Dome Control Methods
AN035
This Application Note provides recommended design practices when implementing Pan, Tilt,
Zoom dome control using the Intellex (software versions 2.3 and higher) Digital Video
Management System. Three configurations are listed below and additional details are provided as
the document progresses.
1. Dome control via ADTT16E and Network Client™ (Software versions 2.3 and higher)
2. Direct Sensormatic RS-422 dome control using serial port or USB connector on the rear
of the Intellex box. (Software versions 2.3 and higher)
3. Intellex-to-Matrix Switcher based Dome Pan, Tilt, Zoom control. (Software versions 3.0
and higher)
Each of the configurations below illustrates the interconnection between system components
including wiring details, software configuration settings/options, and required accessories for
proper installation.
Dome Control via ADTT16E
The ADTT16E SensorNet Dome Controller may be connected to the Intellex RS-232 port, as
shown below, via its’ EIM (Electronic Interconnect Module). Dome control commands are
transmitted from the Network Client software GUI to the Intellex and processed by the Intellex for
transmission to the EIM via its RS-232 port.

INSTALLATION AND MINIMUM HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
The remote dome control software is compatible with Intellex DV8000 and DV16000 series
running v2.3 or higher. The software may be installed via a CD-ROM or diskettes. Once the
software and license key are installed, and version 2.3 upgrade is activated, the software
installation is complete at the Intellex.
The VM16 or ADTT16E Touch Tracker
is required at the Intellex site. Note: All dome targets
and patterns must be programmed locally via the VM16 or ADTT16E Touch Tracker.
The Network Client remote dome control software must be installed at the remote site. No
additional software license key is required for the Network Client v2.3 upgrade.
Note: If RS-422 is the preferred protocol, the RCSN422 is available as a SensorNet to RS-422
code translator (visit http://www.americandynamics.net/products_RCSN422.asp
for more
information).
American Dynamics domes are interconnected to the EIM module as illustrated above in Figure
1. If more than four domes need to be connected to any of the 4 nodes, the RJ6SN 6-Position J-
Box may be purchased to create a star configuration with additional domes. For further
information please contact our Applications Engineering Dept. at 1-800-507-6268 – option 2.
For proper dome control operation, the Intellex software settings within the SETUP – CAMERAS –
CAMERA CONTROL sub-menu should be set for VM16/ADTT16E as illustrated below in Figure
1a. Note: When using the ADTT16E SensorNet Controller, select Mux 16 under the "Config
Devices" menu. (See Intellex Installation and Operating Instructions manual at
(http://www.americandynamics.net/products_intellex.asp
for more detailed information).

Direct RS-422 Dome Control
Direct Sensormatic RS-422 control may be achieved by connecting the dome to an available
USB connector on the rear of the Intellex unit via a USB-to-RS-232 dongle and RS-232-to-
RS-422 converter device. The telemetry is unidirectional simplex RS-422.
Note
: A single USB-to-RS-232 dongle is supplied with the purchase of the Premier Package of
Intellex. If a Standard or Deluxe package is ordered, the dongle may be ordered separately –
Model Number RDVUSB23201. The RS-232-to-RS-422 converter can be purchased through
B&B Electronics – Part#: 422LP9TB.

For proper dome control operation the Intellex software settings within the SETUP – CAMERAS –
CAMERA CONTROL sub-menu should be set for RS-422 Dome as illustrated in Figure 2a. Our
RJ860AP 10-Position RS-422 J-Box and RJ856UD Single Position RS-422 J-Box may be used to
repeat the data signal, extend the cabling distance, or implement a home run design. The
illustration below in Figure 2 shows the interconnection details between the dome and the
Intellex.

The illustration above depicts a serial connection to one of the Com ports on the MegaPower™
48. Note: All current American Dynamics matrix switchers are compatible with Intellex running
software v3.0 and higher. The connection is made using the two cabling assemblies as shown in
Figure 3. The USB-to-RS-232 dongle, as described in the previous section, is mated with the
DB9-to-RJ45 cable assembly.

Note: The DB9-to-RJ45 cable assembly may be ordered as Part#: 0351-1315-01. It is
recommended that the RS-232 port on the Matrix Switcher be set for Terminal mode in the event
that keyboard pass code security has been programmed.
The Intellex dome control settings may be configured within the following submenu: SETUP –
CAMERAS – CAMERA CONTROL as illustrated in Figure 3a. The recommended software settings
are shown in Table A.
