General

Your varix M2 cordless handset is linked to various base-stations (so-called ﬁxed parts sited in

your vicinity) via a wireless connection, so that it can be used without difﬁculty within the

entire transmission (coverage) area of the wireless network.

The base-stations, in turn, are connected to the varix 14 or varix 200 PABX system, thus

enabling you to use this system’s many facilities, ensuring fast and ﬂexible accessibility.

All you need to make telephone calls, therefore, is the varix M2 cordless handset and the

charger so that you can recharge the battery when necessary (cf. page 86).

Get acquainted with the many features and facilities offered by your cordless phone. You will

ﬁnd out about a lot of new functions, and in the course of time you will come to appreciate

the advantages of these.

General key layout

Each of the keys of your varix M2 has two functions. In the

following descriptions, the function of the key at the “shift

level” is indicated by the shift symbol,

SHIFT key – switches from one function level to the

other.

CONNECT key – switches the microphone and ear-

phone on and off.

SERVICE key – starts / concludes programming.

Local mode – program local settings.

STORE key – stores the selection /entry or proceeds to

next level.

LOCK key – locks/unlocks the keypad,

(even when out of range).

DISCONNECT key – terminates the current call. Your

handset is ready for the next call immediately.

ON/OFF key – switches the handset on and off

(even when out of range).

DELETE key – deletes entries.

MUTE key – switches microphone on and off.

HOLD key – starts or concludes an enquiry call .

REPEAT DIALLING key – re-dials the last telephone

number called.

To switch your cordless handset on and off, use the following key sequence.

You cannot make or receive telephone calls unless the handset is switched on.

You can select whether every keystroke is to be conﬁrmed by a “beep” tone or not.

It is possible to lock the keypad to prevent unwanted entries. This feature can also be

activated/deactivated when you are outside the access range.

To unlock the keypad, repeat the same key sequence.The handset is automatically unlocked

when someone tries to call you. Once you have hung up, the keypad is locked again.

To leave a menu item without storing the setting, press the DISCONNECT key. This returns

you to the main menu. To quit the menu, press the DISCONNECT key once more.

Display

When the cordless handset is not in use, the user display will show you your telephone

number, and, if registered, your name, so that you can always distinguish your handset from

others (idle-state display). When you use the handset, the display will show relevant

information, such as the number dialled or the procedure currently being executed.

When internal calls are received, the telephone number, and the name, if registered, of the

caller is displayed. For external calls, you are either shown the display message “ext. call” or

the telephone number of the caller (for an ISDN connection). To enable you to keep a check

on the charges being accumulated during a call, the sum and the number of units are also

shown, or (if so conﬁgured), the call duration.

In addition, display symbols provide you with information on the status of your handset. There

is a display, for example, telling you whether the battery is fully or only partly charged, or

whether it is almost empty; the range display tells you when you are leaving the coverage

range, and the wireless connection display indicates whether the connection is stable or not.

Since you can be called on your cordless handset via more than one line (as conﬁgured by

the service department), the handset has a so-called DEVICE key. The telephone number of

your handset is assigned to this key. You will need this key, for example, to shuttle between

calls or whenever you wish to switch back to the original connection on your own line after

making an enquiry. Your DEVICE key is the shift-level number 1 on the keypad ( U1).

The most important facilities required when telephoning are combined in a group and can be

programmed on the

key on the second level of the numeral keypad. The facilities: Hold,

Pickup, Shuttle, Transfer, Accept, Call-back, Call waiting and Intrusion are all “stacked” on

this key. To activate a facility, simply press the case SHIFT key and scroll using the

key, then

conﬁrm the selection. It is advisable to program the MULTIFUNCTION key if you use these

facilities often. A more detailed description is given on page 67.

You can program the second level of the number keys with internal or external telephone

numbers (see page 69). Dialling with the DESTINATION key has the same effect as dialling a

telephone number, so you can also use a DESTINATION key instead of entering a telephone

number for all procedures described in this chapter.

If your system has a charges registration facility, the amount and

the number of units is displayed whenever a self-dialled external

call is made.

The charges appear automatically in the second display line during the call. It is also possible

to switch off the charges display, or to switch over to call duration display (see page 65).

If you have switched your handset over to call duration display (see

page 65), in the second line of the display you will be shown the

duration, in hours, minutes and seconds, of the respective internal

or external call.

The duration display is incremented at ﬁve-second intervals. If several calls are connected

simultaneously, each call is timed separately.

The MUTE key can be used to switch off the microphone temporarily so that

the opposite party cannot hear what you are saying, but without interrupting

the connection.

The fact that the microphone is switched off is indicated by the mute symbol in the display. To

switch the microphone on again, press the MUTE key a second time.

HUR

The last number to be dialled is stored to memory and can be dialled again

by simply pressing the SHIFT key and the REPEAT DIALLING key.

Exception: If preselected dialling has been programmed (see page 63) and you press the

SHIFT key and the REPEAT DIALLING key before pressing the CONNECT key, the

preselected number is dialled.

Calls on external lines (i.e. class of service) are controlled by access permissions determining

how ”far“ you are allowed to call on your particular phone. The basic access permission for

each telephone is conﬁgured by the service engineer (e.g. foreign calls, local calls). A list of

permission stages is given on page 45.

To protect your telephone from unauthorized use you can switch the permission down to

“restricted access/semi-restricted access” (see page 45).

Please note that you can switch your handset over to tone dialling (DTMF), for example to call

up calls recorded on an answering machine or a voice mailbox. There are two facilities

available for this function: temporary switching over during a call (see page 26) or automatic

switching over (see page 66).
