This manual contains important information on the proper use and
maintenance of the Rigid MIS Instrument Rack. All personnel
involved in the use and maintenance of this rack must carefully
review and comply with the Safety Precautions and instructions
contained in this manual. These instructions are important to
protect the health and safety of personnel using this equipment and
should be retained in a conveniently accessible area for quick
reference.
Advisory IMPORTANT: A listing of the Safety Precautions to be observed
when using and servicing this equipment can be found in SECTION 1
of this manual. Do not use the equipment until you have become
familiar with this information.
STERIS does not intend, recommend nor represent in any way the
Rigid MIS Instrument Rack be used for the terminal disinfection or
sterilization of any regulated medical device. This rack is intended
only to perform an initial step in the processing of soiled, reusable
medical devices.
If medical devices will be contacting blood or compromised tissues,
such devices must be terminally processed in accordance with
Good Hospital Practices before each use in human patients.
STERIS does not recommend processing flexible endoscopes,
single-use instruments, rigid telescopes (optical lens), fiber-optic
cables, multi-part instruments that cannot be disassembled, heat-
sensitive devices and coagulating electrodes in the Rigid MIS
Instrument Rack. Processing these types of instruments may result in
instrument or equipment damage as well as improperly cleaned
items. All items treated in this rack must stand temperatures ranging
from 140 to 240°F [60 to 116°C].
The Rigid MIS Instrument Rack is specifically designed to only
process goods as outlined in this manual. If there is any doubt about
a specific material or product, contact the instrument manufacturer
for recommended washing techniques.
Indications For Use The Rigid MIS Instrument Rack is designed to be used in the washer/
disinfector for the efficient cleaning, rinsing, drying and low-level
thermal disinfection of rigid minimally invasive surgical instruments.
IMPORTANT: The Rigid MIS Instrument Rack is designed to be used
only in conjunction with the RIGID MIS cycle in the Reliance® 444
Single-Chamber Washer/Disinfector equipped with the Enzyme
treatment option or in conjunction with the Enzyme treatment option
in the Reliance® Synergy® Washer/Disinfector and Reliance® Genfore®
Washer/Disinfector.

The following Safety Precautions must be observed when operating or servicing this equipment. WARNING
indicates the potential for personal injury and CAUTION indicates the potential for damage to equipment. For
emphasis, certain Safety Precautions are repeated throughout the manual. It is important to review ALL Safety
Precautions before operating or servicing the equipment.
Strictly following these Safety Precautions enhances the Customer’s ability to safely and effectively utilize the unit
and helps avoid improper maintenance methods which may damage the unit or render it unsafe. It is important to
understand that these Safety Precautions are not exhaustive; Customers are encouraged to develop their own
safety policies and procedures to enhance and complement these Safety Precautions.
WARNING – PERSONAL INJURY AND/OR EQUIPMENT DAMAGE HAZARD:

Always load and unload items while facing rack. Trocar ends sticking out of rack can be extremely sharp
and can cause injuries such as cuts.
Door cannot be opened during a cycle. In case of an emergency requiring opening of door, press
STOP/RESET touch pad to interrupt cycle.
Regularly scheduled preventive maintenance is required for safe and reliable operation of this
equipment. Contact STERIS to schedule preventive maintenance or obtain the necessary washer/
disinfector Maintenance Manual if preventive maintenance is done by the Customer.
Repairs and adjustments to this equipment must be made only by STERIS or STERIS-trained service
personnel. Repairs and adjustments performed by unqualified personnel or installation of unauthorized
parts could cause personal injury, result in improper equipment performance, void the warranty or result
in costly damage. Contact STERIS regarding service options.
To avoid personal injuries, always load or unload rack on appropriate loading cart or surface.
Washer detergents can cause adverse effects to exposed tissues. Do not get in eyes, on skin or attempt
to swallow. Read and follow precautions and instructions on detergent label and in Safety Data Sheet
(SDS) prior to handling detergent containers or servicing detergent injection pumps. Wear appropriate
personal protective equipment (PPE) whenever handling detergents or servicing detergent injection
pumps and lines.
When cycle is completed, wait until water flow stops before opening door and unloading washer/
disinfector. Hot water/steam may be sprayed through door opening if door is opened too soon. Wear
appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) whenever reaching into wash chamber.
When cycle is complete, wash chamber, rack and clean items are extremely hot. Allow load to cool to
room temperature and always wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) before removing
rack from wash chamber and handling clean items.

To avoid slippery floor conditions, immediately wipe up any spilled liquids or condensation. If spills and
drippage are detergents or other chemicals, follow safety precautions and handling procedures set forth
on detergent or chemical label and/or Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
Before starting a cycle, ensure rotary spray arms in wash chamber and on manifolded accessory rack
are not obstructed and rotate freely. If rotary spray arms are obstructed, equipment damage may result
and washer/disinfector will be unable to effectively process load.
Instruments processed in this rack must be compatible with chemicals used. Always follow instrument
manufacturer's recommendations for chemicals.
To avoid equipment and product damage and maximize processing efficiency, always load soiled items
as instructed on rack.
To prevent voiding the warranty or damaging the equipment, use only authorized STERIS replacement
parts.
Use nonabrasive cleaners when cleaning rack. Follow directions on containers and rub in a back-and-
forth motion (in same direction as surface grain). Abrasive cleaners will damage stainless steel.
When choosing a chemical, select one with a low chloride content. Chemicals with a high chloride
content can be harmful to stainless steel.

Instruments
1. Disassemble all instrument components prior to loading in rack.
2. Open stopcocks and instrument valves.
3. Fully open all handles, forceps jaws and graspers.
4. Remove seals and protective caps from each instrument.
2.3 Loading Rack
Lower-Level
Lower-level of Rigid MIS Instrument Rack is divided in two sections:
A large manifolded mesh tray to hold cannulated instruments.
Compartmented tray with a mesh cover, used to hold a variety of
small items such as end caps, compression springs, washers,
body caps as well as handles and small non-cannulated items.
2.3.1 Lower-Level Manifolded
Tray
See Figure 2-2, Figure 2-3 and Figure 2-4.
Lower-level manifolded tray can hold up to twelve cannulated
instruments (such as Verres needles, outer tubes, biopsy channels),
rods, as well as non-cannulated components.
1. Open hold-down frame.
2. Insert each cannulated instrument end into a spray jet nozzle.
Interior diameter: > 1 mm
Exterior diameter: < 4 mm
3. Manually clean any visible soil on port of cannulated instruments
where a flexible tubing connector will be installed.
4. Connect a flexible tubing to each cannulated instrument and
Verres needle.
5. Insert rods and non-cannulated instruments through end of tray
openings. Slide items under instrument guides.
6. Connect suction/irrigation port to flexible tubing (see Figure 2-3,
Detail B).
IMPORTANT: Do not connect single-port suction/irrigation
instruments to a flexible tube (see Figure 2-5, Detail A). On multi-port
instruments, one port must always be left open (see Figure 2-5,
Detail B). This allows cleaning solution to be evacuated out of
instrument.
7. Distal ends (forceps jaws, scissors cutting edge or graspers)
must be fully opened.
NOTE: Do not insert distal ends in instrument holders. Distal
ends are cleaned by water circulating through rotating spray arm.
8. Close hold-down frame. Push lower-level manifolded tray back
into position inside rack frame.

2.3.2 Lower-Level
Compartmented Tray
See Figure 2-4.
1. Pull out compartmented tray from rack frame.
2. Open mesh cover.
3. Place small light items such as end caps, compression springs,
washers and body caps into compartments with cover.
4. Place instrument handles and small non-cannulated items into
larger section of compartmented tray.
IMPORTANT: All instrument handles must be fully open.
5. Close compartmented tray cover. Push compartmented tray
back into position inside rack frame.
2.4 Loading Upper-
Level Rack
IMPORTANT: Hollow trocars (with air/gas channels) must be
manually pre-cleaned to ensure cleaning solution flow. Please refer to
instrument manufacturer’s recommended cleaning procedures.
IMPORTANT: Instrument channels must be clear of any debris
clogging channels prior to loading into rack. Cleaning solution must
be able to flow through instrument to clean interior surfaces.
2.4.1 Instrument Holders for
Cannulated Instruments
See Figure 2-5 and Figure 2-7.
Upper-level rack may hold up to four sleeves or reducer sleeves, or
sixteen cannulated instruments (such as outer tubes and biopsy
channels) using instrument holders.
Sleeves and Reducer Sleeves (Up to Four)
1. Sleeves and reducer sleeves specifications:
Interior diameter: > 5 mm
Exterior diameter: > 10 mm
Length: < 330 mm
2. Connect instrument holders to spray nozzle jets.
3. Insert sleeves and reducer sleeves into instrument holders.
4. Manually clean any visible soil on port of cannulated instruments
where a flexible tubing connector will be installed.
5. Connect flexible tubing to suction/irrigation port as required.
IMPORTANT: Do not connect single suction/irrigation port
instruments to a flexible tube (see Figure 2-5, Detail A). On multi-port

2.4.2 Spindles See Figure 2-6 and Figure 2-7.
Upper-level rack also provides a total of twenty spindles in three
sizes for trocars, sleeves, bridges and automatic flap valves of
different sizes and lengths.
Trocars, Sleeves, Bridges and Automatic Flap Valves
(Up to Twenty)
1. SMALL SPINDLES (ten) – Trocars, sleeves, bridges, automatic
flap valves specifications:
Interior diameter: 3 to 7 mm
Length: < 185 mm
MEDIUM SPINDLES (six) – Trocars, sleeves, bridges, automatic
flap valves specifications:
Interior diameter: 5 to 11 mm
Length: < 260 mm
LARGE SPINDLES (four) – Trocars, sleeves, bridges, automatic
flap valves specifications:
Interior diameter: 10 to 15 mm

2. Slide spring stoppers onto spindles.
3. Adjust height of each spring stopper to instrument height.

3.1 RIGID MIS Cycle
Operation
Rigid MIS Instrument Rack must be used exclusively in conjunction
with any Reliance® 444 Single-Chamber Washer/Disinfector
equipped with Enzyme treatment option AND programmed with a
RIGID MIS Cycle, or in conjunction with any Reliance® Synergy®
Washer/Disinfector or Reliance® Genfore® Washer/Disinfector
equipped with Enzyme treatment option.
Following cycle description applies to pre-programmed RIGID MIS
cycle, which is the most extensive combination of pre-programmed
treatments.
For Reliance 444 washer only: If washer/disinfector is equipped
with Enzyme treatment option, but control panel is not already
programmed with a RIGID MIS Cycle, see SECTION 3.2, HOW TO
PROGRAM RIGID MIS CYCLE, for step-by-step instructions.
1. Ensure Main Power switch (located behind upper service access
panel) is in ON position.
2. Position POWER-OFF/STANDBY switch to POWER position.

Reliance® ATS Automated Transport System or SCS
Conveyor System: Cycle is started automatically when RIGID
MIS bar code is detected by bar code reader.
