23 Anchor davits
26 THE CUTTY SARK: STEP BY STEP
23Cut two 34mm pieces of walnut to make the anchor davits 104. Round off the lower ends and the drill two 0.8mm-diameter holes to simulate
the anchor hoisting pulleys. Fit the davit hoops 105 and nail the davit struts 106. In one of the sides of the davits, drill three 0.8mm-diameter
holes to fit the small eyebolts 93, and a 1mm-diameter hole to fit the belaying pins 103. Insert the davit levers 107 through the two small eyebolts 93
and in the ship’s hull drill a 1mm-diameter hole on the side of the gap through which the davit is to be inserted. Insert the davit and its lever through
their corresponding holes, and with the nails 26 pin the anchor davits to the bow forecastle deck. Fit the small rings 108 in the belaying pins 103 of the
davits. Fit the large eyebolt 109, the eight belaying pins 103 and the bitts 110 to the bow.

24Cut a 28mm piece of walnut to make the newel post for the
windlass lever 111. In the upper part of the newel post, make a
1.5mm-diameter hole for inserting the windlass lever 112. With the
0.8mm-diameter brass wire, make the two lever supports 113. Fit the
supports on the lever and paint them black. With the 1mm-diameter
brass wire, make the bell bracket 114 and glue this to the bell 115. Fit
this unit into its place on the bow forecastle deck. Cut a 25mm piece
of sapele to make the bowsprit pinrail 116 and fit the four pinrails 103
into this. Drill 1mm-diameter holes in the gunwale covers 56, according
to the sizes indicated, and insert the rail stanchions 117. Insert the
handrails 118 through these. Glue the capstan 119 and the double
hawser guides 120.
