About this guide
This guide provides site preparation recommendations, step-by-step procedures for rack mounting and desk mounting, inserting optional
modules, and connecting to a power source.
CAUTION: To avoid electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage, wear grounding wrist straps when handling this equipment.
WARNING: Only trained and qualied personnel can install this equipment. Read this guide before you install and power up this
equipment. This equipment contains two power cords. Disconnect both power cords before servicing.

Introduction
The Z9100-ON is a one rack unit compact 10/25/40/50/100 GbE switch. The switch includes 32 xed quad form-factor pluggable 28
(QSFP28) optics for 40/100 GbE aggregation and 10/25/40/50 GbE top-of-rack (ToR) and end-of-row (EoR) applications. The Z9100–
ON switch includes two hot-swap AC or DC power supply units (PSUs) and ve hot-swap fan units.

(ONIE) LED behaviors. Some LED behaviors may change after you install your software.

You can order the Z9100–ON switch in several congurations.
You can order the following supported hardware components:
Z9100–ON AC or DC normal airow: thirty–two 10/25/40/50/100 GbE ports with two SFP+ 10 GbE ports, two AC or DC power
supply and ve fan subsystems. Airow is from the I/O side to the power supply side.
Z9100–ON AC or DC reverse airow: thirty–two 10/25/40/50/100 GbE ports with two SFP+ 10 GbE ports, two AC or DC power
supply and ve fan subsystems. Airow from the power supply side to the I/O side.

Switch status
You can view Z9100–ON status information using the light emitting diodes (LEDs).
Luggage tag
The Z9100–ON switch has a pull-out tag, known as a luggage tag, on the I/O-side of the switch. The luggage tag includes switch ID
information.

Site preparations
The Z9100–ON is suitable for installation as part of a common bond network (CBN).
You can install the switch in:

Site selection
Install Dell EMC equipment in restricted access areas.
A restricted access area is one in which service personnel can only gain access using a special tool, lock, key or other means of security.
The authority responsible for the location must control the site access.
Ensure that the area where you install your Z9100–ON switch meets the following safety requirements:
Near an adequate power source. Connect the switch to the appropriate branch circuit protection as dened by your local electrical
codes.
Environmental—switch location—temperature range is from 32° to 113°F (from 0° to 45°C).
Ambient—switch operating—temperature range is from 10° to 35°C (from 50° to 95°F).
Relative humidity is from 5 to 85 percent noncondensing.
In a dry, clean, well-ventilated, and temperature-controlled room, away from heat sources such as hot air vents or direct sunlight.
Away from sources of severe electromagnetic noise.
Positioned in a rack or cabinet, or on a desktop with adequate space in the front, back, and sides for proper ventilation and access.
Install the switch in information technology rooms in accordance with Article 645 of the National Electrical Code and NFPA 75.
Cabinet placement
Install the Z9100–ON only in indoor cabinets designed for use in a controlled environment.
Do not install the Z9100–ON in outside cabinets. For cabinet placement requirements, see Site Selection.

12 Site preparations
The cabinet must meet minimum size requirements. Airow must be in accordance with the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) standard.
Ensure that there is a minimum of 5 inches (12.7 cm) between the intake and exhaust vents and the cabinet wall.
Rack mounting
When you prepare your equipment rack, ensure that the rack is grounded.
Ground the equipment rack to the same ground point the power service in your area uses. The ground path must be permanent.
Z9100–ON ground
Dell EMC recommends you ground the Z9100-ON switch. Use your switch in a common bond network (CBN).
Connect the grounding cables as described in Z9100-ON Installation.
Fans and airow
The Z9100–ON fans support two airow options: normal and reverse. Normal airow is from the I/O side to the PSU side. Reverse airow
from the PSU side to the I/O side.
Fan combinations
Installation of the fans is done as part of the factory install based on SKU type. The Z9100-ON has stock keeping units (SKUs) that support
the following congurations:
AC or DC PSU with fan airow from the I/O to the PSU—normal airow
AC or DC PSU with fan airow from the PSU to the I/O—reverse airow
Be sure to order the fans suitable to support your site’s ventilation. Use a single type of airow fan in your switch. Do not mix reverse and
normal airows in a single Z9100–ON switch.
For proper ventilation, position the Z9100-ON in an equipment rack or cabinet with a minimum of 5 inches (12.7 cm) of clearance around
the exhaust vents.
Power
To connect the switch to the applicable power source, use the appropriate power cable. A power cable is included with the switch.
When installing AC or DC switches, follow the requirements of the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70, where applicable.
The switch powers-up when you connect the power cable between the switch and the power source.
CAUTION
: Always disconnect the power cable before you service the power supply slots.
CAUTION: On an AC switch, use the power supply cable as the main disconnect device. Ensure that the socket-outlet is located
and installed near the equipment and is easily accessible.
NOTE: Module power is software controlled. You do not see module LEDs when the switch powers up in ONIE.
Storing components
If you do not install your Z9100–ON and components immediately, Dell EMC recommends properly storing the switch and all optional
components by following these guidelines:
Storage location temperature must remain constant. The storage range is from -40°C to 70°C (-40° to 158°F).
Site preparations

Store on a dry surface or oor, away from direct sunlight, heat, and air conditioning ducts.
Store in a dust-free environment.
NOTE: ESD damage can occur when components are mishandled. Always wear an ESD-preventive wrist or heel ground strap
when handling the Z9100–ON and its accessories. After you remove the original packaging, place the Z9100–ON and its
components on an antistatic surface.

NEBS compliance
For your switch to be network equipment building system (NEBS) compliant, you must follow the instructions detailed in this section.
To be NEBS compliant, orient your switch in the rack so that the air inlet is from the front aisle and the air exhaust is to the back aisle.

NEBS-compliant ground installation
Important information
WARNING: The SFP+, QSFP, QSFP28, console, Ethernet management, and universal serial bus (USB) ports are suitable for
connection to intrabuilding or unexposed wiring or cabling only. You MUST NOT metallically connect the ports to interfaces that
connect to the out side plant (OSP) or its wiring. Use these interfaces as intrabuilding interfaces only (Type-2 or Type-4 ports as
described in GR-1089-CORE, Issue 6) and they require isolation from the exposed OSP cabling. Adding primary protectors is not
sucient protection to connect these interfaces metallically to OSP wiring.
WARNING: If you install and connect the Z9100-ON switch to a commercial AC power source, you must connect the switch to
an external special protection device (SPD).
To be NEBs compliant:
Locate your switch in a restricted-access area were only trained personnel are allowed access.
Install and connect your switch to the common bonding network (CBN).
You can also install and connect your switch to the central oce.
Connect the battery returns of your switch as DC-I.
Ground your switch using a copper ground conductor.
Clean and coat all bare grounding connection points on your switch with an anti-oxidant solution before making connections.
Bring all unplated surfaces on your switch to a bright nish and treat them with an anti-oxidant solution before making connections.
To ensure electrical continuity, remove any nonconductive surfaces on your switch from the threads and connection points.
Use the two-hole, Listed, compression-type lug with an AWG 14 gauge wire for switch grounding.
NOTE
: The Z9100-ON can operate at -40.5 VDC to -60 VDC at a maximum current level of 15A.
NOTE: The Z9100-ON is Earthquake Z4-compliant when you attach the ReadyRails to the four-post frame using threaded
hardware. Do not use the tool-less or two-post installation methods.
NEBS-compliant ground installation
Before you install the switch into a rack, install the ground (GND) lug assembly.
Your switch includes two installed M3 screws on the lower-left side of your switch. Your switch also includes an assembled UL-certied
GND lug with bracket, packaged separately. If any parts are missing, contact your Dell EMC sales representative.

1 Remove the two installed M3 screws from the lower-left side of your switch.
NOTE: Keep these screws.
2 Remove the bracket assembly from the shipping bag.
3 Clean the bracket and lug surfaces thoroughly, and apply an anti-oxidant solution to the mating surfaces.
4 Attach the switch ground using the Ground cable instructions.
5 Using the two removed screws, attach the GND lug bracket assembly to your switch, as shown.
Torque the M3 screws to ±4–5 in-lbs.

To install the Z9100–ON switch, complete the installation procedures in the order described.
Always handle the Z9100–ON and its components with care. Avoid dropping the switch or its eld replaceable units (FRUs).
NOTE: ESD damage can occur if components are mishandled. Always wear an ESD-preventive wrist or heel ground strap when
handling the Z9100–ON and its components. As with all electrical devices of this type, take all the necessary safety precautions
to prevent injury when installing this switch.

Ground cable
NOTE
: For AC-powered switches, although the third conductor of the AC power cord provides a ground path, Dell EMC
recommends grounding your switch with a dedicated ground wire.
NOTE: For DC-powered switches, the only way to safely ground your switch is to attach a dedicated ground wire.

18 Z9100–ON installation
Depending on the type of switch, to attach a ground cable to the switch, you need one of the included M3 or M4 screws. The switch ships
with one of the following two congurations:
One threaded hole using an included M3 screw.
Two threaded holes using one of the two included M4 screws.
In both congurations, the ground cable is not included. To properly ground the switch, Dell EMC recommends a one- or two-hole lug, M3
or M4 hole size. The switch hole lugs must be a UL-recognized, crimp-type lug.
CAUTION: Grounding conductors
must
be made of copper. Do not use aluminum conductors.
NOTE: Coat the one-hole lug with an anti-oxidant compound before crimping. Also, bring any unplated mating surfaces to a
bright nish and coat with an anti-oxidant before mating. Plated mating surfaces must be clean and free from contamination.
NOTE: The rack installation ears are not suitable for grounding.
To connect the ground cable to the switch, follow these steps:
1 Remove the ground cable from the shipping bag and cut it to the desired length. The cable length must facilitate proper operation of
the fault interrupt circuits. Use the shortest cable route allowable.
2 Use one of the following to attach the ground cable:
Using one threaded M3 hole, attached the ground cable to the lug using an M3 screw with a captive internal tooth lock washer, as
shown. Torque the screw to ±4–5 in-lbs.
Using one of the two M4 threaded holes, attach the ground cable to the lug. Use an M4 screw with a captive internal tooth lock
washer, as shown. Torque the screw to ±5–6 in-lbs.
3 Attach the other end of the ground cable to a suitable ground point such as the rack or cabinet.
The rack installation ears are not a suitable grounding point.
Rack or cabinet installation
You may either place the switch on a rack shelf or mount the switch directly into a 19" wide, EIA-310- E-compliant rack. Compliant racks
include four-post, two-post, or threaded. The ReadyRails system is provided for 1U front-rack and two-post installations.
The ReadyRails system includes separately packaged rail assemblies.
CAUTION
: Your switch is not NEBS Earthquake Z4-compliant if you use the 1U tool-less square-hole or two-post installation
methods.
WARNING: This guide is a condensed reference. Read the safety instructions in your Safety, Environmental, and Regulatory
information booklet before you begin.
NOTE: The illustrations in this document are not intended to represent a specic switch.
NOTE: Do not the use the mounted ReadyRails as a shelf or a workplace.
Rack mount safety considerations
Rack loading—Overloading or uneven loading of racks may result in shelf or rack failure and can damage the equipment and possible
personal injury. Stabilize racks in a permanent location before loading begins. Mount the components starting at the bottom of the rack,
then work to the top. Do not exceed your rack’s load rating.
Power considerations—Connect only to the power source specied on the unit. When multiple electrical components are installed in a
rack, ensure that the total component power ratings do not exceed the circuit capabilities. Overloaded power sources and extension
cables present re and shock hazards.
Elevated ambient temperature—If installed in a closed rack assembly, the operating temperature of the rack environment may be
greater than the room ambient temperature. Use care not to exceed the 45°C (113°F) maximum ambient temperature of the switch.
Reduced airow—Do not compromise the amount of airow required for safe operation of the equipment. Install the equipment in the
rack so that the equipment constantly has the correct amount of airow surrounding it.

Reliable earthing—Maintain reliable earthing of rack-mounted equipment. Pay particular attention to the supply connections other than
the direct connections to the branch circuit, for example: use of power strips.
Do not mount the equipment with the back panel facing downward.
ReadyRails installation
The ReadyRails rack mounting system is provided to easily congure your rack for installation of your Z9100–ON switch.
You can install the ReadyRails system using the 1U tool-less method or one of three possible 1U tooled methods. The tooled installation

CAUTION: Do not use this method if you need your switch to be NEBS Earthquake Z4-compliant.
1 Face the ReadyRails ange ears facing outward. Place one rail between the left and right vertical posts. Align and seat the back ange
rail pegs in the back vertical post ange.
The center extraction shows the pegs in both the square and nonthreaded round holes.

2 Align and seat the front ange pegs in the holes on the front side of the vertical post.
3 Repeat this procedure for the second rail.
To remove each rail, pull on the latch release button on each ange ear and unseat each rail.
Two-post ush-mount conguration
CAUTION
: Your switch is not NEBS Earthquake Z4-compliant if you use this installation method.
1 Remove the latch castings from the front side of each ReadyRails assembly, item 1.
To remove the two screws from each front ange ear on the switch side of the rail and remove each latch casting, use a torx
screwdriver. Retain the latch castings for future rack requirements. It is not necessary to remove the back ange castings.
