into the printer and the stand.
Make sure to unpack this product with
four persons or more.
While taking out the printer from the box,
make sure to remove the vinyl sheet.

Assembling3.
This section explains how to assemble the
printer.
Four or more people are required to
assemble this printer.
Procedure for assembling 3.1
the stand
Follow the procedure below to assemble the
stand.
Follow the procedure below to assemble 1.
the right stand.
Attach the right leg part to the right base a.
part so that four screw holes in the base
part are at the front.
Tighten two hexagon socket head cap b.
screws using a hexagonal wrench.
Assemble the left stand in the same way as 2.

Fasten the connector bar to the right stand 3.
using two hexagon socket head cap screws.
Attach the connector bar with the groove
facing the rear as shown below.
Fasten the connector bar to the left stand 4.

Insert the two transfer stays into the right 2.
and left transfer brackets, lift the printer
with four or more people and place it on
the stand.
Remove the two transfer stays and fasten 3.
the printer to the stand using eight
buttery screws.
Follow the procedure below to attach the 4.
waste uid tank.
Place the waste uid tank in the waste uid a.
tank holder.
Attach the waste uid tube to the tank.b.
Insert the waste uid sensor cable into the c.
connector on the bottom of the printer.

shown below.
Detach all protective materials in accordance
with the following steps.
Remove all tapes from each cover.1.
Open the left maintenance cover, then 2.
place the tray.
Open the front cover, then remove a screw 3.
from the head unit fastening material
(metal plate) and remove the material.
Peel off the tape, be careful not to come 4.
in contact with T fence, and remove the
Bearer collapse prevention material and
Bearer x.
Make sure not to damage T fence
during o p era t i o n . If T fe n ce is
damaged, it will aect print results.

Procedures and environment for installing this
product are explained.
Installation environment4.1
Install this product to the appropriate place
with reference to the following.
Do not install the printer in the following
places where there is a possibility that
the printer may be damaged or might
fall or be fallen by chance.
On a sha
ky stand
Slanting location
Places where vibration of other
machines etc. is transmitted.
Do not stamp on the printer or do
not place heavy things on top of
it. The printer may be damaged or
might fall or be fallen by chance.
Do not cover the printer with blanket
and cloth like tablecloth not to close
the vent. If the vent is closed, the
printer could accumulate heat inside
and may cause re.
Do not install the printer in a location
that has high humidity or is dusty. It
could lead to electric shock and re.
Environmental condition4.1.1
Select an installation location in accordance
with the table below.
For temperature and humidity, avoid locations
such as the following. There is a possibility that
the print quality will be affected.
Places where temperature or humidity may
rapidly change, even though within the
required conditions.
Places that receive direct sunlight, increased
illumination or direct air, for example from
an air conditioner.
To keep the temperature and humidity constant,
install this product in a location where the air
condition is adjustable.

Install on a level oor which meets the following
condition.
It has enough strength to support the weight of
the printer and the stand.
For the weight of the printer and the stand,
refer to the Operation Manual.
Installation procedure4.2
Install this product to the installation place in
accordance with the list shown below.
Please check that the butterfly bolts are not loose
before/after carrying this product.When transferring
or carrying outside, separate the printer and the
stand.
Check that the eight butter fl y bolts 1.
attaching the stand and the printer are not
loose.
Carry the printer to the installation place.2.
Turn the following adjusters in the direction 3.
as shown below to prevent the printer from
moving.

Be sure to use the specified power
cable (separately sold).Using power
cables other than the specified can
cause an electric shock or re.

Turning the power ON/6.
OFF
This section explains how to turn ON/OFF the
printer.
Turning the power ON6.1
Follow the procedure below to turn ON the
printer.
Press the [Power] key on the operation 1.
panel to turn ON the printer.
The Power lamp on the operation panel lights
up in blue.
The printer starts initial operation.
When the initial operation is complete, the
printer enters normal status.
Turning the power OFF6.2
Follow the procedure below to turn OFF the
printer.
Regarding the operating condition of the 1.
printer, conrm the following.
Printing or other operations are not in
progress.
The operation panel is in normal status.
The Low lamp on the operation panel lights
up in green. (VJ-1638/1638W)
The High lamp on the operation panel is
turned o. (
VJ-1638/1638W)
Press the [Power] key on the operation 2.
panel to turn OFF the printer.
The Power lamp on the operation panel turns
OFF.
If the operation panel is in the following
status, the power is ON.
The [Power] key is pressed in.
The Power lamp lights up in Blue.
Press the key once again and turn OFF
the power.
The printer starts operating to turn the power
OFF.
The operation panel displays "Power O".
If the head height is set to High or Mid,
"Change Head Gap Low" is displayed on the
operation panel. (VJ-1638/1638W) Set the
head height to Low.
All the lamps on the operation panel and the
LCDmonitor are turned OFF.
The printer automatically turns the power
OFF.
Product activation 7.
This printer requires activation when the power
is turned ON for the rst time.
When "Activation required" is displayed on the
Operation panel, refer to "Product Activation
Guide" (separate volume) to perform activation.

Setting the display 8.
language and unit
Once activation has been completed, the printer
requires setting of the language, temperature unit,
and length unit at the time of restart.
Follow the procedure below to setup.
Once activation has been completed, 1.
"Reboot a printer" is displayed on the
Operation panel. Press the [Power] key on
the Operation panel and turn the power
OFF.
Press the [Power] key on the Operation 2.
panel and turn the power ON.
"Language: English" is displayed on the
Operation panel.
Press [+] or [-] key on the Operation panel 3.
to select the set value, and press the [Enter]
key.
To set the language to Japanese, select
"Language: Japanese".
"Temp: Celsius[ C]" is displayed on the
Operation panel.
Press [+] or [-] key on the Operation panel 4.
to select the set value, and press the [Enter]
key.
If you want to display the temperature in
Fahrenheit, select "Temp: Fahrenheit [°F]".
"Length: mm" is displayed on the Operation
panel.
Press [+] or [-] key on the Operation panel 5.
to select the set value, and press the [Enter]
key.
If you want to display the temperature in
inch, select "Length: inch".
This completes the setting the display
language and units.
The printer starts initial operation.
When the initial operation is complete, the
printer enters normal status.

Th i s sec tion ex p l a i n s how t o install in k
cartridges.
Follow the steps below to install ink cartridges.
The procedures differ between VJ-2638/VJ-
1638 and VJ-1638W. Check your printer model
name and follow the correct procedure.

Turn the printer ON.1.
The printer starts the initializing operation.
After the initial operation is compete,
"Start Ink Charge ? > E" is displayed on the
operation panel.
Press the [Enter] key on the operation 2.
panel.
"Insert Cleaning cart." is displayed on the
operation panel.
Take out the cleaning cartridge(8pcs) from 3.
the bag.
Set the cleaning cartridge to the ink 4.
cartridge slot.
Keep the arrow of Cleaning cartridge facing
up and insert it into the printer toward the
front side.

the end of the ink cartridge slot.
If the head height is set to High, "Change
Head Gap Low" is displayed on Operation
panel. Set the head height to Low.

When all cleaning cartridges are installed,
"Busy-Washing" is displayed on the operation
panel, and the printer starts charging the
cleaning uid.
When the cleaning fluid has been charged,
"Remove Cartridges" is displayed on the
operation panel.
Remove all the cleaning cartridges.5.
"Busy-Washing" is displayed on the operation
pan el and the printer starts head cleaning.
When head cleaning is complete, "Wash retry?
No" is displayed on the operation panel.
Press the [Enter] key on the operation 6.
panel.
"Insert InkCartridges" is displayed on the
operation panel.
Install Ink cartridges (K, C, M, Y: 2 each) in 7.
Ink cartridge slots (K, C, M, Y: 2 each) on the
back of the printer.
Shake Ink cartridge two to three times gently
before inserting it into Ink cartridge slot.
Slots for ink cartridges are specied depending
on colors of the ink cartridges. Match the ink
color label with the ink color before inserting Ink
cartridge.
Keep the arrow of Ink cartridge facing up and
insert it into the printer.
Insert the ink cartridge all the way to the end
of the ink cartridge slot.
When all the ink cartridges are installed, "Ink
Refill **%" is displayed on the operation panel
and ink replenishment starts.
Initial lling takes time as follows.
VJ-2638: about 20 minutes
VJ-1638: about 17 minutes.
Ink lling operation and pause operation are
repeated during the ink replenishment.
W h e n " 1 0 0 % " i s d i s p l a y e d , t h e i n k
replenishment is complete.
After the ink replenishment is complete,
"Media End" is displayed on the operation
panel.
D o n o t pe r f o r m th e f o l lo w i n g
operations during ink lling. If lling
is interrupted,ink will be lost when
lling is resumed.
Do not turn OFF the power of the
printer.
Do not unplug the power cable of
the printer.
Do not open the front cover.
Do not open the maintenance cover.
Do not raise the media loading
lever.
If the printer performs the nozzle check
print i n g immedi a te l y af ter in i t ial ink
replenishment is complete, the following
results may occur.
Printed lines become blurred.
The data is partially not printed.
In such cases, follow "6.2.3 Head
cleaning" and rell a small amount of
ink. Then, check the printing result.
If there is no improvement in the print result
even after refill a small amount of ink, leave
the printer unused for an hour or more. Then,
refill a small amount of ink again and check
the print result.
If there is still no improvement, contact
your local MUTOH dealer.
 
For VJ-1638W9.1.2
Turn the printer ON.1.
The printer starts the initializing operation.

Select whether to perform cleaning of the 3.
ink path before the initial ink charge.
Cleaning may be required depending on the
ink type to be set.
To perform head cleaning, make sure to use
the cleaning liquid that matches the ink.
When cleaning is required, press the [+] a.
key or [-] key to select "Yes".
When cleaning is not required, proceed to b.
the step 8.
Press the [Enter] key on the operation 4.

440ml Ink cartridges are not compatible with
VJ-1638W.
Rotate Ink cartridge slots 90 degrees 1.

After the initial operation is complete, "Start
Ink Charge - > E" is displayed on the operation
panel.
Press the [Enter] key on the operation 3.

When all the ink cartridges are installed, "Ink
Rell **%" is displayed on the operation panel
and ink replenishment starts.
Initial lling takes time as follows.
VJ-2638: about 20 minutes
VJ-1638: about 17 minutes.
Ink filling operation and pause operation
are repeated during the ink replenishment.
W h e n " 1 0 0 % " i s d i s p l a y e d , t h e i n k
replenishment is complete.
After the ink replenishment is complete,
"Media End" is displayed on the operation
panel.
D o n o t pe r f o r m th e f o l lo w i n g
operations during ink lling. If lling
is interrupted,ink will be lost when
lling is resumed.
Do not turn OFF the power of the
printer.
Do not unplug the power cable of
the printer.
Do not open the front cover.
Do not open the maintenance cover.
Do not raise the media loading
lever.
If the printer performs the nozzle check
print i n g immedi a te l y af ter in i t ial ink
replenishment is complete, the following
results may occur.
Printed lines become blurred.
The data is partially not printed.
In such cases, follow "6.2.3 Head
cleanin
g" and rell a small amount of
ink. Then, check the printing result.
If there is no improvement in the print result
even after refill a small amount of ink, leave
the printer unused for an hour or more. Then,
refill a small amount of ink again and check
the print result.
If there is still no improvement, contact
your local MUTOH dealer.
Installing high capacity 9.3
pack adapters (option, VJ-
2638/1638)
Use the optional high capacity pack adapters to
use the 1000ml ink packs on VJ-2638/1638.
Follow the procedure below to install the high
capacity pack adapters.
Turn the printer ON.1.
The printer starts the initializing operation.
After the initial operation is compete,
"Start Ink Charge -- > E" is displayed on the
operation panel.
Press the [Enter] key on the operation panel.2.
"Insert Cleaning cart." is displayed on the
operation panel.
Take out the cleaning uid packs (8 pieces)3.
and smart chip cards(8pieces)from the bag.
Install the cleaning fluid pack and smart 4.
ch ip card to the high capac ity pack
adapters.
To install or remove the cleaning fluid pack
and smart chip card to/from the high capacity
pack adapter, refer to the operation manual
included with high capacity pack adapter.
Insert the high capacity pack adapters into 5.
the ink cartridge slot.
Make sure that the cleaning fluid pack and
smart chip are installed on the high capacity
pack adapter before inserting it to the slot. If
the high capacity pack adapters are inserted
into the slot without the cleaning fluid pack,
the remaining information will be rewritten
and the cleaning fluid pack will not be usable.
Insert the high capacity pack adapter all the
way to the end of the slot.
When all high capacity pack adapters are
installed, "Busy-Washing" is displayed on
the operation panel, and the printer starts
charging the cleaning uid.
When the cleaning fluid has been charged,
"Remove Cartridges" is displayed on the
operation panel.

Attach the right roll media holder to the 4.

press Roll media holder, Fixing lever may not
be completely locked because of the weight
of the roll media.

does not go beyond the media loading mark.
It may affect print quality.

is appropriately pressed by Pressurizing
rollers.
When the media is set as shown in the
following gure X, follow the procedure on a
and b below to adjust the position of the roll
media. If the media looked like in the gure X,
media may slant or wrinkle may be occured
when printing.

to remove blurred or missing parts in the
check pattern, perform powerful cleaning.
If those problems above were not improved
after a few times of head cleaning, refer to the
following, and perform required procedures.
