INTRODUCTION
Thank you for purchasing the TOPCON BG-5 Background Illumination.
This instrument is combined with the slit lamp and is used as an auxiliary illumination.
This instrument has the following features.
Used for background illumination.
The light level is changed according to the illumination level of the slit lamp.
The following functions is provided.
- The light level for visible observation is changed by three steps (full-open, half-open,
OFF).
- The illumination is changed to the infrared light.
This manual outlines the BG-5 Background Illumination, including operating procedures and
troubleshooting.
Always keep this Instruction Manual at hand.
This instrument is an accessory of the commercial product, Slit Lamp SL-D701.

Basic caution
The components of this instrument must be fitted securely.
Disposal
Dispose of the instrument according to local disposal and recycling laws.

Humidity : 30% to 90% (non-condensing)

STORAGE, USAGE PERIOD
1. Storage (without wrapping (without package))

Humidity : 10% to 95% (without dew condensation)
Air pressure : 700hPa to 1060hPa
* THIS INSTRUMENT DOES NOT MEET THE TEMPERATURE REQUIREMENTS OF ISO 15004-
1 FOR STORAGE. DO NOT STORE THIS INSTRUMENT IN CONDITIONS WHERE THE TEM-
PERATURE MAY RISE ABOVE 40°C OR FALL BELOW 10°C.
2. When storing the instrument, ensure that the following conditions are met:
(1) The instrument must not be splashed with water.
(2) Do not store the instrument in an environment where air pressure, temperature, humidity, venti-
lation, sunlight, dust, salty/sulfurous air, etc. could cause damage.
(3) Do not store or transport the instrument on a slanted or uneven surface or in an area where it is
subject to vibrations or instability.
(4) Do not store the instrument where chemicals are stored or gas is generated.
3. Normal life span of the instrument:
8 years from delivery providing regular maintenance is performed (according to the self-certification
[TOPCON data])

MOUNTING THE BACKGROUND ILLUMINATION
1 Make sure that the power switch of the slit lamp is OFF.
2 Connect the power connector of BG-5 to the plug of the slit lamp's illumination unit.
3 Insert the two pins of BG-5 into the guide hole of the slit lamp until they stop.
NOTES
Be careful not to stain the lens with fingerprint or dust. The opti-
cal performance may be damaged.
• For the component names of slit lamp, refer to the instruction
manual of your slit lamp.

OPERATIONS PROCEDURE
1 Turn on the power switch of the slit lamp.
2 To adjust the illumination light of the slit lamp and the background illumination light at the same
time, use "Brightness selector knob" on the slit lamp.
3 To adjust only the background illumination light, adjustment can be made by three steps (OFF,
full-open, half-open) by "Lever".
4 To change to the infrared light, set "Lever" at the position shown below.
TROUBLESHOOTING
If there is a problem, contact your dealer or TOPCON (see the back cover).
NOTES
To avoid troubles in the instrument, do not pull the power cable
forcedly.
NOTES
To avoid photographing the reflection of infrared LED of BG-5, turn
off the BG-5 when photographing using digital camra unit DC-4
(optional accessory) with a visible light source.

PURPOSE OF USE
This instrument is combined with the slit lamp and is used as an auxiliary illumination. It is also used
as the illumination for infrared observation of eyeball and its appendages.
OPERATION PRINCIPLE
This instrument is an auxiliary illumination whose light source is LED.
MAINTENANCE
REGULAR MAINTENANCE
Before starting operation, check the following points.
The pins must be securely fitted into the guide hole of the slit lamp.
The illumination light level can be changed by operating the lever. The illumination can be changed
to the infrared illumination light.
The lever can be moved securely.
