Description
The backup battery is a 12 VDC lead-acid battery that provides enough power to keep the
Series 4000 timeclock functioning at full capacity for up to two hours, depending on
whether optional devices are connected to the timeclock. For example, if a linear imager or
bar code wand reader is connected to the timeclock, the amount of time that the backup
battery can provide power may be less than two hours.
The backup battery option kit includes the following:
!Backup battery
!Charger board
!Cable to connect the charger board to the battery
!Cable to connect the charger board to the Series 4000 timeclock’s main board
It takes 24 hours for the Series 4000 timeclock to charge the backup battery after you install
it. Also, if the battery ever becomes depleted (completely discharged) from use, allow 24
hours for the timeclock to recharge the battery.
When the Series 4000 timeclock is on AC power, the amber power LED (the bottom LED in
the upper right corner of the timeclock) lights steadily; when the timeclock is on backup
battery power, the amber power LED blinks.
Warning
The type of lead-acid battery used in the Series 4000 timeclock can generate hundreds of
amperes for short periods of time if its timeclock posts or cable leads are shorted together.
Use extreme caution when handling the battery to ensure that its cable leads do not come in
contact with each other and that its timeclock posts do not come in contact with metal.

Before you begin, please read the following:

There is danger of explosion if the battery is incorrectly replaced. Replace the battery only
with the same or equivalent type of battery recommended by the manufacturer. Dispose of
used batteries according to the manufacturers instructions.

Timeclock Installation Guide (that shipped with the
timeclock), until it refers you to this Backup Battery
Option Kit Installation Guide.
2. Follow the instructions in this guide, starting with
“Installing the Backup Battery Option” on page 8.
3. Go back to the Series 4000 Badge Timeclock
Installation Guide and continue following those
instructions, beginning with “Installing the
Transformer” in Chapter 2.
You have already installed the Series
4000 timeclock and now want to add
or replace the backup battery.
Follow the instructions in this guide, beginning with the
section called “Preparing an Installed Series 4000
Timeclock for Battery Installation” beginning on page 3.

Installation
If you have already installed the Series 4000 timeclock, do the following before you install
the backup battery:
1. If necessary, collect data from the timeclock using your host application software.
2. Open the timeclock’s cover by using the security wrench to loosen the security screw on
the right side of the timeclock.
3. Disconnect the transformer in the timeclock from the AC power source. Depending on
how you installed the timeclock, do one of the following:
!Unplug the power cord from an AC outlet external to the timeclock.
!If the timeclock is mounted over an AC outlet, unplug the power cord from that
outlet.
!If you used the internal AC outlet, unplug the power cord from the internal outlet.
4. Disconnect the transformer from the timeclock. To do this:
a. Unplug the power cord from the transformer.
b. Disconnect the transformer cable from the timeclock’s main board.

5. Remove the transformer from the timeclock. To do this:
a. Trace the cable back to the transformer, freeing the cable from the routing channel
in the timeclock.
b. Carefully lift the transformer up and out from behind the wire transformer clip, and
out of the timeclock.
6. Remove the wire transformer clip (see the following illustration) from the base so that
you have room to install the backup battery. Do this by squeezing both sides of the clip
until you can lift it from the base.

7. If you are replacing an existing backup battery, perform the following steps.
Otherwise, proceed to “Installing the Backup Battery Option,” beginning on page 8.
a. Disconnect the battery charger board from the timeclocks main board.
b. Trace the wires back to the charger board, freeing them from the hooks molded into
the base of the timeclock.

c. Disconnect the battery charger board from the positive and negative terminals of the
backup battery.
d. Loosen the screw in the center of the battery charger board and remove the board
from the timeclock.

e. Remove the battery from the base of the timeclock.
You are now ready to install the new backup battery. Proceed to “Installing the Backup
Battery Option,” beginning on page 8.

Use the following procedure to install the backup battery and its charger board.
Note
For purposes of clarity, the illustrations in this procedure do not show detail that is not
directly related to installing the backup battery. For example, an Ethernet cable is not
shown. The illustrations also show the timeclock mounted to cover an AC outlet. However,
this procedure applies to all power source scenarios.
1. If you are installing the Series 4000 timeclock and have mounted the base to the wall,
perform this step.
If you are adding or replacing the backup battery in your installed timeclock, go to
step 2.
Remove the wire transformer clip from the base so that you have room to install the
backup battery. Do this by squeezing both sides of the clip until you can lift it from the
base.

2. Position the battery in the base of the timeclock as shown.

3. Position the transformer clip back in the timeclock base, as shown in the following
illustration. Squeeze the clip to lock it into position under the two molded hooks in the
base.
4. Plug the cables that came with the battery into the connectors on the charger board.
Match the ends of each cable with the pin connectors on the board.

5. Position the charger board in the base and secure it with the supplied screw.
6. Connect the charger board to the positive and negative terminals of the backup battery.
Use the hooks molded into the base of the timeclock to secure the cable along its route.

Note
If you are in the process of installing the Series 4000 timeclock, return to the Series 4000
Badge Timeclock Installation Guide and continue with “Installing the Transformer” in
Chapter 2. If you are adding or replacing the battery in your installed timeclock, continue
with this procedure.
7. Install the transformer back into the timeclock. To do this:
a. Position the transformer back in place behind the wire transformer clip. Ensure that
the end of the transformer with the permanently attached cable is facing down.
b. Route the transformer cable (cable coming from the bottom of the transformer)
back to its connection on the main board, inside the cover of the timeclock.
c. Connect the transformer cable to the main board.
d. Plug the power cord into the top of the transformer.
8. Connect the battery charger board to the timeclock’s main board. See the following
illustration.
9. Plug the transformer into the AC power source.
10. After the timeclock powers up, close and lock the timeclock’s cover, using the security
wrench to tighten the security screw on the right side of the timeclock.
