Overview
StorView® Storage Management software is a full-featured, graphical,
HTML-based, software suite designed to configure, manage, and monitor
storage subsystems. StorView is built on a modular design and currently
supports only the RAID Module. However, other supported modules will
become available in the future.
The RAID Module provides the support for the Gateway E-842R RAID Storage
Solution with an extensive set of configuration and management tools.
StorViews RAID Module is available in two versions: host-based and embedded.
The host-based version is installed on the host computer system. The
embedded version is installed on the RAID Controller.
StorView’s server component discovers storage solutions, manages and
distributes message logs, and communicates with other server components
installed on the same local network and external subnet networks. StorView has
an HTML-based interface that is accessed with a Web browser.
StorView incorporates Web server software (Apache 2.0) as part of the
installation, which provides the interface between the server component and
HTML interface. During installation, the Web server is automatically configured
and requires no further management. The installation of the Web server
software is self-contained and does not conflict with other Web server software
currently installed on your system.
Inter-server communication
Multicast
StorView’s server component uses multicasting technology to provide
inter-server communication with other servers when the Global Access license
is installed. During the server’s initial start-up, it performs a multicast
registration using the default multicast IP address of 225.0.0.225 on port 9191.
After registration is complete, the server can receive all packets sent to the
multicast address.
All packets sent to the multicast address remain in the local network, unless an
explicit server IP address outside the subnet is added in the “Inter-Server
Communication” Explicit StorView Server IPs > Preference Settings. For more
information, see “Monitoring settings” on page 35. The inter-server
communication abilities provide StorView with remote monitoring of other
installations of StorView and their monitored storage solutions.
StorView can communicate with any StorView installation on the local network.
These other StorView servers are displayed on the Main window and are listed
under the Other Servers section. They display the IP address, name, and overall
status of that servers monitored storage solution. The server icon changes
states to indicate status. For more information, see “Server sidebar section” on
page 26.
Each server sends a check-in packet every 10 seconds. After an initial check-in
packet is received, all StorView servers know of the existence of the other
servers. If a server fails to send three check-in packets, the other servers mark
that server as missing. This is indicated by a white Server icon displayed on the
Main window under the Other Servers section.

When the server service that owns the monitored storage solution is down for
any reason and three check-in packets are not received, the monitoring is
automatically transferred to another StorView server.
License manager
There are two different StorView applications. One (the host-based version) is
installed on a computer with the Windows operating system installed. The other
is embedded within the E-842R. The embedded version has fewer capabilities
than the Windows version.
License access limits
The Local Access is the default license of the host-based software. It provides
the basic control, management, and monitoring of the locally attached storage
solution.
The Remote Access is the default license included with the embedded version.
It provides the same functions as the Local Access license and it adds support
for server failover and remote login. Remote Access does not support features
such as e-mail notices and SNMP. However it does offer an upgrade path to the
Global Access license.
The Global Access license is offered for the above systems through a licensing
program and provides the capabilities of the Local Access features plus remote
login, configuration, and monitoring. It also provides alert notifications through
e-mail and SNMP. With the Global's remote login and management, you can
focus or log into a different storage solution that is not locally attached to the
host so you can manage and monitor other solutions from a single location.

Important
The Local manager is provided free,
without the requirement of a serial
number or activation code. It lets you
configure, manage, and monitor your
storage system attached to your local
host system. The Global manager lets you
perform remote login, management and
monitoring, and monitoring failover plus
e-mail alert notifications.
The Global manager requires a serial number and activation code.
7 (Global manager only) Type the product serial number and activation
code.
8 Type your user name and password.
Important
This is the user name and password that
will be established for the Web server
software that is installed as a component
of StorView. You can use as many as 258
characters for the user name or
password, and they are case sensitive.
After the installation is complete, a message tells you that the StorView
software has started, lists the available utilities.
The following utilities are provided to manage StorView:
/opt/StorView/StartStorView
/opt/StorView/StopStorView
/etc/rc.d/init.d/StorView {start|stop}
The directory where the software installs is the /opt/StorView directory.
9 To start StorView and the Apache Web server, type ./StartStorView.
10 To stop StorView and the Apache Web server, type ./StopStorView.
11 To determine if StorView is running, type ps -ef | grep -i StorView.
Look for a running process named StorViewServer. There are several of
them. The Apache Web server process is named httpd.
The above command is the option we recommend. However, you can use
other options.
Linux also has a pgrep command. Type pgrep StorViewServer or pgrep
httpd and get a list of process IDs. No IDs means StorView is not running.
12 Start StorView by opening your Web browser and entering the IP address
of the host attached to the storage system, followed by the port number.
The format is HTTP://127.0.0.1:9292. or HTTP://localhost:9292.
Removing StorView from Linux platforms
To remove StorView from Linux:
1 Log in as root.
2 Change directories by typing cd /opt/StorView
3 From the command prompt, type ./UninstallStorView
Make sure that the processes named StorViewServer are no longer in the
list. Absence of these processes indicates that it is removed.
CHAPTER 2: Installation www.gateway.com

Embedded StorView initial setup
If this is the first startup of the Embedded StorView module, you will probably
need to configure the network settings. The Embedded StorView module
supports both DHCP and manual network settings. By default the Embedded
StorView module looks for a DHCP server to obtain an IP address. If one is not
found, StorView searches to determine if an IP address was previously assigned.
If an address was not previously assigned, the system defaults to an IP address
of:
10.1.1.5 for the lower RAID Controller (Controller 0)
10.1.1.6 for the upper RAID Controller (Controller 1)
10.1.1.7 if an error is detected
Subnet Mask is 255.0.0.0
A tool is provided to configure new Embedded StorView modules. From
Windows platforms, you access the tool through the Embedded link on the disc
navigation menu. From Linux platforms, you access the tool through a
command line executable. For more information, see “Installing on Windows
platforms” on page 6 or “Installing on Linux” on page 12.
When you run the Embedded StorView Setup program, it broadcasts UDP
packets and any Embedded StorView module replies with UDP packets
containing their information. A list of uninitialized systems is displayed.
Uninitialized systems are those which have not had the default user name and
password changed. If you create a configuration with arrays and logical drives
but you have not changed the login name and password, the system is still be
considered an uninitialized system. During the process of configuring an
Embedded StorView module, you have to enter a new password and confirm
that password. The default password is password.
The Embedded StorView module is identified by its MAC and IP address. You
want to configure one Embedded StorView module at a time. You can find the
MAC address located on a label affixed to the top of the controller case or by
accessing the VT-100 text-based menu function for Embedded StorView Menu
mode and viewing the network settings. Note the specific address of each
controller in multiple controller environments and the location where that
specific controller is installed in the enclosure.
Setting up the Embedded StorView Module in Microsoft Windows
To set up the Embedded StorView Module in Microsoft Windows:
1 Insert the Gateway External Backup CD (EBCD) into your CD drive.
2 When the autorun program automatically starts the navigation menu,
click on the link for the hardware (E-842R) product which you have
installed.
