
3. Within 5 seconds of reconnecting the power, press the

Setting the keyboard baudrate
The default Baxnet baud rate for the keyboard and the VDC1604 and Triplex Columbus is 9600. This can be changed on
the keyboard and VDC1604, but not on the Triplex Columbus. To change the baud rate on the keyboard, follow the steps
below.
1. Disconnect the power from the keyboard.
2. Reconnect the power.
3. Within 5 seconds of reconnecting the power, press the

CONNECTIONS
Video Inputs
Video inputs are 75 ohm 1V peak-to-peak composite to PAL/CCIR standard. For each video input on the VDC1604, there
are two BNC connectors. One is for the camera input and the other is a looped-through output. Connect up to 16 video
inputs to the top row of BNC sockets. Connect any outputs that you wish to loop-through to the lower BNC socket in each
pair.
If you connect to both sockets, the VDC1604 automatically re-configures itself, removing the built in 75 ohm termination.
If you use the loop through facility, please ensure the connected equipment (e.g. monitor or VCR), provides a 75 ohm
termination at the end of the line.
Video Outputs
Video outputs are 75 ohm 1V peak-to-peak composite to PAL/CCIR standard. Any video input can be switched to any video
output. Your monitor should be set to 75 ohm.
Dome Telemetry
The VDC1604 has provision for the connection of dome cameras using any one of the following RS485 twisted-pair
telemetry protocols: Vista PowerDome, Pelco D, Ultrak and VLC. Please note that depending on the dome type, not all
functions of the dome may be available. Other standards will be available in future releases of the product. The telemetry
connections are shown schematically in Figure 7. Refer to the dome instruction manual for more information. Cable
preparation details are provided in Appendix B.

Alarm Inputs
The VDC1604 has provision for up to 16 alarm inputs. Input can be from a volt-free normally open or normally closed
contact and is software programmable. The alarm connections are via the 25-way D-type connector whose pin assignments
are shown in Figure 8.

Alarm Outputs
The VDC1604 has one pair of volt-free alarm contacts, (Alarm OP1), that is independently software programmable as
either normally open or normally closed. The contact is capable of switching up to 30V at 500mA (non-inductive).
Connections are shown in Figure 9.

NPX/KBD/J3De keyboards are provided with a joystick to control cameras fitted with pan/tilt heads. Where on screen
programming is required, the joystick is used to input text, navigate through menus, etc. Important Note: During power-
up, the keyboard performs a joystick calibration function. Do not move the joystick during this period until the keyboard
has been properly initialised.

PROGRAMMING
The VDC1604 menu system allows you to customise the system to meet your specific requirements. There are two
levels of menu, Installer and User. When the operator enters the Installer password, the Installer menu system is
accessible. Conversely, when the User password is entered, the User menu system is accessible. The User menu has
fewer options than the Installer menu but they operate in exactly the same way.

ENTERING THE MENU SYSTEM
The menu system is entered by pressing the Menu
M
key for at least 2 seconds.
Note that a valid monitor (1 to 3) must be selected before menu access can be
gained. A screen showing the software version will be displayed. Press the
enter key. The menu access screen will now be displayed prompting for a
password.
Password Entry
Enter the password using the numerical keys, then press the enter key. The
password entered will depend on whether you wish to enter the User menu or
the Installer menu.
Note
The factory set default password for the Installer menu is 7, 8, 9, 0. The
default User menu password is 1, 2, 3, 4. It is strongly advised that you
change these passwords as soon as possible in order to maintain system
security. Passwords may be changed in the System settings Menu.
Once the password has been correctly entered, the Installer or User Main
Menu screen will be displayed.
Note: If a password is lost, a recovery system is available. See Appendix A.
MENU NAVIGATION
The joystick is used to navigate the menu system. A field that can be edited is
shown in reverse video. In general, a menu item is selected and edited as
follows:
1. Use Joystick Up/Down movements to move up or down between fields
and/or menu items. The selected field is indicated by a cursor symbol4.
2. Press the Enter key (or Joystick right) to enter edit mode for the selected
menu item or field. The cursor will change from 4 to + to indicate that you
are in edit mode.
3. Then use either:
the Joystick Up/Down movement to select items from picklists, or
the Numerical keys to input numerical data
the Joystick Left to escape to the previous menu
the Joystick Right to perform an enter command
4. Press the Enter key (or joystick right) to exit edit mode. The cursor will
change from + to 4.

PROGRAMMING
EXITING THE MENU SYSTEM
Each submenu has a Previous menu field. To exit a submenu, either select
this item and press enter to return to the previous menu level, or press the
Escape
Esc
key. This will eventually bring you back to the Main Menu. Here, use
the joystick to select Exit menus and press enter. The Save and Exit menu will
be displayed.
In this menu, there are three choices:
Save changes and exit - selecting this will save any changes you have made
and then exit the menu system.
Discard changes and exit - selecting this will discard any changes you have
made and exit the menu system.
* Restore factory defaults - this menu item will reset all of the default factory
settings.
* Clear log - this command will clear the contents of the alarm log.
Cancel and return to menu - selecting this will close the Save and Exit screen
and return you to the main menu.
Alternatively, the menu system may be exited at any time and from any place by
pressing the Escape key. When used, this method will not save any menu
changes that have been made within the menu system.
Note that in order to preserve configuration integrity, each data entry screen
within the menu system should be exited by selecting Previous menu or by the
valid selection of a new menu.
* These menu items are only available to the installer.
PROGRAMMING THE TIME AND DATE
Your VDC1604 has a battery-backed clock that will retain the correct time, date and all other programmed data in the event
of power loss to the unit. The Time and Date menu is accessed from the main
menu.
Programming the Date
1. Select the date format field and use the joystick to select from the
picklist MM/DD/YY, DD/MM/YY or YY/MM/DD. Default is DD/MM/YY. Press
enter.
2. Select the Set field and use the number keys to enter the day (DD) in a
two digit form i.e. 01, 31, etc. Advance to the next field (MM) using the
joystick and enter the month in two digit form. Advance to the next field (YY)
and enter the year. Note the date must be entered in DD/MM/YY format.
3. Select the Set day field and use the joystick to choose the correct
day from the pick list.
4. Select Set clock to make the selected time active.
Programming the Time
1. Select the Time format field and use the up/down joystick to select 24 hour
or 12 hour from the picklist . Press enter. Note that in 12 hour format, a.m.
times are displayed 09.54 and p.m. times are displayed 09:54.
2. Select the Set time field. The hours field will be selected. Use the number
keys to enter the desired hour in a two digit format, i.e. 02, 13, etc. Advance
the cursor to the minutes field using the joystick and press enter. Use the
number keys to input the minutes. Press enter. Note that the time in this
field is always entered in 24 hour format regardless of how the time will
actually be shown by the on-screen display system.

To activate the time and date information you have entered, select Set clock

EDITING TEXT ITEMS
Some menus such as the Camera Setup menu and the View definition menu allow you to enter descriptive textual titles.
All titles are edited in the same manner. Once a title field has been selected with the joystick, pressing enter will invoke
the Text Edit screen. Here, letters are selected one at a time using the joystick and enter key until the desired title has
been created.
When the Text edit screen is opened, the first character of the currently selected
title will flash. Below the current title field are pick lines containing alphabetical
characters. A pick line is selected using up/down joystick movements. Individual
characters are selected using left/right joystick movements. To enter the
selected character into the title, press the enter key. The title character will be
replaced by the letter selected in the pick line. When a title character has been
entered, the cursor will automatically move to the next character in the title field.
Numerals, where required in the title field, are entered directly using the number
keys of the keyboard. A space is entered by selecting the character between the
* and Ä characters. When the desired title has been entered, use the up/down
joystick to select either:
Keep changes - this will save the title and return you to the menu from which
the Text edit screen was spawned.
Cancel - this will cancel any edited changes and return you to the menu from
which the Text edit screen was spawned.
CAMERA SETUP MENU
The Camera Setup Menu is accessible from the Main Menu. It allows you to set up various parameters such as video loss
action, titles, etc. on a camera by camera basis. Use the joystick up/down to move through the menu and its fields.
Camera number
This allows you to select the video input to be edited. Video inputs number 1 to
16 and correspond to cameras 1 to 16. Use the number keys to enter the video
input.
Source type
Allows you to specify the type of camera that is connected to the selected video
input. This pick list has the following choices:
Fixed - static camera
PTZ - dome or pan/tilt camera
NONE - no video source connected to the input. Choose this option where you
do not want to get erroneous video-loss alarms.
Video loss
This allows you to choose whether the video loss alarm for the selected video
input is active. The pick list has the following choices:
On - Video loss is recorded in the alarm log and displayed on the system
banner.
Off - Video loss is ignored.
Title line
This menu item allows you to control the vertical position of the cameras on-
screen title. The display is divided into 11 lines with line 0 being at the top and
line 10 at the bottom. The camera title can occupy lines 0, 1 or 2. Use the
number keys to enter a line number between 0 and 2.
Title text
Selecting this option and pressing enter invokes the Text Edit Screen (see
EDITING TEXT ITEMS page 16) allowing you to specify a camera title of up to 22
characters. This is the title which will appear when the video input is selected.
Set camera address
Select this option to set up the Ultrak KDZ dome camera for operation on the
dome network.

SET CAMERA ADDRESS MENU (ULTRAK KDZ DOME ONLY)
Set camera address
This option allows the Ultrak KDZ series dome to be programmed for operation
on the RS485 dome network.
Serial No.
Note the domes serial number and enter it into this field. Note that the letter A
of the serial number is entered as 0 e.g. a serial number of A1234567 is
entered as 01234567.
Camera No.
This number corresponds directly with the address the dome will take on the
RS485 network. Note that duplicated camera numbers will cause multiple
domes to be controlled.
Sed to camera
Select this option to send the programmed settings to the KDZ dome. This
option is required every time information is entered.
Note: Connecting the Ultrak KDZ dome only
Connect the KDZ dome to the VD1604 dome network port on the reverse of the
unit (page 8). Power up the dome, then the VDC1604. Refer to the above for
information on setting the serial number and RS485 network address.
SEQUENCES AND VIEWS MENU
This menu is called from the Main menu and allows you to define camera sequences and views (a preset and camera
combination). The menu has three sub menus, Program View, Program Sequence and Timed functions.
PROGRAM VIEW MENU
This menu allows you to set up any one of up to 64 views which can be defined
for any of the cameras connected to the system. Use the joystick up/down to
move through the menu and its fields.
View
This is the number uniquely defining the view. Use the number keys to enter a
number (1 to 64).
Name line
This menu item allows you to control the vertical position of the on-screen
caption for the view. The display is divided into 11 lines with line 0 being at the
top and line 10 at the bottom. The name can occupy lines 7, 8 or 9. Use the
number keys to enter a line number between 7 and 9.
Title field
Selecting the title field and pressing enter invokes the Text Edit Screen (see
EDITING TEXT ITEMS page 16) allowing you to specify a view title of up to 22
characters which will appear when this view is selected.
Camera
Use this field to select the desired camera. Enter the camera number (1 to 16)
using the number keys.
Preset
This field allows you to select the preset position that is invoked when the view
is selected. Enter the preset number (1 to 99) using the number keys.
PROGRAM SEQUENCE MENU
This menu allows you to select a sequence of views or cameras that can be
displayed on any monitor. Up to eight sequences can be defined. The sequence
can comprise 16 views and/or cameras.
View sequence
This field is the number of the sequence currently being defined. Use the
number keys to enter a number (1 to 8).

SEQUENCES AND VIEWS MENU
V or C
This field allows you to determine whether the step consists of a Camera (C) or
a View (V). Use the joystick to select V or C from the picklist.
This field is the number of the camera or view to be recalled at the current step.
Use the number keys to enter a number. Note that entering 00 will end the
view sequence at that step.
Dwell
This field allows you to assign a dwell time in seconds for each camera or view
in the sequence. Use the number keys to enter a time in seconds between 3
and 99. Default dwell time is 3 seconds.
TIMED FUNCTIONS MENU
This menu allows you to set up Cameras, Views or View Sequences, on the
four monitor outputs, which are invoked at user-defined times of the day or
week. Up to eight of these timed functions can be defined.
Function
This field allows you to select one of the eight timed functions for editing. Use
the number keys to select which timed function you want to edit.
On
This field determines the day on which the selected timed function will initiate.
Note that the time frame itself may overlap into the next day. The pick list
comprises:
MON, TUE, WED, THU, FRI, SAT, SUN, WEND (weekend), WDAY (Mon - Fri), EDAY
(every day), NONE (timed functions off).
at
This field allows you to enter the time for the function to commence. Use the
number keys to enter the desired value in Hours and Minutes. Times must be
entered in 24 hour format.
till
This field allows you to enter the end time for the function hours and minutes.
Use the number keys to enter the desired value in Hours and Minutes.
The sequences/views etc. running under timed function will remain in force
after the timed function is completed until manual intervention or another timed
function commences.
Monitor
Shows which view or sequence will be displayed by each of the four monitors
for the currently selected timed function This field cannot be edited.
View/Seq
This field consists of a pick list that allows you to select, for each monitor,
whether the timed function is a VIEW, Seq (Sequence) CAM (camera) or NONE.
Selecting NONE will not change the current image on the selected monitor
when the Timed function initiates. Note that changing the View/Seq field will
automatically set the corresponding No. field to 00. You must enter the required
No. after the View/Seq field has been changed.

This field allows you to specify the number of the View or Sequence. Use the
number keys to enter a number for the View or Sequence.
Restart in
When a timed function is running, there may be instances of menu events or
operator input via the keyboard. This field allows you to specify a time period
after which the timed function will resume. Use the number keys to enter the
desired time period in seconds (10 to 60 in 10 second increments). The default
setting for this field is 0 seconds. This effectively disables the resume function.
Note that manual selection of a sequence on a monitor will override the Restart
in function on that monitor only. Other monitors will use the function as normal.
Two or more timed functions should not be programmed to overlap. If this does
occur, the timed function running will continue to completion at which point the
second timed function will start.
